LOS ANGELES (AP) —A holiday present for Fidoor Fluffy used to be an extratable scrap or a new squeezetoy. But as with gifts fortheir human counterparts, pet presents are becomingincreasingly high-tech.

Like presents for youngchildren who lack the dex-terity to enjoy their newplaythings, pet gifts are usu-ally for the human whoowns the pet. Allie Robinoof Austin, Texas, bought adog treat maker for her 8-year-old rescue mutt Bent-ley, but it’ll be her bakingthe biscuits — not Bentley.

She bought PetSmart’sSunbeam Holiday Dog TreatMaker, essentially a waffle-maker with dog-bonemolds, for Bentley when shetook him to see Santa Clausat a Fort Worth pet store.Even though he and her oth-er dog, Shiner, will be theprimary beneficiaries of thepurchase, it’s mostly a giftfor Robino, who admits tohaving problems makingthings at home from scratch.

“A lot of these kinds ofthings end up being morecomplicated than the com-pany promises, but this wassuper easy to use and thefinished product looked

great. Believe me, if it werepossible to mess up, I wouldhave messed up. I’m battingzero on Pinterest,” she said, referring to the photo-shar-ing website beloved by am-ateur chefs and DIY-crafters.

Robino said it was the on-ly time she has bought a giftfor a pet that requires elec-tricity, figuring that wouldput Bentley in a rarefiedgroup of animals with high-tech presents. But there areactually plenty of gadgets instores for animals, from thepredictable (dog barkingcontrol, electronic self-cleaning cat litter boxes) tothe surprising (exerciseequipment, air conditionersfor doghouses, pet air puri-fiers for human houses).

Technology is having animpact in every area of thepet world, including food, toys and care products, saidBob Vetere, president of theAmerican Pet Products As-sociation. He believeshealth care advances aremoving the fastest.

“There are many ad-vances on the pet rehabilita-tion side of health care thatweren’t even heard of a fewyears ago. There are alsonew advances in medica-

tion, treatments, and eventesting and diagnostic areas. For example, you can sendoff your pet’s DNA to find

out their breed and evengive at-home tests to deter-mine if certain diseases arepresent,” he said.

Rehab equipment forpets, such as a dog-sizetreadmill, are no longer justfor veterinarian clinics. Petowners can buy the DogPac-er’s Minipacer treadmill($479), which is made fordogs under 55 pounds. Theoriginal DogPacer treadmillwill accommodate dogs upto 179 pounds and sells for$499 — about the sameprice as human-size gymequipment.

For owners who exercisewith their pets, the SharperImage Pet-O-Meter Pet Pe-dometer ($19.99) countssteps, calculates distanceand tracks the calorie intakeof the human partner.

Meanwhile, the prolifera-tion of apps for mobile de-vices offers clutter-free op-tions for urban pet ownerswith little living space.

There are apps that trackpets’ whereabouts, like theGPS-based monthly serviceTagg Pet Tracker, which canalert owners if a dog leavesa designated area or monitora pet’s physical activity. Fora simpler option, PetHubdog tags and collars makeowners’ contact informationaccessible through a scan-ning app on a mobile device, and animal shelter and GPS

tracking services can beadded.

Vetere believes the besthigh-tech pet product is themicrochip, which can be im-planted in dogs, cats, birds, horses and other animalsand will help reunite ownerswith lost pets.

“They are also widelyused by industry profession-als to track vaccinations, test results and otherrecords. With GPS mi-crochips now available aswell, your missing pet cannot only be tracked back toyou, but you can now trackthem down and prove own-ership if need be,” he said.

Vetere predicts hot high-tech gifts this year will bemicrochip pet doors, whichopen using a chip implantedin the animal. He said themost popular products willalways be those that makelife easier for pet owners —“like automatic feeders andwater delivery systems, au-tomatic litter boxes, groom-ing tools that comb and alsovacuum up the pet hair.”

On Vetere’s personalwishlist is “an automaticyard cleaner that would pickup after my dog, but I don’tsee how that would workwithout a robot,” he said.

Holiday gifts for pets following high-tech trend

This image provided by PetHub shows a PetHub dogtag. If your dog gets lost, anyone can scan this tag ona cell phone using a QR (quick response) scanningapp and immediately get access to the dog owner'sname, address and phone number. Or if you don't havea phone, you can call a 24/7 number and report thefound dog. A holiday present for Fido or Fluffy used tobe an extra table scrap or a new squeeze toy.
