A basement can offer homeowners more than just utilitarian purposes, such as storage and laundry space. A finished basement will not only increase the value of your home, but it can also improve your home’s living space adding to your quality of life. Whether you’re finishing your basement or simply renovating it, one of the best features is the ability to design it exactly how you want it.
When planning your basement flooring, there are several pre-installation requirements that should be fulfilled in order to lengthen the life of your floor while reducing the coldness associated with basements.
Firstly, because dampness can enter a basement from the ground below, moisture barriers are often installed beneath the slab during construction. Alternatively, older homes may not have this barrier, so polyethylene can be applied on top of the unfinished existing floor. The next step is the installation of a subfloor. When it comes to installing a subfloor, there are kinds available that include moisture barriers eliminating the need for the first step. If cold is a great concern, underfloor heating can be installed on top of the subfloor to keep your basement nice and warm during the winter.
When broken down into five steps, finishing a basement no longer seems like a daunting task.

Five Steps to a Finished Basement:
Step 1: Get off to a good start by flawlessly completing your framing and subflooring.
Step 3: Get necessary power by wiring your basement for electricity.
Step 2: Perfect your plumbing with the installation of pipes and drains.
Step 4: Finish your basement construction by installing insulation and drywall.
Step 5: Finally, add the finishing touches to your basement with moulding, paint, flooring and more!

Electrical is one area of renovations that requires extreme caution and care. If you are uncertain about any aspect of electrical work, consult
with a local professional before proceeding.
If you’re doing a renovation on an older home, keep in mind electrical wiring done in the past wasn’t designed for modern life.
Potential areas for improvement include updating aluminum wiring, installing additional outlets, or substituting an over-wired panel.

Give your corners a professional, crisp look with corner bead. Used in the corners of walls during drywall construction, this bead not only makes corners look cleaner, but it also gives corners extra durability to protect against damage. Corner bead is constructed from both plastic and metal, and each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. Metal corner bead is extremely tough and strong, but unfortunately it can rust and bleed right through the paint. Plastic corner bead is not as durable as metal, but this means it’s easier to work with and apply.
Easy to install and budget friendly, recessed and track lighting are terrific choices for illuminating your basement. For those who have no available spot to install recessed lighting, track lighting is extremely flexible and allows for lights to shine from various angles. Recessed lighting, on the other hand, can highlight a focal point while providing additional light to a room.

Ceiling tile systems remain a popular choice for homeowners because they can provide a clean, finished look for basements. Despite their simplicity, these tiles provide various benefits to your basement depending on the type selected. Some ceiling tiles offer superior sound control while others are resistant to sagging and scuffing. There are even some models that can be set up without the hassle of a grid system for additional convenience.

Moulding is great for providing a formal, sophisticated look and feel while creating visual interest for your room. There are various types of moulding available to suit different tastes and purposes. Chair rails protect your walls from dings and scrapes and can provide a formal accent for any space. Crown moulding covers cracks or messy paint edges where the wall meets the ceiling to give your décor an elegant look. Use baseboards along any joint where wall and flooring meet to give your room a clean, finished look. Decorative moulding and trim can provide a more formal feel and the perfect finishing accent for any space. Since there are limitless decorating possibilities, why not mix and match the multiple types to express your personal style with moulding.
Invest in the essentials by selecting doors to complement and complete the look of your basement. The main possibilities for interior basements include prehung or slab doors. Prehung doors are fully self-contained and hang inside their own frame for easier installation. Unlike prehung doors, a slab door does not usually have pre-drilled holes for the lock set or hinges, nor are they already mounted in a frame. This means more preparation work before hanging, but it can also mean more flexibility in the final appearance of the door.

PAINTFrom minor to major basement renovations, painting is a popular task for a variety of reasons. Novice DIYers can paint without encountering major difficulties, plus paint is easier to clean than other wall treatments and is simple to replace should you want a change in décor.
Without a doubt, the biggest part of the paint job is preparation. Washing and sanding walls may seem unnecessary, but marks, dirt, or irregularities on your walls can at show through the
final result or even keep new paint from adhering properly to your walls. The bottom line? Anything you do (or don’t do) in the preparation stage is going to show up in the end, and a
little extra effort early-on will ensure that your hard work doesn’t go to waste. Click here for our Project File: Paint Like a Pro! for more information.

FLOORINGSince you are installing flooring in an area which tends towards the damp side, you need to choose a floor which is moisture resistant. This will prevent problems like warped, uneven floors and water stains.
Some of the most popular flooring options for basements include: carpet, ceramic tile, laminate, and vinyl. Generally, carpets have insulating properties that come back as winter energy savings if you like to keep your home warm during the colder months. Although ceramic tile can be quite cold to walk on, it is durable and easy to clean. Laminate is a durable, mid-price flooring solution that gives you the look of hardwood without the expense and maintenance. Lastly, vinyl flooring is water resistant which makes it an ideal choice for damp basements.

If a disaster strikes, would your family be prepared? The Red Cross encourages all Canadians to be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for at least 72 hours in a disaster, and 1 to 2 weeks in a health emergency. Discuss this checklist with your family, and then create an emergency plan. For more information on emergency preparedness visit redcross.ca.

When a disaster strikes, basements are most susceptible to damage. One of the most common emergencies that affects basements is flooding. If flooding occurs, not only will your basement be damaged, but valuables may be lost and cleanup can be costly.
Homeowners may not be able to prevent a flood, but steps can be taken to reduce damage and simplify cleanup. Sump pumps are a terrific choice, but they must be installed before an emergency occurs. When shopping for a sump pump, choose one that can be operated by battery incase electricity is lost. Additionally, if a flood is eminent, it’s best to turn off the electricity while the area is still accessible. Prepare yourself for the worst with the following handy items:
