WHY?

PAEDIATRICS Highest number of LTFT trainees among hospital specialties - female-dominated specialty Advantage: less stigma, easier to organise than in other specialties 1 CARERS – main reason for training LTFT is childcare but could be for other WORK-LIFE BALANCE LTFT Training is one of the Improving Working Lives (IWL) standards (NHS Policy 2002) 2

NEW - Enhancing Junior Doctors’ Working Lives programme (March 2016) addressed issues with significant negative impact on the quality of life of doctors in training 3-4

PURSUIT OF OTHER INTERESTS LTFT training is available to doctors in training who are unable to work full time for “well founded individual reasons”

LTFT training = Flexible Training Referring to doctors within the Specialist Training System working reduced number of hours compared with full time trainees

Note: SUPERNUMERARY POSTS are not LTFT specific, only granted in exceptional circumstances (trainees with very specific training requirements or requiring extra support), at the discretion of the postgraduate dean.

• Applies if ≥ ST3 at time of new contract • Until exit of training programme or up to August 2025 whichever is sooner • Broad bands (hours worked + banding supplement)

• Applies if < ST3 at time of new contract • Cash floor pay protection • Same system as full timers but on a pro-rata basis
