Mathematics in Beauty

Which of the five rectangles do you like best?

Most people choose E. Do you know why? People feel E is

well-balanced and the most pleasing to the eye. What makes them

feel that way is the ratio of its width to its length. It is about 1 to

1.618, which is called "the golden ratio." You can see it in a lot of

items around you, such as books, windows and credit cards. Things

designed with the golden ratio can make people like them more.

Many artists and architects have been interested in this special ratio

and used it in their works. The golden ratio came from the human

body which was thought to be the most beautiful. One of the most

famous uses is Aphrodite of Milos, which has been a perfect

example of women's beauty.

Ancient Greeks built their buildings according to the ratio. One of

the most famous and beautiful buildings is the Parthenon, which was

built about 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece. The front of the temple

forms a perfect golden rectangle. You will find several golden

rectangles in the temple, too.

The golden ratio can also in the paintings of Leonardo

da Vinci. The Mona Lisa is a very good example. you draw a

rectangle around the face, that rectangle turns out to be golden. The

whole painting forms a golden rectangle, too.

Even in the 20th century the golden ratio influence

artists. Piet Mondrian, a modern Dutch artist, was one of them. He

used the simplest shapes and primary colors such as red, blue, and

yellow to express nature from a different point of view. He believed it

was possible to create any shape from basic shapes. The golden

rectangle is one of the basic shapes that keeps appearing in Mondrian's

art.
