The Seward County League of Women Voters and Seward Memorial Library invite you to a special presentation where High will present findings from her “Money in Politics in Nebraska” investigation at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 3 in Seward Memorial Library. Kate High grew up in Albion, a small town northwest of Seward. She holds a B.A. from Doane University in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Education from Washington University in St. Louis. She worked for almost 30 years for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. After retirement she became active in the League of Women Voters and now serves as the State Treasurer. Kate High’s investigation in “Money in Politics in Nebraska,” a project for the League of Women Voters of Nebraska, began in 2017. She has written three reports which are available on the LWV-NE’s website. Following the presentation High will be available to answer questions. Seward Memorial Library is hosting a panel of local realtors along with Jonathan Jank, President and CEO of Seward County Chamber & Development, on Sunday, October 27 at 2 p.m. During the hour program they will field questions and share advice about buying, selling and renting property in Seward. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served. Light the Library The Seward Library Foundation invites you to join them in raising money to “Light the Library.” The library would like to be included in the downtown business district holiday silhouette. Every contribution, no matter the size, will be posted in the library. Mark your calendars now … we are hosting a “Light the Library Holiday Tea” to recognize donors on Sunday, December 15 at 2 p.m. More details regarding this afternoon celebration will be available soon. Your checks for this project should be made payable to the Seward Library Foundation. Help us make the library shine! The Friends of Seward Library kicked off this drive with a $3,000 donation. Focus on the League of Women VotersEach month the library highlights a local non-profit organization. Since the library is partnering with The League of Women Voters on November 3 we are providing a description of this group’s history and mission.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government through voter registration and education, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League was founded in 1920, immediately after the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that gave women the right to vote, and the first meeting of the Seward County League of Women Voters was held just one month later in September. While the League is nonpartisan, it encourages its members to be active in politics, individually or within the political party of their choice. Seward League activities include voter registration events, public forums on issues important locally and at the state and federal levels, and Candidates Night during election cycles. During 2020, the 100th anniversary of the League and the 19th Amendment, Seward will host the League of Women Voters of Nebraska Annual Meeting, be featured during the Seward 4th of July activities, and is planning events in celebration of its decades of success. Mid-Week Movies in OctoberDisney’s remake of “The Lion King” will roar to life on the big screen on Thursday, November 7. Return to the library on Wednesday, November 20 to watch “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” an adventure story about a young man with Down Syndrome who runs away from a residential nursing home to follow his dream. In his quest to attend wrestling school he meets several interesting characters who join him on his journey to fight in the ring. Both movies begin at 1:15 p.m.

“The College on the Cornfield Reaches 125 Years”Dr. Jerry Pfabe has devoted time to researching the history of Concordia University, where he has taught for many years. On November 18 Concordia will celebrate their 125th anniversary of being a learning institution in Seward. Dr. Pfabe will show the original pictures of this German Lutheran preparatory teacher’s school located in the open fields of a small town with only 13 students in one building. Through stories and photos Dr. Pfabe will lead the audience through Concordia’s history with more than a century of changes. Everyone is welcome to attend “The College on the Cornfield Reaches 125 Years” anniversary program on Sunday, November 17 at 2 p.m. There will be time for questions as well as refreshments.
