Introduction
I have developed an interest in libraries inother countries
I had read some of the editorials aboutthe Cuban situation in U.S. newspapers
I think this research is important to thelibrary and information professionbecause of its apparent violation of theidea of free access to information

Overview
In April of 2003, a group of
Cuban individuals, including journalists and librarians, werearrested.
Dr. Jos Luis Garca Paneque isone of the many Cubanlibrarians that have been held ina Cuban prison since 2003.
The librarians arrested were incarcerated because theywere allowing Cuban citizens to have access to their personal collections (independent library).

Overview continued
The Cuban nation is a Communisticsociety and has strict restrictions in placeto monitor the type of information their citizens can have access to.
Since their arrest many organizations around the worldhave demanded their release.
Through my research I plan to show how the library
community has responded to the incident. I will look specifically at the American Library Association(ALA) as well as the International Federation of LibraryAssociations (IFLA).
