HAVE ACELEBRITYQUESTION?
Q I haven’t seen anything about TinaTurner lately. What is she doing?
Sherry Everly, Louisville
At 72, the rock ’n’ roll queen still ap-pears at fashion events and concerts allover the world, and a musical in Lon-don’s West End, Soul Sister, is inspiredby her legacy. She continues to makemusic, too, but in a different way: Tur-ner, who became a Buddhist in the1960s, has released Children Beyond, arecording of her singing prayers andmantras of several religions with 30children of different cultures.
QMatt Damon has starred as JasonBourne in the last three Bourne
movies. Why isn’t he in the new one?Anna Wright, Newfield, N.J.
Everyone’s lookingfor new thrills. Da-mon, who starred asBourne in the 2002,2004 and 2007 films, hasn’t ruled out play-ing the CIA-trainedassassin again oneday, but he’s gettinghis action-moviequota in NeillBlomkamp’s next
sci-fi film, Elysium (due in March2013), which co-stars fellow Oscarwinner Jodie Foster. The Bournefranchise gets rebooted by actor Jer-emy Renner and director TonyGilroy with a fourthmovie, The BourneLegacy, in theatersthis weekend.
Q I told my wife that Johnny Deppand Peter DeLuise, original cast
members of TV’s 21 Jump Street, hadcameos in the film 21 Jump Street.
A steak dinner rides on this. Please confirm I am right!
Jonathan Cook, Sherman, Texas
We hope you get your choiceof filet or porterhouse —you are definitely correct. As Tom Hanson and DougPenhall, Depp and DeLuise
starred in the original 1987-91Fox drama as young cops
working undercoverin high schools
and colleges. Twodecades later, they played DEAagents in the 2012movie starringChanning Ta-tum and JonahHill. Theyweren’t the only
old-timers in themovie — Holly
Robinson Peete, whosang the 21 Jump StreetTV theme song, reprisedher police role as JudyHoffs in the film.

2Check that yourchild is readingat grade level. Each fall and spring, check to see whether
your child is scoring at “profi-ciency” or above on statewidetests. (Jargon alert: You’ll wantthe ELA test score, whichstands for English LanguageArts and is edu-speak for read-ing and writing.) A telltale signof a reading problem? Home-work requiring reading alwaysgets left undone. If you suspect— or are told — that your childis behind, you need to act now.Ask the teacher: What skillsdoes my child need to master toget to grade level? And whatkind of instruction can you pro-vide that is different from lastyear to help him or her catchup? Not satisfied? Meet with thereading specialist and the prin-cipal. (Target grades: 1-8)
1Make contact with teachersby Week 3.This is easy to do in kindergarten, harder inmiddle and high school when students rolltheir eyes at the mention of parents. Still, doyourself, your child and your child’s teachers afavor and get each teacher’s cellphone number
and e-mail address. Give them yours. The goal is to openup the lines of communication between the most influen-tial adults in your child’s life. Standard topics: checkingin, praise and concerns. If you are talking regularly anda problem arises, teachers won’t hesitate to call you, oryou them. Persistent worries? Contact the teacher be-fore a school administrator. (Target grades: K-12)
3Understand the importance of downtime. It may seem counterintuitive, but recess, a lunch breakand small breaks during the day improve learning. To beat their cognitive peak, elementary school kids need 20minutes of downtime a day. Yet the journal Pediatrics
reported in 2009 that 30% of 8- and 9-year-olds were getting little orno recess. Though there’s no set “dose” for older kids, research hasshown that adolescents who do regular cardiovascular activity dobetter in school and get better jobs as adults. (Target grades: K-12)
4Analyzetest scores.High-stakestest scores mat-ter. But just be-
cause scores went up lastyear doesn’t mean aschool is great. Long-term improvements arekey. Top schools get goodscores by helping kidsunderstand, analyze andwrite about complex sub-jects. So-so schools userelentless test prep. Iftest prep dominates thecurriculum, seek a meet-ing with the principal.(Target grades: 3-12)
5Stay on trackfor college.High schools need toprepare students forcollege. Know this:
Most colleges want your child tohave taken four years of Eng-lish, math, a laboratory science, history and some foreign lan-guage in high school. So start-ing in middle school, course se-quence becomes important. En-sure that children are on trackto take algebra by ninth gradeso they will be on the path to docollege-level math. Generalrule: Students should take themost rigorous courses they canhandle. (Target grades: 7-12)
6Don’t trash-talkabout math.Psychologists HaroldStevenson and JamesStigler found 15 years
ago that in countries that pro-duce a lot of math whizzes, par-ents and teachers believed thatmath ability is like a muscle youstrengthen with good instruc-tion and practice. In the USA,where kids don’t do that well, parents think of math ability asa talent, not a skill. Do this:Check that nightly homework iscompleted (not on the bus). Andwatch what you say about yourown math aptitude — it matters.(Target grades: K-12)
7Be part of the learning community.Make a commitment to attend twice-a-year school meet-ings. If you can, volunteer in the library or as a classparent and attend the school play. (Dads, this means you, too!) It can be hard to be a steady, reasonable advocate
— especially if your own memories of school are mixed. But yourchild is counting on you. Get ready. (Target grades: K-12) 6
Homeworkfor parentsKids who thrive inschool have parentswho support learningat home. Here’s whatyou can do:
Make it clear that itis important to yourfamily that effort isput into doing wellin school. Goodgrades are welcome, but hard work is justas valued.
Track progress andask questions. Not: Howwas school? (Answer:Fine.) Rather: What didyou study in sciencetoday? (Answer: a con-versation about whatthey’re learning.)
Provide quiet, in-terruption-free space forkids to do homework.Elementary-schoolerscan work supervised atthe kitchen table; mid-dle-schoolers can experi-ment working solo.
Multitasking iscode for not payingattention. If childrenare doing homeworkon a computer, insistthat they are loggedout of Facebook andPandora is turned off.
Keep plenty ofreading material inthe house, andmake sure yourchildren see youreading for workand pleasure.

