Work with your child to use the words above to write other compound words, such as raincoat, doghouse, toothpick, baseball, lighthouse, and eyelashes. (Other possibilities include rainstorm, birdbath, hairbrush, footprint, flashbulb, and eyelid.)

Home Activity Your child identified words in which the long i sound is spelled i, ie, igh, or y. Write the word endings -ind and -ild as headings on a sheet of paper. Have your child add beginning letters to each ending to form long i words.
Home Activity Your child wrote words that end in -er as in taller and -est as in tallest to make comparisons. Ask your child to draw pictures of groups of animals (two animals, four animals). Have your child write a sentence for each picture, using words such as longer/longest, heavier/heaviest, and tamer/tamest.
