Justification
Recent trend in ESL classroom teaching indicates the necessity of integrating
literature because of its rich potential to provide an authentic model of language use.
Among literary genres, short stories seem to be the most suitable choice for children
due to its potential to help students enhance the four main skills – listening,
speaking, reading and writing. Moreover, it is effectively help by the motivational
benefits embedded in the stories. Theoretically, using of short story in language
teaching is very advantageous for it offers four benefits – authentic material, cultural
enrichment, language advancement and personal growth ( Collie & Slater, 1991 ).
For the 2 samples that we chose for the Years 1 – 3, the story of Jake And
The Robber and The Good Hearted Cockerel offers the good moral values that
teacher can absorb to the students during the teaching and learning activity. For
examples, Jake who is the robber actually not the cruel robber because, he robbed
people to help the poor people. But for our culture, teacher can explain that
according to our Malaysian culture robber is still not a good job. We can help poor
people with other way which is more appropriate. The story of The Good Hearted
Cockerel teach us how to stay loyal to our master. For this story, teacher can
introduce the moral values that contained in the story in other to show the student
the good part of the story and also to bring the learners to learn to see a world
through another’s eyes, observing human values and a different kind of living and
discovering that others living in very different societies. Through story, learners can
deepen their cultural understanding by listening and reading the story together with
their teacher. So, teacher need to make sure that the story is also related to their real
life experience. Besides, the setting and the illustration is very interesting and
colourful. There are varieties of coloured pictures which can attract the learners’
attention. My partner was using one of the book entitled Jack And The Robbers, and
according to her reading, the story is easy to understand because it shows the flow
of the story where the characters move from place to place. In other words, teacher
is helping the learners to imagine and understanding the describe story. At first,
teacher tell the story and learners just listen, so if the story is clearly narrated by the
teacher, the learners will sure like the story. For these two books, the length of the
story is in adequate and suitable for their level and their age. It is important for

teacher to choose the suitable length of story book because this is to avoid children
from lose attention during the story telling conducted by the teacher.
The other 2 story books that we chose for our Years 4 – 6 children are The
Little Red Hen ( Folktales ) and Snow White And The Seven Dwarf – The Long
Version( Fairy Tales ). The Little Red Hen was extracted from the Collection Of My
Treasury Animals Tales And Rhymes published by Hinkler Books Pty Ltd, Australia.
We chose the book and the story because the characters are familiar with the
children. They know the certain animals for examples, hen, chick, cat and pig, but I
made some changes for one of the animals to respect my children’s culture. For the
Snow White And The Seven Dwarf – The Long Version, they might heard about the
original version of the story, so why not we introduced them the new length of the
Snow White and some attractive illustrations. We agreed to choose these two books
for the Years 4 – 6 children, they have more authentic words, themes and
unexpected language. For my opinion, it is a chance for teacher to introduce new
words through story in order to help the learners to enhance their vocabulary
knowledge and expose the learners to become familiar with different forms of
language. Literary texts expose learners to fresh themes and unexpected language.
In this sense, ‘a literary text is authentic text, real language in context, to which wecan respond directly’,( Brumfit And Carter, 1986, p. 15 ). The storyline and the length
is suitable for their level. The story shows the smooth and understandable flows of
the storyline. For The Little Red Hen, I think it convey the happy ending when the
hen lastly can get its own bread and not sharing with other animals which are lazy to
help the hen to make the flour. It shows the win-win situation between the hen and
other animals. Overall, these 4 story books really suitable for our students and we
will use some of the book for our story telling session. We will use Jack And The
Robbers for the Year 3 class and The Little Red Hen for the Year 4 class. We will
use the books as the main resource and the slide presentation for our students to
see the illustrations. We think, we have made a best choice for our story books and
we hope that we can make it interesting during the presentation.
