Lesson 1 Library Orientation: The Library Catalogue
“A system for classifying books and other library materials by subject” (“Dewey Decimal System”, ODLIS).
Most school libraries have a separate section for fiction.
The number/letters found on the spine are called the call number, which determines where the material should be placed in the library.
Library Catalogue
Our online catalogue is called Destiny. It is a directory of all the resources the library has including online resources.
Library Catalogue
Each resource in the library has a record in the library catalogue. The record is made up of a lot of fields that contain information about the resource. A few of the fields include:Author, title, publication information (who, where, when), summary of what the book is about, subjects included, awards
When searching, you can choose to search specific fields or all the fields of a record.
Library Catalogue: searching

You can also narrow you search using limiters. If you are at home, you may want to limit your search to a certain material type such as ebooks.
