What is a tagline?A tagline is a catchphrase or slogan that gives an essence of

what the film is about. They intrigue the audience and hopefully

get them to watch the film.

They shouldn’t reveal character or story but they should be

memorable and are designed to generate an emotional response.

“Reality Is A Thing Of The Past” (The Matrix)

“Some Guys Just Can’t Handle Vegas”  (The Hangover)

First, I decided to try and come up with something on my

own, the above image is what I came up with.

If we had included a time machine in our story, we could

have used a tagline like “The Love Machine”.

However, I didn’t feel like any of them really fit perfectly, so

I decided to look at some existing taglines.

Taglines are usually either clever,

making a pun (‘Great Trilogies

come in threes’), inspirational

(‘Fear can hold us prisoner. Hope

can set us free’), or indicate that

something has gone wrong

(‘Houston, we have a problem’).

The tagline also says something

about the film genre. For example

the tagline “Be afraid…Be very

afraid.” belongs to the film ‘The

Fly’, which is a horror film.

e ‘Letter For Tom’ isn’t a comedy so I

don’t think a clever, funny tagline

would be appropriate. It doesn’t

contain a hidden message and can’t

be interpreted to have a moral

meaning so an inspirational tagline

would be impossible to create. So we

need to focus on romance film taglines

because that is the dominant genre in

our film. We could also include a sci-fi

element to the tagline.
