Student Name C. Palmer Art Assignment 2 The drawing of “Let Us Pray” By Thomas Nast and made in wood engraving. Thomas was an American cartoonist born in Germany September 27, 1840. The piece I chose expressed political satire based downfall of Boss Tweed. As a young child, Thomas has a passion for drawing followed him into academic art school such as National Academy of Design to further his skills. The Dark shading surrounding the four vultures captured my attention in from his overall drawings. The intense value in the gives the piece a mysterious feel following the empty pale faces of the vultures especially in Boss Tweed’s face make that effect he used repetition of the lines to create rough and dark texture. I also like the direction of the lightning bolt heading below the cliffs to distract the viewer towards the skulls and corpse that lie beneath the four vultures. However, the it lacks color, which I believe is important in order to present a main focus and to make the drawing more stable. Thomas Nast used heavy

symbolizedanger.ThefocusofthepaintingistheBuccaneerstrikingwell

compositedposetoappealtheviewer.Thelightingismainlyfocusedonthepirate

andthedarknessisputmoreontheleftsidewhereanothermanlay’sinsidethe

camptocreateanillusionofspace.Although,thedelineationofthecharacter’sface

seemshaveanunbalancedtexturecomparedtothecrispdetailifhisoutfit.Now,

piratedmovieslikethePiratesoftheCaribbeanstarringJohnnyDeppusesimilar

costumesfromhisPiratebookillustrations.
