Les pronoms relatifs composes Relative pronouns such as qui, que, où, dont and lequel are used to avoid repetition within a sentence and usually replace a person or a thing. Formation of pronoms relatifs composes : 1. Préposition + lequel (masculine singular) Préposition + laquelle (feminine singular) Préposition + lesquels (masculine plural) Préposition + lesquelles (feminine plural) *After the prepositions à, pour, chez, avec, sur, dans, sans, contre, en, devant, par, etc, we can’t use simple relative pronouns like qui, que, où, and dont. Instead we use lequel (which) and its variations laquelle, lesquels, and lesquelles,etc. Eg: La personne à côté de laquelle je me suis assis ne parle pas français. (The person next to whom I am sitting doesn’t speak French.) C'est la table sur laquelle j'ai écrit toute mon enfance. Les deux valises avec lesquelles j'ai voyagé ont disparu. 2. The gender of the composed relative pronoun agrees with the noun it refers to. 3. With prepositions À and De, contraction will take place with definite articles. E.g.: À + le = au À + les = aux
