LIBRARY SERVICES FOR FACULTY MISSION The Betty Sue Jessup
Library offers dynamic, point-of-need services from information
experts and quality collections that equip students with the
knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to be successful
lifelong learners. The library’s mission is achieved through:
• Teaching and promoting information literacy and critical
thinking • Partnerships with faculty to provide instructional
support services
for students • Quality resources that align with the college’s
curriculum • Resources comparable to collections available at
four-year institutions
VISION The Betty Sue Jessup Library seeks to be recognized as an
integral part of student success and as an instructional partner
with faculty.
VALUES Information literacy and critical thinking prepare
students to succeed both academically and professionally, and are
the foundations for all learning.
SERVICES OFFERED Instruction Embedded Librarian Program: An
embedded librarian acts as an information literacy instructor in
your class, relieving you of the burden of teaching research skills
and reviewing citations. Interactions usually occur through a
discussion forum in Blackboard where students can access a
librarian during each phase of their assignment. Having an embedded
librarian ensures that students get help when they need it and when
they are most receptive to it. Librarians can:
• Help students develop a thesis • Help students pick a topic if
they don’t know what they would like to
write about • Help them locate library materials (and Web
sources if those are allowed) • Vet their sources • Check their
in-text and parenthetical citations • Check their References/Works
Cited page to make sure they have
correctly formatted their citations • Post documents or
announcements to the Blackboard site
(with instructor permission)
ABOUT The Betty Sue Jessup Library was originally dedicated in
1991 in honor of Betty Sue Jessup, a local business leader and
philanthropist, through an endowment from the James L. Jessup, Sr.
family and the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Central Virginia. The
Jessup family funded additional upgrades and renovations again in
2007, at which time the library was re-dedicated in Ms. Jessup’s
honor. Today, the Betty Sue Jessup Library continues to expand,
evolve, and meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff.

Copyright Fair Use: Although the Jessup Library cannot provide
legal advice, staff will assist you with understanding copyright
and fair use and provide you with materials to make a fair use
justification.
Open Educational Resources (OERs): If you wish to include OERs
in your courses, visit the Open Educational Resources Playbook at
http://libguides.pvcc.edu/oers for links to collections and
information on licensing and attribution. Library Services
Coordinator Crystal Newell offers professional development and
one-on-one assistance with OERs. Please contact her at
[email protected] with any questions.
Reference Research Assistance: The Jessup Library extends the
same research assistance to faculty that it does to students. If
you are working on a committee and need assistance with a
literature review, or if you are working to have something
published, library staff is available to help.
Customized Playbooks: The Jessup Playbooks, available at
http://libguides.pvcc.edu, offer targeted, customized support to
students and faculty. Playbooks can be tailored to a course, or
preferably, to an assignment. These playbooks serve as step-by-step
guides to students as they work through reading, interpreting, and
completing an assignment. Contact the Jessup Library to find out
how these guides can help your students succeed.
Personal Librarian: Students often need consistent support
throughout a semester as they progress from introductory material
to mastery. With a personal librarian, students in developmental,
capstone, or “killer” courses work with a librarian throughout the
semester on all aspects of information literacy and research.
Contact Laura Skinner at [email protected] for more
information.
Circulation Reserves: You may place books, folders, study
guides, and videos on reserve for your classes. Reserve items are
kept at the circulation desk and may be checked out for use in the
library. Contact Jacqueline Carrell for additional information at
[email protected].
Collections: Bring your PVCC Employee ID to check out materials.
Most materials are checked out for 28 days with infinite renewals,
provided no one else requests the item. For more information, visit
the Library Policies page at
www.pvcc.edu/student-services/library/library-policies.
Interlibrary Loan: If the library does not provide access to an
item you need such as a book or article, then request it through
interlibrary loan, a free service. Submit your request online at
www.pvcc.edu/student-services/library/interlibrary-loan-request.
Ordering Purchase Requests: You are encouraged to recommend
purchases for both print and electronic resources in your subject
areas. Submit recommendations to your academic dean for