LIKE AN OLD FRIEND
who surprises you with ahidden talent, it
turns out that macaroniand cheese can help sat-isfy appetites and enableus to get more nutrients — with-out anyone ever realizing it.
A recent study published inthe AmericanJournal of Clin-ical Nutritionreported thatsubjects who hadvegetable pureessecretly incorpo-rated into their
meals consumed up to 350 fewercalories and two more vegetableservings daily than those whodidn’t. More important: Theywere equally satisfied with theamount they ate and the taste ofthe meals.
Don’t believe it? The proof isin the glorious macaroni andcheese here, where pureed win-ter squash (thawed from frozen)lends the cheesy bake a creamytexture and essential nutrientslike vitamin A and fiber. Theflavor blends so seamlessly thatno one will ever know you’veadded the extra vegetable.
The result: a comfort foodyou’ll want to serve to your lovedones again and again.

IT’S BEEN A BIG YEAR for the only childof Elvis Presley, who will take part inevents in Memphis this week to mark
the 35th anniversary of her father’s death.
Lisa Marie, 44, who moved to England in2010, toured for her third album, Storm &Grace, which explores her Southern roots.Meanwhile, her special Graceland exhibit,Elvis: Through His Daughter’s Eyes, acollection of her playthings and familymementos, is to be open for two years.
We asked this mother of four (ages 3to 23) to share 10 things we never knew.
She feared dying at 42, as her dad did: “I honestlywas nervous. I quit smoking five years before, trying tokill the odds. My mom’s side of the family lives forever. But on my father’s side, everyone had trouble and wentearlier. I really didn’t know where I was going to fall.”How she reconciles Elvis Week exuberance with
the anniversary’s somberness: “I put on my respon-sible heiress hat and try not to think about anythingelse. I can separate it. I was trained to do that young.”Hobby: “I love to color with coloring books with
crayons. I find it therapeutic.”Her childhood after her
parents divorced: “In Mem-phis, my father let me run wild.I’d be up all hours of the nightand eat french fries and choco-late cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then I’d gohome to Beverly Hills to a very regimented mother andhave a normal schedule. It was very confusing.”Best thing about motherhood: “Everything. It’s
the most gratifying thing I’ve ever done. But it’s alsoso painful. There’s so much love there that you justworry yourself to death.”Best thing about the South: “There’s more music
heart and soul there than I’ve ever felt anywhere else. But everything is fried. Even a salad could be fried.”Best thing about living in rural England: “Its
simplicity. The sheep getting born. Getting snowed in.”Graceland is still home: “I go three or four times a
year and turn it back into a private residence. We havedinners and do things there still as a family.”Best secret talent: “Mimicking foreign accents.”What she sees in a mirror: “Flaws. I don’t want to
get shots of rat poison in my face, so I’m a little nervous. But, hey, if those smile lines get out of control . . . ” 6
She’s her daddy’s daughterAs Elvis Week begins, check out10 surprises about his only child,Lisa Marie Presley.

