Are you looking for a job? More and more people are looking for work. Also, more people are changing jobs as job markets change. How do you find out about new jobs? Besides the local newspaper, there are many places to check for more information on possible jobs. Public libraries in most towns and cities have information about jobs and different careers. This information includes lists of local, state, and federal government job opportunities. The information tells you how to apply for the jobs.

Government offices provide services in locating jobs. Federal, state, and local governments offer many civil service job opportunities. Civil service jobs are jobs with the federal, state, or local government like forest rangers, post office clerks, and highway workers.

Many businesses hire workers through employment agencies. Employment agencies handle both temporary and permanent jobs. Many employment agencies list jobs in the want ad section of newspapers. You can also find the names of employment agencies in the telephone directory. Employment agencies usually charge a fee.

Your friends and relatives who are working are another source to learn about jobs. They can tell you about job openings where they are working or about other jobs.

A 79-year-old man was slightly injured on Saturday while waiting in his brand new convertible in a drive-through lane at Burger Prince restaurant. Herman Sherman of Northville suffered a mild burn about 9:00 p.m. when a young female employee accidentally spilled a cup of coffee into his lap. Sherman said the coffee was hot but not scalding.

He refused medical aid, saying the only problem was the stain on his slacks, but it would wash out. He was given a fresh refill. Before Sherman drove off, the restaurant manager, John Johnson, gave him two free gift certificates--one for an extra-large coffee and one for the restaurant's newest sandwich, the McRap.

The employee, who was a new hire, was let go later that evening. She was quite upset. She said she would probably sue Burger Prince for letting her go. She said it was the man's fault for ordering something that she might be able to spill.

My father is very much completely opposite that. He is a very big man, very lound. Very funny, very boistrous. He makes friends no matter where he goes. For example, sometimes he goes to Florida and makes all sorts of good friends. He'll just go off. He's kind of magnent to people, and so my parents are completely opposite, and the compliment each other very well.

Are you going to see them soon? I am going to go home after the holidays and we're going to have a Christmas kind of January or February. Yeah, depending when my brother can come in. Ok. And who are you more like, your mother or your father? I think I have traits of both, actually.

Lesson 3 Please send me a card     First listen and then answer the question.    How many cards did the writer send?    Postcards always spoil my holidays. Last summer, I went to Italy. I visited museums and sat in public gardens. A

friendly waiter taught me a few words of Italian. Then he lent me a book. I read a few line  but I did not understand a word. Everyday I thought about postcards. My holidays passed quickly, but I did not send cards to my friends. On the last day I made a big decision. I got up early and bought thirty-seven cards. I spent the whole day in my room, but I did not write a single card!

You can park your car in long-term parking if you are planning to be away for a few days, or you can ask someone to drop you off in the loading zone right in front of the airport terminal. In some cases, you can check your bags there at curbside, or you might have to go to the check-in counter inside the airport. Many airports now allow you to check in at a computer kiosk, but you will still need to check your bags if you have any. Once you are checked in, you will have to pass through security where they will check your ID and your carry-on bags. You will also need to walk through a metal detector, which will check for illegal items. After you pass through security, you can walk to the gate where you can wait to board your flight. Just wait until they call your section to board. They usually seat first-class passengers and those who need assistance first. Enjoy your flight.

A young woman was having trouble getting a credit card. She was rejected many times. Then she applied for a new job. She was turned down again. Then the reason became clear. She had become the victim of identity theft. She found out that three different people were using her Social Security number. She discovered this when she applied for a job at a new Target store. Some employers are checking credit reports before they hire people. They also use background checks. When Target checked on the woman’s credit history, they found a problem. Target did not hire her. But the law said that they had to tell her why. They told her she was a fraud risk.

A fifteen-year-old boy was injured in a car accident when the minivan he was traveling in was hit by a pickup truck at an intersection. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital. The paramedics said that it appeared that the boy had nothing more serious than a broken left leg, but that internal injuries were always a possibility. The boy was conscious and alert. His mother, who was driving, was uninjured. She said that the truck appeared out of nowhere, and she thought she was going to die. The paramedics said that it appeared that the boy had nothing more serious a broken left leg, but that internal injuries were always a possibility. The boy was conscious and alert. His mother, who was driving, was uninjured. She said that the truck appeared out of nowhere, and she thought she was going die. She turned the steering wheel sharply to the left, and the truck hit her minivan on the passenger side. The driver of the truck was a 50-year-old man who was unemployed and apparently had been drinking—police found 18 empty beer cans inside the truck. The man denied drinking, but he failed the police test for sobriety. When asked to touch his nose with his arms outstretched and eyes closed, he was unable to touch any part of his head.

