A message from Normand E. Deschene, President and CEO of Lowell General HospitalA message from Normand E. Deschene, President and CEO of Lowell General Hospital

Rising on the Lowell General Hospital campus is the framework for the future of healthcare excellence. A tangible commitment to the communities we serve, the Legacy Project construction that encompasses our campus is driven by our vision to be one of the best hospitals in America. The six-story tower represents our focused efforts to create a state-of-the-art hospital for our community. Looking back, 2010 was a year that saw the culmination of many important projects and noteworthy achievements. One exceptional accomplishment this year was our acceptance into the Magnet Recognition Program®. Granted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Magnet® designation recognizes healthcare organizations that are committed to nursing excellence, professionalism, and patient-focused care. The application process spanned a two-year period and brought together employees across the hospital, uniting them with a common goal. The result was an application document 2,546 pages in length, weighing more than 38 pounds, which earned Lowell General a place among only eight hospitals in Massachusetts, and six percent of hospitals nationwide, to achieve Magnet status.

Another significant long-term goal of our organization is to be an employer of choice in the Merrimack Valley. We have made incredible strides toward this goal using employee feedback as our guide to increased workplace satisfaction. We reached unprecedented milestones in 2010, when Lowell General Hospital was recognized by the Globe 100 Top Places to Work and the Boston Business Journal’s Best Places to Work. Included in the large company category in both surveys, the Globe 100 ranked Lowell General as the top hospital employer in the Commonwealth and as number four in the large company category overall.

It is evident that the legacy Lowell General Hospital is building goes beyond bricks and mortar to impact the future health and lives of people in our community. By strategically evaluating the needs of our citizens, we have been able to plan and implement successful projects of great magnitude, propelled by our vision to provide the best in healthcare services to our friends, families and neighbors.

Together, with our employees, physicians, volunteers and our generous donors, we stand poised to transform the healthcare landscape of our region, now and for generations to come.

In Good Health,

Normand E. Deschene President and Chief Executive Officer

The Lowell General Hospital medical staff, with its diverse wealth of expertise and talent, is committed to delivering exceptional healthcare in the Merrimack Valley. While each physician is personally accountable for patient care, our true strength is in our collaboration of knowledge and skills, resulting in the best possible care. Working together, we ensure patients have clear pathways for diagnosis and treatment, leading to higher quality. Our exceptional medical staff of primary care and specialty providers strive to make Lowell General Hospital one of the best community hospitals in the nation.

Over the past year, our medical staff achieved top ratings from our insurance partners such as Blue Cross Blue Shield in measures of quality care and efficiency. Working together, we have elevated care standards, reduced complications, and improved quality of life for our patients. Additionally, the medical staff has been fortunate to work with nursing and patient care teams whose unparalleled professionalism and commitment have earned Magnet® designation.

Just as being a Magnet institution helps to attract the best in nursing talent, our success as a medical community has enabled us to bring new physicians to the area when many hospitals in the state are suffering attrition. In 2010 we welcomed more than 70 new physicians to our team from 18 specialty areas, including 8 primary care physicians. Our strong partnerships with leading institutions such as Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Lahey Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital all help to bolster the expertise available for our patients.

It is an exciting time to be part of Lowell General Hospital, as we accelerate the progress of medicine through new technology and advances in treatment. The implementation of the next phase of our electronic medical record in April 2011, computerized order management, will enable the medical staff to work more efficiently and collaboratively. And, as the Legacy Project progresses, we look forward to the new physical space it will bring, along with the ability to meet the needs of our community and modern medicine both today and in the future.

I am proud to practice with my colleagues at Lowell General Hospital as we strive to provide excellent healthcare to our community and celebrate our joint achievements.

Respectfully,

Arthur M. Lauretano, MD President, Medical Staff

SERVICEPatient and Family-Centered Service

Offering an exceptional experience is at the core of our commitment to service. Interactions and assistance with patients as well as their families or caregivers is nearly always a part of the hospital experience.

The Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) was one of the most important additions to our community partnerships and collaborations in 2010. The PFAC is composed of volunteer patient and family advisors, as well as clinicians and administrators. Its purpose is to strengthen collaboration between patients and family members and the healthcare team, enhancing our ability to deliver the highest standard of safe, comprehensive and compassionate healthcare.

