• Launched– June 2010 & enhanced in July 2012– www.HealthyCommunitiesHealthyFuture.org– Lead Federal Agency: HHS; Lead Collaborating Partner:

National League of Cities

• 5 Goals– Based on the White House Task Force on Childhood

Obesity Report to the President– Align with the 5 Let’s Move! Pillars– Are achievable, measurable and promote sustainable

strategies– Leverage existing nation, state and local efforts

• Local elected officials are asked to commit to the 5 Goals

• Focus: engage and educate local elected officials on the problem of childhood obesity and actions they can take to address childhood obesity

• Five goals developed to better unify activities of cities, towns and counties doing this work

• Encourage collaborations

Goal I: Start Early, Start Smart

To provide children with a healthier start, local elected officials commit to helping early care and education providers incorporate best practices for nutrition, physical activity and screen time into their programs

Goal II: MyPlate, My Place

To empower parents and caregivers, local elected officials commit to prominently displaying MyPlate in all municipally- or county-owned or operated venues where food is served.

Goal III: Smart Servings for Students

To provide healthy food in schools, local elected officials commit to increasing participation in the School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program.

Goal IV: Model Food ServiceTo improve access to healthy, affordable foods, local

elected officials commit to implementing healthy and sustainable food service guidelines that are aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in all municipally- or county-owned and operated venues that serve food.

Goal V: Active Kids at Play

To increase physical activity, local elected officials commit to mapping local playspaces, completing a needs assessment, developing an action plan, and implementing a minimum of three proven policies, programs or initiatives aimed at increasing access to play.

– Medals are awarded monthly by NLC– Local elected officials receive certificates to

display in city hall or wherever they choose– Provide news release template– Use – The website reflects medals awarded

Earn a gold, silver, and bronze medal for each goal

Goal V: Active Kids at Play – to increase physical activity, local elected officials commit to mapping local playspaces, completing a needs assessment, developing an action plan, and launching a minimum of three proven policies, programs or initiatives aimed at increasing access to play.• Gold: All playspaces are mapped, a needs assessment is completed, an action plan is

developed, and a minimum of three proven policies, programs or initiatives from the action plan are launched and continue to increase access to play.

• Silver: All playspaces are mapped, a needs assessment is completed, an action plan is developed.

• Bronze: All playspaces are mapped.

Medal Awarding Continued• Initial medal announcement by NLC was

November 2012– Awarded 548 medals– Recognized 12 local

elected officials who had the highest medal achievements

• To date, over 1,500 medals have been awarded by NLC

in support of the 5 goals

• Once a local elected official signs up on www.HealthyCommunitiesHealthyFuture.org they will receive their city,- town-, or county-specific survey via email

• The survey is a link that can be accessed at any time to update information

• The survey answers are used by NLC to award the medals, as well as develop appropriate technical assistance based on needs

Take Action: Form a childhood obesity task force

• Engage a range of city agencies, community based organizations, faith-based organizations academic partners, etc. in efforts

• Assess the work already being done• Determine what priorities you have in the city• Identify areas you are in need of technical

assistance
