DIRECTOR’S NOTES
1982 – Seems like yesterday to me but as we’ve journeyed through this process I’ve been acutely aware of how long ago it really was. So much has changed in the lives of American homes and families which is why THE DINING ROOM is as accessible and interesting today as it was when it was first produced on Broadway in the early eighties. Originally written as a way for the playwright to share his personal observations of the changing Northeastern American culture of family and home, the powerful themes in the script are insightful and provocative for any generation. Changes in structures, both physical and social transform family dynamics and relationships. THE DINING ROOM gives us little glimpses of those changes and the impact they can make.
Our rehearsal process has been fast, furious and fun. For many of these students, this is their first time acting in an LC production. For all it is a unique opportunity to play multiple and varied characters and stretch themselves as actors. For me, it has been challenging to realize how many elements of this play are so familiar to me and my life experience and yet so foreign to the students. It has often been interesting to explain things like telephones with cords, a time when Alzheimer’s was not yet a common diagnosis, and the ways the designs of homes have changed over the years. While it has made me realize my age, it has also given me great appreciation for scripts like THE DINING ROOM that are timeless in their themes and storytelling capabilities. We are excited to share this show with all of you and hope you are able to connect to some of these moments as we have!
*There will be one 15 minute intermission*
