Prehistoric Colonization of North America

When: the Americas were colonized at least 12,000 to 15,000 years ago

Evidence is abundant that the land was settled from at least that long ago

How: by migrating from Eurasia over the Bering Strait land mass by footOr by travelling by boat along the coastline.

Prehistoric Colonization of North America

Prehistory is human history that predates writing

Most North American natives did not have written languages

The most recent prehistoric cultures that inhabited North America lived in 1800s California

Prehistoric cultures relied on oral traditions to pass stories and information down through the generations

Most of what we know comes from archaeological finds and from the stories recorded by descendants and anthropologists

Native American Land Use

Page 13: Lessons from the American Indian Genocide

Native American Land Use

Agriculture was common, especially in southern latitudes

Agriculture was practiced by tossing seeds instead of planting in neat rows

Some tribes were settled & dependent on agriculture

Some tribes were nomadic & dependent onhunting & gathering

Indian seasonal land use practices made the land appear largely uninhabited to settlers who used land intensively

The European Colonization of the “New World”

“By our efforts, we have lit a fire as well -

a fire in the minds of men . . . it burns those who fight its progress, and one day

this untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world.”

George W. Bush, 2004 Inaugural Address

Page 22: Lessons from the American Indian Genocide

The European Colonization of the “New World”

“A fire in the minds of men," is from Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s nineteenth century book, The Possessed (or The Devils)

That a United States president would quote this phrase astonished many analysts

The Possessed is about violent government crackdown on dissent that sparks civil unrest and revolution

Fire in the Minds of Men is also the title of a famous book on the history of revolutions, including the origin of occult Freemasonry and its influence in the American Revolution.

Bush said, "When our Founders declared a new order of the ages… they were acting on an ancient hope that is

meant to be fulfilled.”

Manifest DestinyU.S. Expansionism in the 1800s

It was a popular idea, rather than government policy

Manifest Destiny declared the dominance of the Anglo-Saxon race

Journalist John L. O'Sullivan coined the term, Manifest Destiny, in an article in 1839 where he stated:

“Manifest Destiny", did predict a "divine destiny" for the United States based upon values such as equality, rights of conscience, and personal enfranchisement-- "to establish on earth the moral dignity and salvation of man."

Page 26: Lessons from the American Indian Genocide

Manifest DestinyU.S. Expansionism in the 1800s

Spreading liberty and democracy sounds great

In reality, Manifest Destiny did not recognize the sovereign right of American Indians to self-governance

Manifest Destiny was a mass, cultural superiority complex

It was used to rationalize:

wholesale cultural destruction

imperialism

genocide

Manifest DestinyU.S. Expansionism in the 1800s

The building of the 1st transcontinental railroad accelerated the displacement of natives

War and GenocideThe Cherokee Trail of Tears

President Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Program affected 5 nation tribes including the Cherokee

The Cherokee had already assimilated to European culture in the hope of avoiding removal

From 1831 to 1837 all tribes were removed, clearing 25 million acres for Anglo-Saxon settlement

Page 31: Lessons from the American Indian Genocide

War and GenocideThe Cherokee Trail of Tears

The Cherokees were rounded up into concentration camps before being removed by force

Their homes were burned, and property destroyed or plundered

Page 37: Lessons from the American Indian Genocide

Lessons for Modern TimesPalestinian Loss of Land – 1946 to 2000

Israel has systematically undermined Palestinian interests from the beginning

The broken treaties, illegal colonization, and subsequent loss of land is a story that mirrors the American Indians’ tragic fate

The ragged, subdivided remains of Palestine resembles an urban concentration camp; basic services are diminishing by the day

The United States subsidizes Israel through annual multibillion dollar “gifts”

Lessons for Modern TimesDepleted Uranium Munitions

The United States has left 1000s of tons of depleted uranium on battlefields

Page 47: Lessons from the American Indian Genocide

A 2005 epidemiology review in the academic journal, Environmental Health, concluded: "In aggregate the human epidemiological evidence is consistent with increased risk of birth defects in offspring of persons exposed to Depleted Uranium.”

The aerosol created during impact of depleted uranium munitions can contaminate large areas

The uranium aerosols can be inhaled by both civilians and soldiers

a UN working paper was delivered in 2002[36] by Y.K.J. Yeung Sik Yuen in accordance with Human Rights Resolution 2001/36.

Yuen’s paper argues that the use of DU in weapons may breach:

the Universal Declaration of Human Rightsthe Charter of the United Nationsthe Genocide Convention, the United Nations Convention Against Torturethe Geneva Conventions including Protocol Ithe Convention on Conventional Weapons of 1980tthe Chemical Weapons Convention

The U.S. chaired UN Security Council consistently rejects the call for a ban

Lessons for Modern TimesConcluding Thoughts

We must recognize our connection to past injustices

Use critical thinking - do not just follow the crowd

We can never progress as a civil society without:

Respecting history and our connections to it

Respecting the sovereign rights of all living beings

Knowing the difference between right and wrong, and acting with humility and compassion
