Q Grade score Annotation
1 M5 The candidate identifies the stage and reasons are given for the trend. The reasons are directly linked to the pyramid, e.g. “the wider width at the top …”. One characteristic of the New Zealand population (ethnicity) is explained with some detail, with a weaker second factor (gender ratio) stated.
2 M6 The candidate’s map is not very accurate, but does show areas of higher population density and annotates some reasons (some are weak however). The paragraph focuses on the distribution of the population identifying the peripheral coastal pattern and explaining why New Zealand has this distribution pattern. The candidate also identifies employment and the location of fertile agricultural land as factors that explain the distribution pattern.
3 M5 The candidate’s migration model headings are correctly identified. The candidate attempts to relate the model to New Zealand migration patterns and uses case study material. Some of their statements, such as about the South Island’s climate are rather overstated, but overall they attempt to explain how migration occurs.
