EDITOR'S LETTER BY MARIE SOUDRÉ-RICHARDFOUNDER

We hope you’ll agree that this Little Fashion Book is a liberating and inspirational place. This season, we were inspired by mythological stories with their iconic and playful characters. Transported back to our childhood thinking about Zeus, Icarus, Theseus, we wanted to bring them into your child’s world. They are sure to be a source of inspiration and curiosity for you and your children.

LFG is always on the lookout for great basics as well as directional and original niche pieces. This season we wanted to bring you a new vision of design using colour analysis. Nacarat is a colour agency specialising in the analysis of colours and their meanings. They have created a colour guide accompanied with didactic, poetic and accurate texts. Find them on page 28.

Yet again our ad visual for this season is about breaking conventions. A photo taken by Patrick Swirc of Al Gore has stayed in my mind for a long time. The photo is of a man, standing with a serene yet challenging expression, on his right hand side is the image of a monstrous, deformed face. This contrast was the foundation of our image. In our ad visual you can see Paul, in his own world yet, at the same time he is disrupting this world. In the image Paul plays two roles; that of the child and the monster.

Far away from this mythical and outlandish world is The Medium Fashion Gallery. Images created by Carl-Oskar Linné show an accurate vision of teenagers, capturing both their awkwardness and gangly charm.

Here at LFG we never seem to stop what with always being on the ball, following trends and of course trying to create new ones. Whilst this year has been far from easy for the world of designers, it is encouraging to see that there are still those out there willing to take risks. Take a look at our new selection of cutting edge designers: Chloé, Kid by 3.1 Phillip Lim and Vilebrequin, as well as the chic selection of push chairs from Mc Laren and Silver Cross.

However that doesn’t stop the titans from being far better dressed than in any previous Odyssey! Boys will be inspired to be even bigger super heroes. The Gods and Goddesses wear white well, the iconic colour of this issue. White is omnipresent, itismostdefinitelythe colour of the season and is at the heart of the Battle of Troy – let’sfindoutwhy!

Comeandfollowthisflockof minimarathoners as they go past the Mount Olympus and then return to the Opéra Garnier. As soon as you arrive the curtain will go up and the orchestra will begin to play… applaud!

music, this season’s collections look great as rhymes and songs. With the help of Edith Hamilton’s bible, I tried to decipher the misadventures of these mythological heroes and multi-membered monsters. So involved was I, that there were times when I felt as though I were really having tea with Minotaur. Admittedly, my Zeus is rather ironic whilst my Icarus writes poetry. The set? It is of colossal proportions, but only in our imagination! A gigantic tree

A light beam unveils the head of a rooster in the sky. All the muses look up. A sweet melody is played while Heracles is speaking. HERACLESMuse, take your harp and play this rhyme. Mnemosyne obeys. I will tell you the story of the Night. The other Muses turn around while taking small dance steps. The Night fathered seven times.

A C major marks the end of the sentence. The sun disappears into the wings, preceding a large moon.

The Night appears on a chariot pulled by owls, followed by the waltz of the Hours. Two Games have scrambled into the group. The stage is in darkness, only the characters are illuminated. Muses from the Arts try their hand at being painters. Flicking paint with toothbrushes or delicately daubing to transform skirts, dresses and cardigans into real master pieces. Using red and pink palettes, these brush strokes can be dots or abstract splodges. The looks are romantic; the young ladies combinerobinsandfincheswiththeswirls,however the duck is the king this season. Feather headbands are the accessory this season, the Muse may like to mess around with paint but she still likes to look adorable!

The Milky Way is the inspiration for this season’s evening collection. Delicately powdered, and stylishly smoky; this season’s colour palette is seen in the stars. Pale pink is seen with inky blue, whilst frosty black and grey are used as accent colours. Look up at the sky! The Moon looks like a cat with a moustache, whilst the constellations are embedded into knitted bloomers. The Night loves sequins and shooting stars: sparkly ballerinas, bows and embroidered pearls, all shine with a hint of silver. The wind blows thefrillsandflounceswhilsttheplanetsspin around.

her desire to create a shoe that was like a second-skin.Shehasdefinitelysucceededincreating a shoe that is for travelling and walking, as well as being incredibly supple, lightweight and trend conscious. Since 2004, world-wide fashionistas can’t wait to get their hands on the latest styles from the likes of Keira Knightley to Drew Barrymore. If she was only able to keep one pair of shoes would she keep one of her own creations,

surprisingly not! Although we would! Let us not forget about Petite Maloles, a labour of love that was inspired by her two daughters Olympia and Anna.

