What is Desertification?

Desertification is the spread of desert like conditions in an area. It is currently happening in the Sahel region of Africa.

The causes of desertification are deforestation, overfarming of the land, overgrazing of the land, and drought. The effects of desertification include barren land that nothing can grow on and uninhabitable land for people and animals. Crops die and People suffer!

2. What countries does the Nile River serve and why is its delta important?

The Nile flows North through Sudan and

Egypt. It allows the Sudanese to be able to

irrigate their crops. It goes through a delta

at the end of Egypt. This delta helps

agricultural production because it is a fertile

very area. It then empties into the

Mediterranean Sea. It is also the longest

river in the world.

3. Describe the Great Rift Valley.

Landform in East Africa formed by the

movement of tectonic plates. Stretches

from Syria to Mozambique. Largest Rift

Valley in the World.

4. Where is the area you will find oil in Africa?

West Africa-Nigeria-off the coast...drilling

pollutes the Niger river.

5. Why is the Suez Canal important?

Man made canal that connects the Red Sea

to the Mediterranean Sea. Allows for faster

route for shipping and international trade.

Area of barren desert land

8. Describe Deforestation.

Deforestation is clearing the land from

forests by cutting down trees. It is occurring

in central Africa in the tropical

rainforest(Congo Rainforest). It can cause

flash floods and soil erosion.

9. What problems has the Sahel Region of Africa faced?

Area located below the Sahara Desert.

Suffers from Desertification

Some land is used for grazing, but you

cannot farm on the land.

People are nomadic Herders in the regions

have to use chemical fertilizers to farm