The 10 patient and family members of the PFAC began meeting in 2010, and from the start launched a powerful alliance to share their experiences and work with us to impact care.

With the active involvement of our patients and families, we can address what is important to our community, and find opportunities together to improve quality, service, safety, access, education, satisfaction and loyalty.

Reassuring Comfort

While the hospital grounds have been bustling with activity and progress, our commitment to the patient experience and ways that we can meet their comfort and privacy has remained at the forefront for our patient care teams.

Through effective planning and extensive communications, we have kept our patients and visitors informed and our staff prepared to address concerns before they surface. Information, signage and support helped everyone along the patient care path – from the front desk to the bedside nurses and aides – to reassure those in our care of their safety and to address their comfort.

Care was uninterrupted for patients at the Cancer Center as the building was separated from the main hospital upon the start of Legacy construction and the work began adjacent to their clinical areas. Quietly and out of view, a former office space in a heavily trafficked area was transformed into the beautiful, 12-bed, MP-1 unit without disrupting flow or care.

National Recognition for Service

You know something outstanding was accomplished if national recognition across 100 organizations places you at the top. Lowell General Hospital’s Director of Facilities, Bill Charette was recognized for his work in 2010 as one who “Enhances the Patient Experience” by the Healthcare Facility Solutions Division of our partner, Sodexo.

“Bill has been an integral leader with our facilities operations which have increased in scope with the Legacy Project. From his assistance with the planning and implementing of facilities improvements, essential power operations and master planning, he is a true asset to Lowell General,” says Win Brown, Vice President of Administration.

The national recognition was measured by substantial and consistent improvement in patient, employee and user loyalty as measured by a third party measurement tool.

Serving All Faiths

Spiritual care fosters support for a person’s spiritual or religious faith. Last year, our Spiritual Care Services were enhanced to continue to improve this important aspect of wellness through programs, physical space and support members.

In 2010, renovation of the former Chapel allowed for the creation of a sacred space to be used by patients, visitors and staff. This peaceful retreat is often used for meditative practice, prayer, and reflection, providing for spiritual needs. Our Palliative Care Program was launched with the addition of a certified Palliative Care Nurse to assist with end-of-life concerns and comfort measures. Additional services were added with a Chaplain to serve patients as well as their caregivers.

“Patient care goes far beyond the bedside, it is the responsibility of each member of the Lowell General family. From the person cleaning a room to the physician performing surgery, every interaction is an opportunity for us to make patients aware of how privileged we are to be entrusted with their healthcare.” Winfield S. QUALITYAchieving Standards of Excellence

Lowell General Hospital Receives National Accreditation for Cardiac Rehabilitation

The Cardiac Rehabilitation department at Lowell General Hospital was certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation for meeting essential standards for quality patient care in cardiac rehabilitation. This is the only peer-reviewed accreditation in the nation designed to review individual facilities for adherence to standards and guidelines for cardiac rehabilitation centers. A long-standing component of cardiovascular care at Lowell General Hospital, cardiac rehabilitation is the recovery phase for a patient who has suffered a heart attack, undergone angioplasty, or had surgery to treat heart disease.

Recent studies show patients who complete cardiac rehabilitation increase their likelihood of a successful recovery and lower their chance of a repeat heart attack.

Lowell General Hospital Recognized as a Community Value 100™ Hospital by Cleverley + Associates

For the fourth consecutive year, Lowell General Hospital was recognized as a top-ranked Community Value Provider by Cleverley + Associates, a leading healthcare financial consulting firm specializing in operational benchmarking and performance enhancement strategies.

According to the Community Value Index®, a proprietary index created by Cleverley + Associates to measure the value a hospital provides to its community, Lowell General Hospital ranks among the top 20 non-teaching, large hospitals nationwide. “A hospital provides value to the community when it is financially viable, is appropriately reinvesting back into the facility, maintains a low cost structure, has reasonable charges, and provides high quality care to patients,” states James Cleverley, co-author of the publication.

Lowell General Hospital Recognized as a Gold Standard Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology

Lowell General Hospital received recognition as a Gold Standard facility accredited as a Breast Center of Excellence by American College of Radiology (ACR). After extensive review by the ACR, the hospital’s consistent quality performance for Mammography, Breast Ultrasound, and Steriotactic Breast Biopsy officially earned the three-year accreditation (their original accreditation began in 2005). The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards, following a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

Lowell General Hospital Earns American Heart Association 2010 Gold Plus Award for Treatment of Heart Failure

Lowell General Hospital was recognized by the American Heart Association with the 2010 Gold Plus award for implementation of their Get With The GuidelinesSM – Heart Failure Performance program. This achievement indicates that the hospital reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients with 85% or higher compliance to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for 24 consecutive months.

