Sorting objects based on mass Mighty Maddie Powerpoint with learning objectives and intentions Mystery Bags - filled with different objects Picture of a man hefting Structure/Activity Students find their sit spots and show their whole body listening. Recap from last week, that the measurement concept we looked at was length which is how long or short something is, when measuring objects to find out the length we used our eyes and unifix cubes. Tell students that we will be learning about how to measure objects in a new way. This week we are going to measure objects using mass. This means we are going to find out how heavy or light an object is. Read 'Mighty Maddie', then discuss some of the different words the book used for mass. Instruct students that today we are going to looking at the form of measuring mass which is hefting, describe that heftinng is using our hands to heft and explore objects which are heavier and lighter. (show hefting man and provide example). Ask students to form a rectangle around the mat, instruct that we are going to use the new form of measuring mass hefting. (pull out mystery bags) - show explicitly first. choose students with their whole body listening to choose mystery bags. The student will then put one bag in each hand, then use hefting to determine which is heavier or lighter. Pass the bags around and see if all students agree. Then have a student place them in the heavier or lighter section of the mat. At the end of the lesson ask the students 'what is mass?' and 'what is hefting?'. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