Where’s my baby?” A dog with a collar, but no identification, was found minutes later, half a block away. The man was taken to the city jail and booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and on causing an accident. At least one credit bureau reported a "high risk fraud alert" linked to Goza's Social Security number.

Target, as required by law, told Goza why her employment application had been rejected. Sacramento attorney Jennifer Shaw specializes in workplace law and says credit reports are just one more way employers try to weed out unreliable or dishonest job applicants. "I think we need to be aware that with the way society is right now, there's more information out there. And that means, unfortunately, there's more information that can be used against us," said Shaw. Melissa Goza's dark cloud may, however, have a silver lining. Target told her she'd be reconsidered for the job after presenting a letter from the Social Security Administration verifying her identity. Now that Goza knows she's an identity theft victim, she will order copies of her credit reports to make corrections. The three major credit bureaus are required by federal law to make their reports available at no cost to consumers once a year through a central website.

Last month, I decided to move out of my parents' place and start living on my own. I searched in the newspaper for apartment listings and found a place not too far from my work. The landlord showed me around the apartment, and because it suited my needs, I signed the rental agreement and paid a deposit, some of which I might get back when I move out. The apartment has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room, and kitchen. It also has a small utility room where I keep my washer and dryer. Right before I moved in, the landlord put in new carpet and had the walls painted, so it looks like a new place. The rent is $650 a month, not including utilities. I pay about $100 for gas, electricity, water, sewage, and Internet service. Unfortunately, the apartment complex doesn't allow pets, so my dog has to stay with my parents for now. I might get a roommate at some point to share expenses, but I haven't decided on that yet. The place looks a little empty because it isn't furnished, but for the time being, I only have the basics: a bed, a table, a small sofa in the living room, and a TV. It's not as liveable and cozy as my parents' place, but it will have to do for now.

Ann: Uh, somewhere under $200 a month, including utilities, if I could. Oh, and I'd prefer to rent a furnished apartment. Roger: Hmm. And anything else? Ann: Yeah. I need parking space. Six consecutive days of spring rain had created a raging river running by Nancy Brown’s farm. As she tried to herd her cows to higher ground, she slipped and hit her head on a fallen tree trunk. The fall knocked her out for a moment or two. When she came to, Lizzie, one of her oldest and favorite cows, was licking her face. The water was rising. Nancy got up and began walking slowly with Lizzie. The water was now waist high. Nancy’s pace got slower and slower. Finally, all she could do was to throw her arm around Lizzie’s neck and try to hang on. About 20 minutes later, Lizzie managed to successfully pull herself and Nancy out of the raging water and onto a bit of high land, a small island now in the middle of acres of white water. Even though it was about noon, the sky was so dark and the rain and lightning so bad that it took rescuers another two hours to discover Nancy. A helicopter lowered a paramedic, who attached Nancy to a life-support hoist. They raised her into the helicopter and took her to the school gym, where the Red Cross had set up an emergency shelter. When the flood subsided two days later, Nancy immediately went back to the “island.” Lizzie was gone. She was one of 19 cows that Nancy lost. “I owe my life to her,” said Nancy sobbingly.

DNA helped a sheriff solve an old murder. Someone killed an eleven year old girl almost 30 years ago. They could not prove who killed her until now.  The sheriff was able to get new DNA evidence from under the victim’s fingernails and from her clothing. That DNA matched the DNA of a man who died in prison three years ago. The man was put in jail because he was found guilty of killing a college professor in 1982.

The new evidence also linked this man to six other murders. It surprised everyone that this man killed the little girl. They thought that she was killed by a different man. The man they thought killed the girl is currently in jail. He murdered three other young women around the same time the little girl was killed. He will be in jail for the rest of his life.