Clara : Could you paint us a picture of a typical Maloles shoe?Maloles : Each and every one of my shoes has a strong visual and graphic identity whilst being poetic and heart-warming.

Maloles adore. Her passion is so infectious that it makes us passionate too! Maloles tingles with excitement when she speaks; it makes us want to be exactly like her. Her passion seeps out of every pore, and talking to her you can’t help but notice her zest for life and shoes!

The inspiration behind Maloles came from travelling; it’s no surprise that this nurtured

I love the element of surprise and the magic of the heart’s desires. I also love, in the second degree, to take conventional, strict norms and take them out of their context, for example; mixing up the traditional liberty print, playing around with volumes, and imposing objects. For me, each shoe is a jewel; its creation is not rational but entirely emotional.

What is your designing process?Iamveryinfluencedbybeautyandtheenvironment that surrounds me, whether that be an exhibition, a book, an inspiring material, that is all it takes for an idea to be born. After that, I start to think about ribbons, sparkles and the shape of the heel. It is just like creating a recipe, a sprinkling of magic and everything becomes clear. I also like to test things out in my head by visualizing and scribbling different designs. A shoe is a 3D object, it is all about playing with proportions – it can be a great success or a complete failure just because of 2mm.

A single source of inspiration: Food and smells, especially those that surround my daughters.A timeless place: Ibiza, j'adore. Friends, pine trees, the sea, the aromas of Spanish dishes, the light, children playing, the laughs and jokes… A timeless shoe: The ballet pump of course!A colour you love: Turquoise, j'adore. But it’s adifficultcolourtouseonshoes..An influencial artistic movement: Abstract expressionism, painters such as Rothko, Calder, Elizabeth Payton – I would love to have one of their paintings!An inspirational historical period: The Victorian era, I think it is a period that is enriched in many different areas.A cult film: Métropolis. A song you’ll never forget: The ‘Mama’ of Olympia, I can see in her eyes that she wants to say so much more than that.A food that you dislike: Cooked carrots - I hate them!A dream: To be able to play with time.

Thetis is a sea goddess. She collects fresh water, winkles and shiny shoes. Thetis is also Achilles’ mother; unfortunately he died because of his heel and his mother. She was too busy admiring her pretty feet; she forgot to spray his heel with Styx water. To punish her, Zeus made her drink a cup of it. Ever since, the goddess cries sand tears onto her silvery shoes.

well-considered design for children. With the birth of my daughter, I had this ideal that everyone designed clothing, furniture and spaces in the same realm that I see beauty and consideration. I was swiftly and sadly disappointed. But rather than sulk in my new found misery, I decided to do something about it. When I stumbled upon LFG, I instantly understood that someone else had the same ideals in place…but for clothing. The curations, the brand, the minimal aesthetic of what it embodied was a breath of fresh air. It was not until I actually met Marie one afternoon in Paris that it all becamesolidified.SowhenIwasaskedtograce these very pages, I was honored and humbly accepted.The philosophy behind Minor Details steams from the ideal that children have the right to beautiful yet functional environments. There is a melody within the walls of every day life that can be both beautiful and stimulating at the same time...with the right direction. That's where I come in. Igniting curiosity and wonder within the mind of a child is my main goal. I approach this challenge with each individual child in mind.One of the trends that I’ve noticed is the need to be green. In my opinion,

this does not have to be limited to new greener, better products, but rather include vintage children’s furniture as well. I’m very tired of the instilled corporate ideal of chunky plastic, primary colored toys and play structures. One trend that I’m currently enjoying is the mix of gray and monochrome tones. There is something special about a peaceful and serene palette with pops and subtle hints of color.

We think of white as pure and innocent, but it’s actually quite crafty. It can quietly invade our

interior décor without us even noticing! But a lot of people would think of it as colourless? Not at

all! Only white can catch the light and its thousand littlereflectstocreatesubtlenuances:ithasapinkhue at dawn, becomes blue-ish under the sky and issetaflameatsunset.So,farfrombeingneutral,

white has its own moods but always seems bright. It’s easy to capture its accents! White is brilliant

and sparkling, but can be livened up with just the merest hint of colour. A touch of blue, a soupcon

of green, or a pinch of turquoise willhighlight its tone.

