Thinking of Becoming a Large Goods Vehicle Driver?
If you are considering earning a living from driving a large good’s vehicle (LGV) and are unsure where to start, here is
a brief summary of the stages required to achieve your LGV licence. You must be over 18 years of age and hold a
full car licence.
STEP 1 & 2: ATTEND A MEDICAL AND APPLY FOR YOUR PROVISIONAL LGV LICENCE (we can supply you with a
starter pack).
Our starter pack contains medical forms (D4) together with details of a local medical practice which conducts
LGV medicals efficiently and cost effectively. The form will be completed by the doctor once you have
undergone your medical.
Also, within the pack is your LGV licence application form (D2) together with supporting notes on its
completion. This should be completed by the applicant and sent to the DVLA (addressed envelope) along
with the completed D2 form and both parts of your current driving licence. There is no charge for applying
for an LGV Licence.
Your provisional licence will normally take between 2-3 weeks to be returned to you, assuming there are no
problems with your application.
STEP 3: BOOK YOUR THEORY AND HAZARD PERCEPTION TESTS
Once you have received your provisional licence, you can contact us on 01469 577656 and we can arrange your
theory tests. Alternatively, you can independently book your LGV theory tests - Multiple Choice and Hazard
There are a large number of theory test centres locally so if you cannot find the desired test date in your nearest test
centre, you may be able to book in nearby. Currently there is a two-week lead time for your theory tests.
STEP 4: CALL US ON: 01469 577656.
When you have passed both your theory and hazard perception tests and have received your pass certificates, you are then ready to commence your practical training! Our experienced and knowledgeable instructors will provide you with the skills and understanding required to prepare you for your practical test at the end of the course. The test will be carried out by an independent examiner at our local D.O.T. test centre in Grimsby. He will monitor your driving skills whilst driving round the streets of Grimsby and Cleethorpes and will provide you with feedback and a written assessment of your performance. Should you not wish to take the recommended number of lessons, we are happy to devise a different timetable and quote a price accordingly. Alternatively, you may not wish to take the intensive course and wish to do your training ‘as and when’. Whatever your requirements, we will do our very best to meet them. Call us or email us today to arrange a convenient timetable that suits your skills and fits in with your work commitments. Discounts are available for candidates requiring training for Cat C and C+E, as well as Initial Driver CPC. Call us for a price.
DID YOU GET YOUR FULL CAR LICENCE AFTER JANUARY 1997 AND HAVE NO CATEGORY C OR D ON YOUR LICENCE? DO YOU WANT TO EARN A LIVING FROM DRIVING LGV?
If you answered yes to both above questions, then your training is not complete. You must take your Initial Driver CPC qualification before you can get paid for driving for a living. The qualification is in two parts:
Module 2 Theory Case Study Test (Fee £23) – A computerised theory test based on case studies and sat at a theory test centre. This must be taken before you are eligible to sit Module 4 Practical Test. The test requires the candidate to attend the driving test centre with an LGV vehicle. The half hour test requires the candidate to answer questions and demonstrate their ability regarding vehicle safety and proper use.
We can offer advice to help you through your Part 2 and provide the documentation and practical training to help you pass your Part 4.
If you passed your car test in the UK before 1997 & have a C1 on your licence you have a choice to do the
Initial CPC (above) or our 5 day Periodic CPC to gain your 35 hours.
DID YOU GET YOUR LGV LICENCE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 2009? If so, you are exempt from the Initial Driver CPC Qualification but do have to undergo 35 hours of periodic training to demonstrate that you are keeping up to date with requirements of the industry. We hold several courses which are eligible to earn drivers' hours. Please contact us for details of intensive and individual modular driver CPC courses, ADR. The link below will take you to a website in which you can purchase a Module 2 theory test DVD which has proved