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines program recognizes hospitals for their success in using Get With The Guidelines to improve quality of care and outcomes for heart disease and stroke patients.

QUALITY

Measuring quality in healthcare spans every component of the patient and family experience as well as that of a hospital’s physicians, employees and the community it serves.

In 2010, the outstanding achievement of Magnet® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) recognized our excellence in patient care as demonstrated in more than 35 areas of focus throughout the entire hospital. e Magnet Recognition Program® of the ANCC provides the ultimate benchmark for patients and their families to measure the quality of care they can expect at a hospital.

“Lowell General Hospital has taken the 88 standards outlined by the ANCC and put them into practice to demonstrate our nursing excellence,” explains Amy Hoey, RN, BSN, MS, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Offi cer. “ ese standards cover aspects of quality patient care as well as standards to empower nurses, advance the profession, promote innovation, and provide transformational leadership. ese elements combined are at the heart and soul of care for our community and provide confi dence that our patients are receiving exceptional care.”

Reaching Magnet designation was the result of several years of preparation and longstanding commitment to nursing and patient care through quality and process improvements as well as interdisciplinary collaboration. More importantly, it indicates the continued commitment by every one of our staff to ensure patient care, quality standards and ongoing improvements within the daily operations and governing of the hospital.

Lowell General is proud to be one of only eight hospitals (out of 134) in Massachusetts that have received Magnet designation and is among the select 6% of hospitals nationwide who have reached this benchmark.

GROWTHGrowing to Meet the Needs of Our Community

The Legacy Project

While the number of people turning to Lowell General Hospital continues to grow, our physical ability to meet those demands has met capacity. As such, the groundbreaking of our Legacy Project in May of 2010 was an exciting step forward to create the space that will afford growth to meet our community’s healthcare needs.

The Legacy Project will enable us to provide more people with greater services, allowing us to continue to expand in all directions – physical space for outpatient services, more capacity for our emergency department and trauma center, additional operating suites to meet the surgical demands, and expansion of birthing and maternity areas.

Construction of our 145,000 square foot expansion and renovation project moved ahead of schedule. Accelerated progress resulted in projected interest savings that will allow us to outfit more of the new facility and begin transitioning earlier. Following demolition of the Shedd Building, deep excavation and steel erection began to form the footprint of our new building. Roadways were widened and retaining walls built to support the new three-lane West Road that will improve traffic flow around the campus and prepare for the helipad site. Utilities were re-routed and significant capital upgrades were made to the facilities plant to ensure a seamless transition of power, heating and cooling.

Teams throughout the organization worked together to plan the design, clinical equipment, furniture, fabrics and finishes that will capture the new modern look of the campus, from the soothing atmosphere of new private patient rooms to the contemporary finish of the new lobby.

Our Legacy Project poises Lowell General for continued growth and will provide an economic boost to our area creating construction-related and long-term employment opportunities. The Legacy Project is not only important for the hospital’s future but also for the future of the community.

New Physicians Choose Lowell General Hospital

With the sustained growth Lowell General has experienced over the past few years, can it be any surprise that more new physicians are choosing our hospital than ever before.

In 2010, Lowell General Hospital welcomed 70 new physicians to our team from 18 specialty areas, including 8 primary care physicians to manage the care of our patients.

In addition, strong partnerships with physicians from leading institutions such as Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, Lahey Clinic, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, combine to offer a comprehensive level of expertise to our patients in the Merrimack Valley.

Patient Comfort and Privacy

In 2010, many adaptations of the existing space in the hospital were made to provide more room for clinical care in the current facility. Our newest unit, MP1, located on the first floor, helps to expand capacity during our busiest times.

This 12-bed unit was designed to give patients and their families a comfortable environment for care when they are ready to move from the Emergency Department, but still require monitoring before going home or moving to another unit in the hospital. With the completion of the Legacy Project in 2012, this unit will integrate with the new Emergency Department and Trauma Center.