Original Title: DNA Evidence Helps Solve 27-Year-Old Murder Case

DNA evidence has allowed investigators with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department to solve a 27-year-old murder case. Authorities say DNA evidence gathered from the victim's clothing and from beneath her fingernails was the key to determining the identity of the man who killed 11-year-old Cynthia Waxman of Moraga nearly three decades ago. The DNA matched that of Charles "Junior" Jackson, who died of heart disease in Folsom prison three years ago. Jackson was serving a life term for the 1982 slaying of San Francisco City College biology professor Joan Stewart.

The revelation that Jackson killed the girl was something of a surprise to both detectives and the child's family. Convicted serial killer Phillip Hughes was considered the most likely suspect in the murder. He is currently serving three life sentences for murdering three young women in Contra Costa and Alameda counties.

In addition to the murders of Waxman and Stewart, DNA evidence has linked Jackson to the murders of six other East Bay residents killed between 1975 and 1982.

Page 25: Lesson 2 Breakfast or Lunch

Some kids start to drink alcohol at a young age. They think it is part of becoming an adult. They also think drinking is not that bad because so many people do it. They feel it is not as bad as taking drugs. It is easy for kids to get liquor by using fake identification. Parents may start to notice a change in their child’s behavior if the child starts drinking. Kids who drink sometimes stop doing things they normally liked to do. They may keep telephone calls and meetings a secret and not want anybody to touch their things. They act moody and do not have the same eating and sleeping habits.

Parents need to stay involved in their kids’ lives. They should talk to their children about their problems to be aware of any changes.  Parents can be the best protection. Children who get a lot of love can feel good about themselves. It helps them resist doing bad things even when other kids are doing them. Parents can also help set a good example by not drinking and driving. They can have firm rules in the home that everyone follows.  Give the children good ideas on how to say "no" to drinking, even when they are at a party. Try not to overreact or panic if the child tries alcohol. How you handle it can affect their attitude. It may be helpful to talk to other parents about setting up curfews and rules about parties or other events.

When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted.  I'm moving into a new home this weekend, so I decided to do some shopping to furnish the place. I went to an appliance store not too far from my house, and I first bought a refrigerator for the kitchen. You really can't live without one because you have to keep your food cold or frozen so it doesn't spoil. Then, I bought a washer and dryer to clean and dry my clothes. I don't want to go to a laundromat to do this every week like I used to do. Next, I bought a dishwasher. I probably don't need one because I could wash my dishes by hand, but having a dishwasher can make life easier. You simply put the dishes inside, add some dishwashing detergent, and turn the machine on. Finally, I picked up a microwave oven. If I'm really in a hurry and don't have time to cook, I can throw something in the microwave and heat it up quickly. I haven't purchased everything I need to furnish my new place, but I think I have the basic appliances to make life more comfortable for now.I´m moving into new home this weekend, so I decided to do some shopping to furnish the place. A 24-year-old Los Angeles man was taken to a hospital and then to county jail after leading police on a one-hour freeway chase in a stolen SUV. The chase ended in downtown Los Angeles in front of the Spring Hotel. Most of the chase was uneventful, except for an empty bottle of whiskey that the driver threw at one police vehicle. When the driver got into downtown, things started to happen. He ran over a fire hydrant. The water spewed out of the hydrant, causing a geyser that ruined all the books in several carts that a vendor had put outside to attract customers into his bookstore. The driver hurriedly turned west onto Grand Avenue and managed to bang into three parked cars on one side of that street and two cars on the other side. The driver also tried to run over a police officer, who was standing in the crosswalk ordering him to halt.

Turning north, the driver caused a bus to slam on its brakes to avoid a collision. The bus was empty, and the bus driver was uninjured. However, two police cars that were pursuing the SUV from different directions were not so lucky. One of them ran into the front of the bus, and the other into the back. Because the drivers had braked early enough, the damage to their cars was minor. Both officers resumed the chase. They only went two blocks north to find that the SUV had come to a full stop because it had plowed into a newspaper stand. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was

slumped behind the steering wheel. The proprietor of the newsstand was yelling at the driver and shaking a magazine at him. The police called for the ambulance. They charged the driver with failure to yield to a police officer and driving under the influence
