Introduction: Did you know baking is a science! To make sure cakes rise, eggs whip and cookies crumble it’s important that the right ingredients are added at the right time and in the correct quantities. Discussion: Explain to the class that measurement is finding a number that shows the size or amount of something. We can measure…. Length: how far from end to end the object is. This is also known as distance. Area: the size of a surface. Volume: the amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies. This is also known as capacity. Weight: (mass): how much an object or matter contains. Temperature: how hot or cold something is. Talk about: Talk to the class about measurements they already know such as their height, age or shoe size. Are there any others they can think of?

Activity: Discover Capacity

Let’s get hands on!

Ask the children to fi ll different containers with dry foods and then weigh the contents using the weighing scales. Can they discover which container holds the most food and which food is the heaviest or lightest? Could they have guessed this before weighing them or was this a surprise?

Talk to the children about the different weights they are fi nding and the units of measure they are looking at such as grams or ounces.

Now give the children some simple quantities to weigh out using their foods, can they weigh out 100g, 200g and 300g? For more able pupils give them some more complex weights to measure to.

Pre-school

Ask the children to stick items of the different foods onto a piece of paper and write down how much each piece weighs. They could also draw a picture of the container that holds the most food and the one that holds the least.

KS1 and KS2

Provide pupils with a copy of the chart template, so that they can record their results.

To extend and challenge pupils further you could also introduce the tare button on the digital scales or on non-digital scales add the container

to the scales before adding the food and bring the weigh back to 0. Explain how using this method will reveal the true weight of the foods not including the weight of the containers.

You will need:

• A selection of differently sized containers

• Weighing scales either digital or non-digital

• Dry foods (such as pasta, rice, chickpeas, lentils)

• Pen and paper

to the scales before adding the food and bring the weigh back to 0. Explain how using this method will reveal the true weight of the

Extend pupils learning by asking them to complete the following weight based maths questions:

• Lucy is baking cookies, and needs 100g of caster sugar and is using measuring spoons. Each spoon can hold 20g of sugar, how many spoons will make 100g?

• Vinoj needs 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and ½ teaspoon of salt. How many teaspoons does Vinoj need in total?

• Sarah has a bag of fl our that weighs 500g but only needs 225g for her cookies, how much fl our will Sarah have left in the bag?

• Adam is weighing out the ingredients for his cookies; 225g butter, 220g sugar, 200g fl our, 30g cocoa, 150g raisins and 250g porridge oats. What does Adam’s mixture weigh in total?
