WELCOME On behalf of all the staff in the Multimedia department at St. John’s Central College Cork we would like to welcome you. We hope that this handbook will help you as new students at St. John’s, and that throughout your time here you will develop a level of knowledge and skills leading you to successful careers in the Multimedia sector. No matter what your educational background, there will be an adjustment to your time here at St John’s College. Your teachers are here to facilitate this and to aid you in your time in college being a success, however, your success and experience will ultimately be your own responsibility. The course is not meant to be easy but you should find the workload manageable if you are dedicated to the subject and are prepared to work hard.

PROGRESSION Internal Progression Students who successfully complete Multimedia Level 5, will be offered a place on the Multimedia Level 6 course. External Progression CIT, IT Tralee and LIT: The Multimedia Department has a formal agreement with these colleges.

In 2011-12 the CCPS (Cork Colleges Progression Scheme) was totally revitalised and now St. John’s has negotiated huge opportunities for its students on both Level 5 & 6 programmes to be able to access Level 7 and Level 8 (Year 1 and 2) Degree Programmes in CIT. Full details are available from the Careers Guidance & Counselling Service (Level 3; Room 306) and on the college website www.stjohnscollege.ie

Please take care to attend information sessions normally held after Christmas by the various Departments in CIT (Cork Institute of Technology). Full details of application are available on our website. Students must meet all criteria as laid down according to the negotiated link.

Students must achieve a pass grade or higher in all the mandatory components and 3 of the elective components listed above to attain the FETAC certificate. If a student does not pass enough modules to achieve a full award they get a Component Certificate. A Component Certificate is awarded to a candidate who achieves the pass grade or higher in one or more modules. Grading:

Subject Teachers If you are having a problem with a particular subject, the first point of contact should be the subject teacher. Class Teacher Every class has a class teacher. The class teacher for the Multimedia Course (061MM) is Deirdre McCann. What are class teachers for? The class teacher is the person to go to if you have any concerns, difficulties or issues. If they can not help you, they may direct you to someone who can. The class teacher also monitors student attendance and commitment. If you are absent you will need to provide a wriiten explanation (with a doctors cert, appointment card etc if appropriate) to your class teacher. Class teachers are also responsible for liaising with work experience placements and will check in on you during your two weeks work experience. WORK EXPERIENCE Work Experience is an important part of the Multimedia course, it is a mandatory module, and therefore must be passed for a candidate to gain the full award. There are two weeks for work experience during the year. The dates are: Monday 17th November - Friday 21st November 2014 Monday 9th February – Friday 13th February 2015 Students must secure their own work experience and provide their class teacher with the employers’ contact details. Class teachers will be in contact with employers during work experience. ATTENDANCE POLICY The Multimedia Department expects 100% attendance. See college handbook/diary for full explanation of attendance policy. Poor attendance may result in referral to Attendance Committee, impact on grant or result in withdrawal from course. If you are absent due to medical reasons you should supply your class teacher with a medical certificate. DEADLINE POLICY Projects/assignments etc. must be submitted at deadline as set by Teacher. Extensions can only be arranged through Deputy Principal and only with very good reason. COMPUTER USE POLICY See college diary / college website (www.stjohnscollege.ie) for full outline of computer use policy in St. John’s College. FOOD AND DRINK All food and drink is to be kept to the designated areas i.e. canteens. It is not allowed in classrooms or corridors. COLLEGE ID Students must carry college ID at all times EQUIPMENT POLICY First and second year students have access to all the department equipment. Priority in the final term is given to second years. All equipment must be booked out prior to use with Brid or Deirdre. Equipment must be checked prior to use and signed out by student. Equipment must be returned on agreed date, checked and signed back in. Late return of equipment may compromise the student’s right to use. Equipment cannot be issued to students who do not attend the course on a regular basis. Equipment must be returned in good order. SD cards must be formatted and batteries fully charged. All cables, lenses, tripods plates in order. Students are responsible for equipment in their care and may be liable for any damaged caused.
