IntroductionToassistourcustomersGraphisofthavedevelopedanewARCHICADadd-onthatsimplifiesandstreamlinescustomGDL-basedlibraryparts.ThecurrentreleaseislimitedtothescopeofatechnologypreviewthatwillhopefullybeasteppingstoneforfurtherimprovedARCHICADfeaturesinthisarea.TheLibraryPartMakeraimstoprovidearobustapproachwiththefocusondeliveringthe‘I’inBIMasstandardbasedonBS8541-1/2/3.Theadd-oncreatesadatadrivenapproachthatallowsdesignfreedomtoremaincentraltotheuser.ThisstronglycomplementsGraphisoft’sapproachtocreatingatoolfordesignersandiskeytogivingarchitectsthefreedomtocreateanything.ThetemplatewillalsoassistinimprovingIFCexchangebystandardisingthestoreddataorganisationinlibrarypartsfortheuserandseektomakeCOBie-UK-2012anin-builtstandardforallitsusers.ThisshouldassistallusersseekingtodeliverCOBietotheirclientsandmakedataexchangemorerobustandmorereliable.Theadd-onalsoseekstobecompatiblewithinternationalapproaches.HavingastandardapproachinlibrarypartsdevelopmentwillallowbettertrainingmaterialtobedevelopedandintimealsoallowUKandIrelandcompaniestoemploystaffwithoutneedingtoretrainwhereanemployeehasworkedforanotherUKorIrelandfirm.

BIMLibraryPartConceptTheconceptofBIMLibraryPartisbasedondelivering‘I’inBIMreliably.Thatmeansallpartsofthelibrarypartcontentsuchas2DSymbol,3DRepresentationandespeciallyInformationdatastructuremustbesynchronised.Inotherwordschanging2Dsymbolsand/or3Dmodelsshouldbereflectedinlibrarypartinformationdatastructuresandviceversa.AlthoughGDLTechnologysupportsthisapproachtheimplementationrequiresadvancedGDLprogrammingskillsthatcanrenderthemaintenanceandredistributionoverheadasunfeasible.LPMapproachfocusesontheindustry‘real-life’manufacturedproductswherethegeometryandinformationisfirmlytiedtogether(e.g.acertaintypeofproducthasalwaystheuniquebarcodenumber)howeverLPMstillallowsforparametric2D/3D(LOD-based)andparametricCAD(ARCHICADAttributes)2Dsymbolsand3Dmodels.AlsoLPMgreatlysimplifiescreationanddesignofcomplexopeningsinARCHICAD.

UseofAttributesLPMmapsusedAttributes(pens,fills,surfaces)of2Dsymbolsand3Dmodelsandoffersthemasparametersinthesavedlibrarypart.TheinitialnamesofparametersareautomaticallyderivedfromthenameoftheactualAttributehoweverparameternamesandvaluescanbemanuallycustomisedfromtheuserinterfacethatLPMadd-onprovidesbeforethelibrarypartgetssaved.Itisrecommendedtoconsolidateandcheckthetoolboxtoolsattributesettingsbeforeyoudrawormodellibrarypartdefinitionsinordertoavoidalargenumberofunwantedattributesasparametersinthelibrarypartuserinterface.SettingupyourtoolattributesettingsinFavouritespaletteisthebestwaytominimiseerrorsandavoidlaboriousprocessofcheckingthetoolattributesettingseverytime.