Improving Healthcare Access in the Community

In 2010, we began the planning and permitting process for a new building on our Lowell General Chelmsford campus between 10 and 20 Research Place. The Town of Chelmsford approved the expansion which will include a 30,000 square foot medical office building with ample parking and aesthetic additions such as seating areas and green-space.

The additional building will bring greater access to healthcare specialists and services, with proximity to the kinds of services that relate to care such as outpatient testing, imaging, day surgery, therapy and other supporting care.

Groundbreaking for the new building is scheduled for May 2011 with tenants prepared to begin occupancy in early 2012.

GROWTHGrowing to Meet the Needs of Our Community

The Legacy Project

While the number of people turning to Lowell General Hospital continues to grow, our physical ability to meet those demands has met capacity. As such, the groundbreaking of our Legacy Project in May of 2010 was an exciting step forward to create space that will afford growth to meet our community’s healthcare needs.

Last year, many adaptations of the existing space in the hospital were made to provide more room for clinical care in the current facility.

TeamWalk for CancerCare

New heights were reached in 2010 when the 11th Annual TeamWalk for CancerCare topped $764,000 in donations and in-kind gifts from individuals, corporate sponsors, teams and community supporters. This milestone brings us well on our way to achieving our $1M fundraising goal. Thousands of walkers and volunteers came together to support our cancer patients and their families, in what has come to be known as the Merrimack Valley’s single-largest one-day fundraising event. Thank you to all!

Honorary Chair Jane Marshall, Mrs. Massachusetts, and Co-Chairs Lori Grande from WKLB and Fox’s own “VB” hosted the morning’s Opening Ceremonies. New England Patriots Cheerleaders greeted participants, delicious food and snacks were provided compliments of many area businesses, and TeamWalk partners like Evolution Day Spa offered mini-manicures, hair extensions and more.

LGH Golf Challenge

The 15th Anniversary of the LGH Challenge Golf Tournament was a great success, raising a record $361,000 for the Legacy Fund, the hospital’s capital campaign, which supports the Legacy Project, our new six-story building currently under construction.

On August 30th, golfers enjoyed the challenging terrain of both The Pines and The Oaks Courses at The International in Bolton, MA. Guests also enjoyed luxurious amenities to round out the day, including a barbecue on the course, spa offerings, and special contests and gifts.

Our sincere appreciation is extended to the Tournament sponsor Cain Brothers and Company and the Masters sponsors Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Demoulas Foundation, Gilbane Construction, Lowell Surgical Associates and Trinity EMS, Inc. for their generous support. Thank you also to our many volunteers who helped the day run smoothly.

LGH Ball for Community Health Initiatives

March 6, 2010 marked the 5th Anniversary of Lowell General Hospital’s Ball for Community Health Initiatives. A sold out crowd of 450 guests enjoyed dinner, dancing, and silent and live auctions at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, which was transformed into a décor reminiscent of sultry New Orleans. Under the leadership of committee co-chairs Denise Mills, MD, and Matthew Savory, DO, the gala raised more than $200,000 to support community health initiatives in our region.

Anniversary Sponsor KLIN Spirits was joined by Gold Sponsors Enterprise Bank and New England Inpatient Specialists, and Silver Sponsors Commonwealth Radiology Associates, Lowell Anesthesiology, Merrimack Valley Emergency Associates, Trinity EMS, Eastern Bank and Merrimack Valley Pathology.

Through the generous support of our corporate sponsors and Ball patrons, we were able to raise vital funds for this year’s highlighted initiatives including the “Beds for Kids” project of The Lowell Wish Project, providing new beds and bedding for 200 at-risk children in the city this year. In collaboration with Health and Education Services, Inc., we also created a public service campaign to promote mental health awareness and resources in the Greater Lowell area.

Legacy Fund Chairman Truly Does Leave a Legacy

Lowell General Hospital lost a very dear friend, colleague and dedicated fundraising volunteer last fall when Michael Gilchrist, MD, unexpectedly passed away. Under “Dr. Mike’s” leadership, e Legacy Fund, Lowell General Hospital’s capital fundraising campaign to support the Legacy Project, recorded gifts and pledges of nearly $11M from leadership donors alone! Dr. Mike’s quiet infl uence and gentle persuasion helped secure these gifts and pave the way for the Merrimack Valley’s largest capital campaign to date to enter the public phase. Gifts ranging from $3M to $2,500 were committed during his tenure as Chairman. His passing has left big shoes to fi ll on the campaign committee and many sad hearts among the friends and colleagues who were honored to work alongside him. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

With solicitations to employees and medical staff nearing completion, donors, friends and the general public will be invited to participate in the Legacy Fund and witness the completion of the Legacy Project in 2012.