Random and erratic, green is never where you might expect it to be. It’s sometimes associated with nature, sometimes linked to luck or to chance. Enjoy the game! Is

it good or bad fortune? Is Mother Nature playing mind games with us? Goethe, the naturalist, saw green as the most soothing

of all colours. Our little collection of seven greens can be mixed and matched with very fresh pink, very soft agate and

with a very slightly frosty antique pink; green is sometimes happy, sometimes a

little cunning. Use it freely - it’s like a real fountain of youth!

It can be as tender as spring and as deep as a beautiful mountain lake. Green - the

Natural tones come and go, one minute they’re in, the next they’re out. Beige is often associated with raw materials, perhaps a little

rough and ready, but actually, beige is softness personified.It’sdefinitelynotdull,andcan

be full of surprises: look at how it becomes brighter when combined with pastel colours;

and it’s at its best when it catches the light from a dazzling sun – but beware of putting it

The designer Phillip Lim is the new idol on the New York fashion scene. Everyone

loves his catwalk collections: he designs simple, structured shapes but always with a quirky detail, which is his trademark. This

summer, his inspiration comes from Picasso’s collages from the Dada period. The show

opens with a scarlet suit, but it’s in one piece. It’s the suit of tomorrow, says the

Jess Cartner-Morley, fashion editor of The Guardian, gives us her guide for this summer trends.

Jess Carnter-Morley:Watching the Summer 2010 catwalk shows, I fell in love with sunshine yellow trousers (at Balenciaga) and bird-print dresses (at Miu Miu), sand-toned, clean-cut dresses (everywhere) and even cute clogs (ditto). Do I want them in my wardrobe? Maybe not: yellow is not the most forgiving shade, and animal prints look a bit literal-minded on grown-ups. But that's not to say I'm not going to buy them: I will buy them for my children, instead.

That is the joy of children's fashion. Catwalks and magazines lay out before us a glittering selection of looks, like a giant box of expensive chocolates. For ourselves, we have to exercise a little restraint - it seldom

does a grown woman any favours to wear every look from the catwalk, any more than it does to demolish a whole box of chocolates - but with our children, we can indulge. Clothes that would look plain daft on grown-ups look absolutely magical on children. But dressing children as a mum rather than a fashion stylist starts, of course, with comfort and quality.

Much as we would love to have photographs on the mantelpiece of our littledarlingsinthefinerythatmostcatchesour eye, we know all too well that dress a child in a sweater that itches or a party dress that is too rigid and the results will be the very opposite of picture-perfect. This summer sees stripes in all shapes and sizes, some more slanting than straight, some as slender as the skyline – and all of them a real hit amongst the Titans. Striking and loud, we love them in bright red, worn with dungarees or Bermuda shorts. The striped sailor’s smock is still the must-have of the summer; but with a twist this year: the colour is rich caramel or warm butter, worn with shorts or well cut jeans. All for maximum comfort - after all, not everyone can be a Titan. CATTI ÅMAN, TUSS DESIGNERLFG INTERVIEWS

timeless and functional clothes, with subtle details that sometimes you only notice when the garment is worn. At the children’s fashion trade shows, Tuss stands out because the main theme has not shifted one millimetre since February 2006: the design is consistent and apparent; Tuss is not fashion but a concept. For Catti, comfort and pleasure are the most important things when designing children's clothes. Her daughters seem to accept this

philosophy - even if the youngest occasionally asks for a pink princess dress! Clara: The lack of colours in the Tuss collection is very noticeable. Can you explain why? Catti: I love white, beige, grey and black and all the various tones of these colours. These colours symbolise calm and serenity to me, and when they are worn, they enhance the physical characteristics of people: if you wear a bright colour

When describing the Tuss collections, we automatically compare them to Bauhaus architecture: there’s a strict adherence to the austere shapes, the monochrome colours,thesimplelinesandclearlydefineddesign. Catti includes these values in all her designs for Tuss and each season she cleverly reinvents them, because actually simplicity isn’t all that easy to achieve. She is inspired by Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Helmut Lang and also A.P.C. Catti creates

or a strong print, the eye is attracted to theoutfitratherthantothepersonwhowears it. People often tell me that these are colours for adults and I think there is a tendency to classify children by gender and colour - blue for boys, pink for girls. Many of my designs are unisex, so each child can choosetheoutfitandthecolourtheylike.