Loose SaggyNeck Skin –CanAnyCreamCureTurkeyNeck?DEAR DORRIS: I’m a woman who is 64 yearsyoung who suffers from really loose skin undermy chin and on my lower neck. I hate the term, but my grandkids say I have “turkey neck” andfrankly, I’ve had enough of it!
I have tried some creams designed to help tighten and firm that loose, saggy skin, butthey did not work. Is there any cream out there that can truly help my loose neck skin?

DEAR TURKEY-NECK: In fact, there is a very potent cream on the market thatfirms, tightens and regenerates new skin cells on the neck area. It is called theDermagist Neck Restoration Cream®. This cream contains an instant lift ingredientthat tightens the skin naturally, as well as deep moisturizing ingredients to firm the skinand make it more supple. Amazingly, the Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream® alsohas Stem Cells taken from Malus Domesticus, a special apple from Switzerland.
These stem cells are actually unprogrammed cells that can mimic those of young skinthat stays tight, firm and wrinkle free. As an alternative to the scary surgeries or facelifts that many people resort to, this cream really packs a big punch on the loose saggyskin of the neck.
The Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream® is available online at Dermagist.com oryou can order or learn more by calling toll-free, 888-771-5355. Oh, I almost forgot… Iwas given a promo code when I placed my order that gave me 11% off. The code was“REG5N9”. It’s worth a try to see if it still work.

QMy newly adopted dog isbeginning to understand
house training. Now, how doI get him to signal me with“woof” when he’s gotta go out?
—A.L., Denver
Some dogs are natural-borntalk-show hosts, while othersare quieter. For dogs that oftenexpress themselves, there’s a
training tech-nique that offersa good chance forsuccess.
It’s simple:When your dogbarks for what-ever reason at an
appropriate bathroom-breaktime of day, say “good” and lethim out. Eventually, he’ll knowto bark when he needs to go.(Obviously, don’t reward a dogfor barking at 3 a.m. by lettinghim out then — unless you wanta dog who wakes you in themiddle of the night.)
Interestingly, your dog ulti-mately will develop a specifickind of “Mom, I’ve gotta go pot-ty” bark that will be differentfrom his other barks. 6

