The Industrial Revolution

• Before the 1800s many things were produced by hand.

• Now that was starting to change thanks to machines.

• New sources of Power.

• Steam, replaced human and animal power

New Technology

• Since the middle ages workers had a spinning wheels that made thread, however, it could only spin 1 thread at a time.

• 1764 the Spinning Jenny, a machine that could spin several threads at once.

• The Loom to weave cloth in 1780 could produce more cloth in a day

1793 Samuel and Moses Brown

• Samuel found a struggling mill in the possession of Moses Brown

• Samuel set to work to fix the mill and gave it the upgrade

• First successful textile mill in the US that was powered by water.

Child Labor

• Boys and Girls as young as 7 work in factories.

• It was dangerous

• Many lost limbs in the machines

• Child labor is cruel

• 1800s Farms children worked hard too

• Often their wages went to helping the family

• The Talker – someone who talks to a crowd to promote their show. P.T. Barnum got his start promoting his own shows.

• The hardest part of this job is trying to get the people to pay.
