Chapter 1

A Sad Farewell

Marie took off her red apron and folded it neatly. Her last shift at Vito’s Italian restaurant had just ended. Now she needed to return the apron to Mrs. Bertoli, the restaurant owner. Marie didn’t want to say good-bye to Mrs. Bertoli, or to anyone else. After six and a half years, her co-workers at Vito’s were more like family members. Her relationship with Mrs. Bertoli, in particular, was very special. Mrs. Bertoli had given Marie this job. She had given her a flexible schedule. And, most importantly, she had given Marie a lot of emotional support. She had encouraged Marie to stay in college even though, at times, the work was overwhelming*.

Vito’s had been closed for nearly thirty minutes. It was strange that Marie suddenly couldn’t find Mrs. Bertoli—or any of her co-workers. The dining room was empty. No one was at the cashier’s station. She looked into the kitchen and didn’t see anyone there. Finally, Marie walked into the separate banquet room that was used for private parties. “SURPRISE!” everyone shouted. Marie put one hand over her mouth and the other over her heart. She was, indeed, very surprised. Mrs. Bertoli and twenty other restaurant employees—cooks, hosts, cashiers, servers, bussers*, and dishwashers—were all waiting for her. There was a long table full of pizzas, pastas, salads, and a beautiful cake that read: Good Luck, Marie. We’ll Miss You!

Marie tried not to cry. For a moment, she stood and stared at her dear friends. Then she walked toward the group and hugged each person. When she got to Mrs. Bertoli, she couldn’t stop the tears.

“Thank you!” said Marie in a shaky voice. “You were so thoughtful to do this.”

“Oh, Marie,” said Mrs. Bertoli, with a wave of her hand. “It’s just a little party. You’re moving on to bigger and better things. And we must celebrate!” Then she signaled for Alonzo, one of the dishwashers, to turn on the Italian music. “And it’s a proud day for me, too,” added Mrs. Bertoli, pushing Marie toward the food. “After all, I think of you as my own child,” she said, her voice also cracking with emotion. “After raising three sons, it was a blessing to have a daughter in my life.”

Marie felt a lump in her throat. This job had been a blessing for her, too. Still, taking orders at Vito’s was not her lifelong dream. She wanted to use her hard-earned college degree in a real job. Four weeks ago, she had an interview for a position at a large PR (Public Relations) firm. Two weeks ago, she had a second interview. Then, one week ago, she was offered a job as an Assistant PR Coordinator. It was just an entry-level position*. And there would be a lot of clerical* work. But there were opportunities for advancement. Marie felt happy—and very lucky.

Of course, Marie would never forget her friends at Vito’s: Mrs. Bertoli, Alonzo, Gina, Carlo, Donna, Joey, and the rest of them. She sat down and enjoyed some delicious mushroom and black olive pizza, spaghetti with marinara sauce, and antipasto salad. Then she and her co-workers posed for pictures next to her favorite mural of Venice. Marie had always loved this painting on the wall. She especially liked the little red boat, among all the others, on the Grand Canal. Suddenly, Marie thought about the red apron draped over the back of her chair. “Oh, this is yours,” she said to Mrs. Bertoli.
