Using Connectors

Constructing an effi cient search for faster results.

To research an issue using key words and phrases on LNAU, fi rst have a clear understanding of what terms closely relate to your issue. Next, type these key words or phrases into the search terms fi eld. Finally, select strategic connectors for the exact relationship in which you desire your terms to be.

Tip: Start your search broadly by using the AND connector between your terms. If you retrieve too many documents, narrow it down by replacing AND with w/p or w/s

Commonly used connectors:

and Mandatory that both terms are discussed within the same document.Example: professional and misconduct fi nds documents that contain both the words professional and misconduct anywhere in the document. This is the broadest connector available.

w/p Finds the two terms within the same paragraph. Example: corporations act w/p 588g fi nds Corporations Act in the same paragraph as 588G.Note: The w/p connector cannot be combined with the w/n connector.

w/s Finds the two terms within the same sentence.Example: professional w/s misconduct fi nds professional in the same sentence as misconduct.

w/n Finds both terms within n words of each other. n can be any number between 1 and 255. Example: professional w/5 misconduct fi nds professional within fi ve words of misconduct (either word fi rst).

or Finds either term requested. The or connector helps fi nd alternative forms of expression, synonyms, acronyms, etc.Example: contract or agreement fi nds documents that mention the term contract or documents that mention the term agreement.

and not Excludes documents that have the requested term.Example: murder and not manslaughter fi nds documents that discuss murder, but does not retrieve any documents that mention manslaughter.

Tip: Use this connector with caution as it excludes items. Always use this connector at the very end of your search string as everything listed after the connector ‘and not’ will be excluded from your results list.

Wildcards:

! The root expander replaces any number of characters at the end of a word for more effi cient searching.Example: neglig! fi nds negligent, negligently, negligence and negligible.

* The asterisk is a single character wild card and can be used at any point within a word. Example: maximi*e fi nds both maximise and maximize.

Tip: Having trouble spelling the name of a party to a case? Po!ski will locate Popovski, Pomiechowski, Podhaski, Polanski etc.