Tell us about the Tuss shop in Stockholm? Who are your customers?After studying History of Art at l’École du Louvre in Paris, I went back to Stockholm andIknewIdefinitelywantedtocreatesomething on my own. Later, when I opened the new shop, Tuss was more than simply clothes; it was a concept. I designed the space so that it was like a compact unit full of useful things for kids, from white Converse shoes to Aigle wellies, from basic t-shirts to cashmere jumpers. I chose the products for their qualities and timeless style rather than for their brand.

I think that Tuss customers are people who are sensitive to design and architecture, who love black and the fact that logos are not visible.

When the cult brand Le Mont St Michel decided to launch a children’s range, they wanted to create clothes that were mini versions of the best from the adult collection. A meeting between Marie Milan, Le Mont St Michel artistic director, and LFG got the project up and running. As the brand’s customers had been asking for a children’s range for a long time, it really was just a matter of time before it was launched. Marie Milan explains that the brand promotes an authentic image, and there’s something nostalgic in the name that’s linked to childhood. Like a postcard from a seaside holiday. The objective of the brand is to create a micro wardrobe consisting of essentials in hand-picked materials. The collection has lots of knitwear, always of the same inimitable quality for which the brand is renowned. The knitwear includes little striped jumpers and tartan cardigans. Best worn when you’re enjoying the culinary delights of Brittany!

LE MONT ST MICHELLFG EXCLUSIVE

In each Kicokids collection, there’s something crazy and quirky. Every season, Tia Ciabani,

the brand’s American designer, comes up with an incredibly creative and imaginative

theme. The brand focuses mainly on knitwear and the clothes are perfectly constructed, in natural materials, that are always beautifully soft, comfortable and of very good quality. The inspiration for this season comes from

the New York photographer Albert Delamour. Imagine a kaleidoscope and you’ll see how

Zeus likes reading, but only what he’s written himself. As Zeus is the king of the

gods, he writes the past, the present and the future. From time to time, he writes lovely,

funny books, in which he tells stories about what he’s seen happening on earth from

his cloud. He talks about animals, men and moods, and he sorts out the world by colour. A Cyclops illustrates his stories, so that Zeus is able to stay absolutely focused

on his writing.

FOLLOWING THE WHITE RABBITTHE LFG BOUTIQUE

Two little bright eyes. A mischievous look. The white rabbit by Egmont Toys1 on my desk suddenly comes to life. He’s bouncing down into the showroom and wants me to follow him…I hang up the phone, and follow the rabbit. Little Rabbit is hopping around in the aisles. Swirls and head spinning. Here I am inside a strangely familiar wooden house adorned with translucent and colourful panels2 … What’s happening to me? The showroom looks so huge for someone now so small! I keep on following my guide who is still in a hurry. A gigantic mushroom with its vermilion cap3 is standing in my way. I sneak into the maze of the showroom which unveils hundreds of wonders. Right upon a wall, a clan of squirrels is having a cheerful conversation with a band of blue and orange robots4. Around the corner a puzzling ceremony

seems to take place: sitting down on big green and pink clouds5, high colour and jolly characters; Larry, Bob and Nulle6 are throwing a tea party, and I’m their guest. Wanting to give me a perfect welcome, they give me a gorgeous headband with a golden bow7. What an amazing scene! Rabbit in a hurry keeps going. Inside a kitchen cupboardIfindabagof multicolouredbeans8 and a bright red rocket9. Rabbit winks at me. I taste a pink bean. Dizzy spell. Here I am, sitting astride the rocket andflyingoverParis,fromNotre-Dametothe Tuileries gardens, a fascinating, magic, child-friendly Paris10. My vision is blurred. InaflashI’mbackintheshowroom.Therabbit is still indulging in his frantic race, now driving a black and yellow car11. He points at a red car12. So many adventures for one single day! Had someone ever told me that one day I would be racing with a white

rabbit in the middle of the showroom, I would never have believed them! I’m driving fast, zigzagging between majestic high chairs that look like stately thrones13, driving past a laughing elephant14, then rushing through a colourful house15… White Rabbit is driving away and disappears. Blank screen. The phone rings, drawing me out of my sweet torpor as though I were waking up. Sitting at my desk, I’m back to my familiar environment. White Rabbit sits still while diffusing a soft and soothing light. What was this strange dream? White Rabbit seems to smile at me. Come on, it’s a lamp! Well don’t we all know after all that anything is possible at LFG?
