1. Using the Library catalogueWhen searching, whether in the catalogue or in databases, remember that sustainable, sustainability, and environment are words commonly used in business in contexts that may have nothing to do with green issues.
Library Catalogue: Encore
Access the Library Catalogue from http://library.massey.ac.nz. The Library Catalogue’s Encore interface is very good for keyword searches and for guiding you to other useful search terms.
2. Reference ResourcesEncyclopedias are a good source of overview articles on a topic. The Business and Management subject guide on the Library web site lists relevant ones, several of which are online. The International Encyclopedia of Organization Studies is an online encyclopedia that has excellent overview articles on sustainability and business. To find it, look under Encyclopedias and Dictionaries on the Guide.
This publisher has other useful electronic reference sources that we subscribe to. Click onMore from SAGE Reference Online in the top left-hand corner.
Tags come from library subject headings. We can see that we can narrow our search with sustainable development, or environmental, climatic change, business ethics. We can also use the tags to get ideas for other search terms
Browsing works well for this topic. Look under Social Issues in the Reader’s Guide
SAGE Reference Online can also be accessed directly. Click on Search Article Databases from the Library Homepage, and look under S in the Alphabetical List of Databases.
3. Article DatabasesTo find journal articles on your topic click on the Article Databases heading at the bottom of the Library home page http://library.massey.ac.nz
3.1. Web of Science
This scholarly, multi-disciplinary database is a key starting point for any postgraduate research. Use phrase searching (with double quotation marks “ “) for more focused results.
Results are listed in reverse date order, but you can re-sort by relevance to get a more useful list of articles.
To see if Massey holds the article – click on the MasseyLink icon.Note: A search for articles on “corporate sustainability” also yields good results.
3.2. Business Source Premier
This is a comprehensive database for business topics, with articles ranging from the scholarly to those from newspapers and trade publications. The initial search results, using our two phrases, can be re-sorted by relevance (date is the default setting) and further limited to just scholarly journals.
Try a search for articles on “corporate sustainability” AND (leadership OR strategy) using the Abstract field and using the Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals limit.
You may like to view the Library’s 4-minute tutorial on Searching Business Source Premier.
This database covers scholarly literature from journals and more across a wide range of subject areas.
Use the same phrase searches as for Web of Science and Business Source Premier. From the Refine Results box – click on “more” in the Subject Area category. You can now narrow your results specifically to business, economics or social sciences articles, for example.
To see if the article is available – click on the MasseyLink icon.
3.4. General OneFile
Another multidisciplinary database with good general coverage of business topics from a wide range of publications. Try finding any of our three topic phrases in the abstract field.
Results are displayed in reverse date order and can be viewed in categories (e.g. magazines, academic journals).
3.5. Index New Zealand
For local information try one of the New Zealand databases, such as Index New Zealand.Note that you will need to enter your keywords and then select “as a phrase” if you wish to do a phrase search.
To see if Massey holds the articles you are interested in, go to the Classic Catalogue Journal search page and type (or paste in) the name of the journal.
4. Thesis LiteratureFrom the Library web site go to the Library for Postgraduates page and then click on the heading Finding Theses (bottom left).
The Library has access to online theses from around the world, which may prove useful information sources, with the added bonus of listing references for further reading.
5. Google Scholar
Start at the Library’s web site (http://library.massey.ac.nz) and select Article Databases. Choose Google Scholar from the Ten Most Used databases list (see top right hand corner of screen).
Why use this and not Google?Google Scholar is invaluable because it specifically searches working/discussion papers, government and organisation reports, published articles etc.
