Example 1:

Twice a number, increased by 5, equals -25.

Use n to represent the number.

2n + 5 = -25

In a canned food drive, Sam collected 12 more cans than Lisa. Together, they collected 128 cans. How many cans did Sam collect?Use c to represent cans Lisa collected.

c + 12 represents Sam

c + (c + 12) = 128

(c + c) + 12 = 128

2c + 12 = 128

c represents Lisa

2c = 116

c = 58

Lisa collected 58
