Primary Industries

• Industries that take raw materials from the natural environment

• They are called primary because the extraction of natural resources must happen first before anything else can occur

• These primary industries are located in parts of Canada where the resources are located

What types of Primary Industries are located in Canada?

• 1) Agriculture

• 2) Mining

• 3) Forestry

• 4) Fishing

Primary Industries

• These primary activities are able to occur due to Canada’s enormous supply of natural resources.

• (Ex. Arable land, forests, minerals, oil and gas deposits)

• Accounts for 4% of Canada’s Workforce

Secondary Industries

• Involves the processing of primary-industry products into finished goods

• Secondary Industries include:

• 1) Manufacturing

• 2) Construction

• 3) Utilities

• Accounts for 20% of the Canadian Workforce

Manufacturing

• The most important secondary industry in Canada

• Responsible for making the large range of products needed by consumers and businesses

• Secondary Industries employ far more people than primary industries do

• Examples. Cars, clothing, electronics

Value Added

• Value Added:• When materials are processed, their value

increases• Ex. Steel is made from iron ore, coal and

limestone. (Primary manufacturing)• After the steel is made, it can be used to

manufacture cars or razor blades (secondary manufacturing)

• Thus, the car made is worth more than the primary resources used to make it, adding value to the steel.

Recent Issues

• Many critics state that Canada looses value added jobs by exporting much of our resources outside Canada

• These groups say we should manufacture products (made of timber, minerals, and agriculture) in Canada

• However, many companies process these products in nations with cheaper costs to produce goods for consumption

Manufacturing Locations?

• Manufacturing companies build their facilities in densely populated areas because they want to be near their customers

• This means that the cost of shipping their products will be as low as possible

• Thus, the larger the population, the higher degree of industry will be created in Canada

Where would Secondary Industry be located in Canada?

Tertiary Industries

• Provides a wide range of services that support primary and secondary industries and society

• Tertiary – providing a service to the person who buys them

• Comprises 75% of the jobs in Canada

• Ex. Government, education, banking, insurance, tourism and retail.

Basic and Non-Basic Industries

• Basic Industries • Provide the money needed to support the

local economy• Ex. Pulp and paper mill, Auto-Parts

Quaternary Industries

• Quaternary Industry

• Highly specialized knowledge based technological and support services

• Ex. Research and Development, Scientific Laboratories, Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health (Winnipeg)

• These industries employ highly skilled and expensive workers