For more information about the Legacy Fund, including named gift opportunities for as little as $2,500 (which can be pledged over fi ve years), please contact Director of Philanthropy, Ellen Kallman at 978-937-6430 or [email protected]

COMMUNITYMeeting the Needs of Our Community

Lowell General Hospital’s community benefi t program is an essential and integral part of our mission, vision and strategy, refl ected by the importance placed on community benefi t throughout our organization.

In 2010, Lowell General Hospital contributed more than $13.7 million for the health of the fourth largest metropolis in the state. Our Community Benefi t Plan focused on measurable short- and long-term goals in 12 key areas including: cancer, cardiovascular disease, health literacy, healthy weight, mental health and tobacco prevention and intervention. We provide innovative outreach for education, prevention, and screening programs through our Center for Community Health and Wellness.

To identify the areas of opportunity, we instituted the area’s fi rst comprehensive community health needs assessment. We collaborated with the University of Massachusetts, Saints Medical Center and the Greater Lowell Health Alliance. is comprehensive assessment of the community identifi ed future healthcare gaps and areas with the greatest need.

2010 Community Benefit Total:

$13,755,333As a not-for-profi t community hospital, Lowell General is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of the individuals and communities we serve. Each year, Lowell General Hospital develops a Community Benefi t Plan that seeks to identify unmet existing health needs in the community, and to anticipate future health needs, particularly in vulnerable and underserved populations. Every day, our staff , physicians and volunteers work together to meet those needs through quality health services, wellness and education initiatives, charity care, and charitable contributions.

“At Lowell General Hospital, we are committed to improving the overall health status of our community, and specifically, the health problems of medically underserved populations. We focus on identifying existing and future health needs and addressing those needs through new or existing health initiatives, both independently and in collaboration with other community resources. Our dedication to improving the health of those we serve demands that community benefits be at the very core of our mission as a non-profit healthcare organization.”

Healthy Hearts

As a statewide priority to help management of a chronic illness, we tackled cardiovascular disease with a host of programs and activities to enhance prevention, detection, treatment and support.

Cardiovascular risk assessments were held throughout the year, screening more than 320 people. We hosted over 50 programs which educated participants on the signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke including a Get Heart Smart Health Fair, blood pressure screenings, mall walking programs and CPR classes. Finding ways to reach new audiences, we were part of the 2010 Motorcycle Nights at Sampas Pavilion in Lowell, and teamed up with the Lowell Spinners to help “Strike Out Heart Disease” with an awareness-building campaign.

Stomping Out Tobacco Use

Smoking rates in the City of Lowell exceed the state average by more than three times, increasing the risk of lung cancer in our community. In 2010, our eff orts focused on engaging community participation and building initiatives that would educate and prevent the use of tobacco products at all ages. To meet our goals to reduce the use of tobacco by adults and increase knowledge about the dangers of it among youth, we partnered with area schools, the Greater Lowell Health Alliance, the American Lung Association and the Lowell Community Health Center. For the third year we participated in providing tobacco prevention programs to all fi fth grade classes in the Lowell Public Schools, provided smoking cessation classes, and developed a parent program on emerging tobacco products. In an eff ort to reduce the number of women smoking during pregnancy, we incorporated the dangers and risks of tobacco use into our childbirth education classes.

Literacy Isn’t Just About Reading Books

Health literacy focuses on providing education so that people have a greater understanding of aspects that relate to their health.

Our eff orts in 2010 helped to increase the capacity of adults and seniors to obtain, process and understand basic health information, with a focus on their medications. We developed a “Get Med Smart” program which educates the community about medications and provides them with an easy to use home medication list. We shared them with their healthcare providers and the hospital. Additionally, Healthcare Decision education helped to inform people of the importance of planning for an emergency or a time when they may not be able to make health decisions for themselves – helping to resolve dilemmas for patients and their caregivers at a most vulnerable time.

rough healthcare literacy eff orts, we helped to keep people safe as well as encouraged personal empowerment for their own health.
