And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone "like a son of man," dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. 19 "Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. Revelation 1:9-20 9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea."

Revelation 3:14-22 14 "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

The CITY of LAODICEA ►Laodicea, founded around 260 BC, lay at the crossroads of an important trade route, making it very busy and economically prosperous. ►The population at Laodicea was comprised of a variety of ethnicities, including a large constituency of Jews. ►A unique historical detail sets the tone for Jesus' address to Laodicea as the "lukewarm" church. ►Laodicea was known for its unique water supply system: an aqueduct piped water into the city from six miles away. ►By the time the water reached the city, it was nauseatingly lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, and was very distasteful for drinking. ►By contrast, Laodicea's neighboring cities were known for their desirable water supplies. ►Colosse, eleven miles to the southeast of Laodicea, had a fresh water stream running through the city providing cold drinking water. ►Hierapolis, six miles to the north, was built into a rocky mountainside with terraced limestone pools pouring out therapeutic hot springs. ►Laodicea's neighbors had desirable waters, while Laodicea itself had detestable water, stale and stagnant and sickening.

The CHURCH at LAODICEA ►The church at Laodicea was most likely founded as a result of the Apostle Paul's ministry at Ephesus in 52-55 AD (Acts 19:10). ►One of Paul's missionary partners, Epaphras, had likely planted the churches at Colosse, Laodicea, and Hierapolis (Colossians 1:7; 4:12-13). ►The Apostle Paul himself had written a letter to the church at Laodicea around 60-62 AD (Colossians 4:16), but that letter has been lost. ►By the time John writes Revelation in 95 AD, the church at Laodicea was about 40 years old.