By Ralph Burns;“Former”acid reflux sufferer
Here’s My Story: I’ve SufferedWith Acid Reflux for Almost 40 YearsNow. Unless you experience it; youcan’t imagine how horrible it is. Everytime I ate spicy foods I would get whatI called “ROT GUT”. Like something wasrotting in my stomach. But now I caneat anything... No matter how spicy.Even if I never could before.
Let me explain… For the betterpart of my life; I purposely avoideda lot of foods. Especially ones witheven a tiny bit of seasoning. Becauseif I didn’t, I’d experience a burningsensation through my esophagus—like somebody poured hot lead orbattery acid down my throat. Add tothat, those disgusting“mini-throw ups”and I was in “indigestion hell”.
Doctors put me on all sorts ofantacid remedies. But nothingworked.Or if they did, it would only be fora brief period. And then boom! Mynightmare would return.
Sometimes, I felt like I was dying. The pain was unbearable and nothingcould make it stop.
But then my wife, who occasionallysuffered with the same problem; gavemeoneof her prescription acidblockers. It was a miracle. I felt like I could liveagain. Because before that, I was justmiserable. I wanted to kill myself. Butthankfully, it worked, andworkedwell.
I felt great, until about one yearago; when I read an FDA warning thatscared the heck out of me. It wentsomething like this…
FDA WARNING! Using protonpump inhibitors (PPIs) on a longterm basis, increases your risk ofhip, bone and spinal fractures.
That’s a particular concern tome, sincemany acid blockers are PPI’s. I’ve gonethrough two back surgeries and bilat-eral hip replacements. I had to askmyself, could PPI’s have been responsible for mymedicalwoes? After all...
I was “between a rock and a hardplace”. Stop using the PPI’s and I’m a“dead man in the water”. It would beunbearable. I wouldn’t be able to eatanything. I’d have to go on awater diet.
But that FDA warning was scary. Iknew I had to stopor else risk developingspinal stenosis. My mother had that. And I watched her die a horrible death. Her spine just fractured. It was the worstdeath. She didn’t deserve that. Andneither do I.
I had to quit. So I stopped takingPPI’s for a day or so. But my indigestionwas worse than ever. I would rather takethechanceof a spinal fracture than to livelike that again. I tried everything. Evenstarted using home remedies like Applecider vinegar. But it just felt like I waspouring evenmore aciddownmy throat.
Then one day at dinner, a friend ofmine said “why don’t you try an aloedrink?” I said “aloe drink”? Jeez. Thatdoesn’t sound good at all!” The nextday he brought me a case of somethingcalled AloeCure®. I was skeptical, but Iwas desperate! So instead of being aningrate I decided to try it.
I was shocked!AloeCure® tastedpret-ty good too. It has a pleasant grape flavorthat I actually enjoy drinking. I decided to
experiment. I stopped taking the PPI’s al-together and replaced it with a daily dietof AloeCure®. Then something remark-able happened… NOTHING! Not eventhe slightest hint of indigestion.
And here’s the best part. The nextday we had Italian food — my worstenemy. But for the first time in 40 yearsI didn’t get indigestion without relyingon prescription or OTC pills and tablets. Finally, I just didn’t need themanymore!
I was so thrilled; I wrote theAloeCure® company to tell them howamazing their product is. They thankedme, and askedme to tell my story... Thestory that changed my life. I said “Sure, but only if you send me a hefty supplyof AloeCure®. I just can’t live without it.”
But don’t believe me. You have totry this stuff for yourself. I recommendAloeCure® to anyone who suffers withthe same problem I did. It gives youimmediate relief. You’ll be grateful youdid. I sure am. It’s the best thing that’shappened tome in a long, long time.

Keep working out. You increased yourphysical activity to lose the weight; to maintainyour new look, successful dieters say you haveto stay the course. According to the National
Weight Control Registry, which tracks the habits ofmore than 5,000 people whohave lost and kept offweight, 90% of those sur-veyed report exercising anabout an hour a day. Breakit up if you need to: Take20-minute brisk walks inthe morning, afternoon and
evening — the effect is the same.Track your weight and daily food intake.
It may seem tedious, but it can help monitoryour progress and spot potential pitfalls. Stepon the scale about once a week (morning is thebest time) and log your numbers. If the pounds
creep back on, check yourfood journal. It can helpidentify patterns and habitsderailing your success. Thenyou can make changes —like packing healthy foodsfor your road trip, or takinga quick lap around the officeon a break.
Remember why you want to stay slim. You look better, you feel healthier and incontrol, you have more energy, or you can fitinto your favorite dress: Whatever the reason, taking a minute to remind yourself every daywhy it’s worth the effort is a tactic that can help
you keep the weight off, ac-cording to a survey of morethan 1,100 people who main-tained weight loss.Enlist the help of family
and friends. Support fromloved ones is key to keepingyou motivated. Be specificabout what you need to stayon track — brainstorm
healthy menus or recipes, invite them to anexercise class or along for a walk, even ask thatthey don’t offer you your trigger foods. 6

IF IT’S NOT HARD enough to lose weight, keep-ing it off can be even tougher. By some esti-mates, up to two-thirds of dieters regain more
weight than they lost within four or five years. Tobeat those odds, and keep the scale steady, trythese science-backed strategies:
Stick to a low-GI diet. When compared withlow-carb and low-fat eating plans, a low-glycem-ic-index (GI) diet may give you the best chance
of keeping weight off in a healthy way, sug-gests preliminary research published in the
Journal of the American Medical Asso-ciation. Scientists looked at the three
diets and found that while the low-carb plan helped burn the most
calories, it also appeared toraise risk factors for heart
disease. Participants onthe low-GI diet burned
more than 100 morecalories a day than
the low-fat group,without harmfulheart effects.
A low-GI planis similar toMediterranean-style diets,emphasizingfoods with
slow-digestingcarbohydrates, such as
beans and lentils, non-starchy vegetables (like broc-
coli), fruit and whole grains, aswell as lean proteins and
healthy fats like olive oil. WOMANIN
