About MeHello, my name is Leo Liu and I am currently a forth year Architecture student at the University of Waterloo studying in Rome, Italy. I enjoy learning new skills and sharing what I learned with the people I work with. Enclosed is a selection of works that I have done both inside and outside of school. I have learned many things over the course of my education, and hope that the Co-op program will continue give me the experience I need to grow my knowledge.I hope you will enjoy my portfolio.

HOUSE FOR A THEATER PAINTERBACKDROP4A STUDIO
Backdrop is a House designed for a hypothetical theater painter. The paint-er in mind enjoys painting locations and settings throughout the day, but also has a side interest of theater design. A few times per month, he hosts theater events where he welcomes the public as well as theater groups to get together.
The design of this house focuses on the existing surroundings of Giardini di via Carlo Felice, which naturally has different types of public spaces on either side. The design is a simple linear space that “patches” the part of the Aurelian wall that has fallen. The minimal approach of the design al-lows the building to have multiple uses, allowing the artist to post his work as he is working on them. The cantilever of the studio also provides en-hancements to the surrounding public spaces without actually contacting them, providing shade as well as potential garden and theater spaces.

LANTERNS FOR SAILORS EREBUS & TERRORIco 2B
Every summer, the second-year undergraduate class at Waterloo Architecture produces, writes, and per-forms a play for their Cultural History course. This year, We were challenged to re-imagine and combine Mary Shelley’s original 1818 version of Frankenstein with Captain John Franklin’s infamous 1848 voyage to the Canadian Arctic. My main roll in the production of Erebus & Terror was the Design, Coordination, and Production of 7 Lanterns used by the Sailors throughout the play, which acted as a symbol for their lives as well as playing a large part in the lighting of the play.

Slit is an experimental housing complex designed by combining multiple unit types through a matt typology. The exercise started off by choosing 3 distinct families within Literature, which can be from books, movies, or TV shows, and designing a house for each family based on a created scenario. Once the units are designed, they are placed onto a site through various methods to combine and merge them into something more comprehensive.

Description:The Powerpuff Girls is an television series that centers around 3 super powered girls and their scientistfather/creator. Throughout the series, the girls fight crime in the city of Townsville while their fathertries to give them a normal life. However, due to the nature of their superpowers, they have becomecelebrities in the city, which makes living a normal life somewhat challenging.Due to their celebrity status, their family dynamics have to keep alternating between a normal familystructure and a celebrity family structure. I have chosen to focus on this aspect by exploring ways toseparate open and closed spaces as well as ways to control facade permeability by light and view.
Scenario:The girls recently had an accident from their crime fighting hobby. Although it wasn’t serious, the professoroverreacted like the usual and decided to move away to get away from the stress. The professorjust doesn’t want the girls to get hurt, so he’s trying to protect them the best he can. Due to this,he has to work from home to still be able to support for the family.
Design:The main ideas to take away from this scenario is the fact that the professor needs to work at home, while at the same time protecting his daughters. The design of this unit typology allows him to accomplishthat by designing his lab around the main body of the house, essentially creating a protectivebarrier in which he can work from.
Description:Dexter is an television series that centers around Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter pattern analyst whoalso leads a secret life as a serial killer. Dexter tries to live 2 separate lives while keeping his darkerlife a secret. Despite his hobby of killing people, he has a normal job and a loving family, but neitherof his other lives will understand his hobby. Throughout the series, his normal life starts to suspect hismurder life, but never quite finds enough evidence to reveal his dark life. I have decided to use thisplot formula as a characteristic in the programming of the housing by providing various moments inwhich the architecture hints at a space to another space, but never quite reveals how to get there.
Scenario:Dexter is becoming close enough to Rita that he finally moves in with her. However, after doing sothey find that their current house is too small. Dexter has always been very busy with his work andhobby, however now he has to add being a family man without involving the two together on top ofthat. Due to this he finds that having a place at home in which he can work alone can help cut downon his commute time, thus allowing him to juggle around his 3 lives.
Design:The main ideas to take away from this scenario is the fact that Dexter needs to work in his housewhile being separated from his family. That being said, he still wants to be a part of his family andmaybe subconsciously wants his family to find out about his secret hobby. The design of this unittypology allows that by having all the private rooms extrude into a central living area from 2 side wallsthat define the central space. This hides the function of the rooms in plain view, allowing Dexter towork freely in them while still being involved within the house.
Description:Hamlet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare that dramatizes the revenge that princeHamlet seeks on king Claudius for murdering his father. In the story, Hamlet’s uncle Claudiusmurders Hamlet’s father and marries his mother Gertrude to steal the throne and control thekingdom, in which Hamlet plans to exact his revenge by trying to kill Claudius. Throughout theplay, a continuous game of cat and mouse unfolds as hamlet tries to reveal Claudius’s evil deedand Claudius trying to stay innocent. The characteristic of this conflict can be translated intoprogramming in terms of territory, thus i have chosen to explore different ways to divide territoryand different uses of partitions.
Scenario:After a dispute between Hamlet and his uncle, Lady Gertrude decides a family vacation to theirother home outside of the kingdom would release some tension. Hamlet and Claudius are stillmad at each other and are not on speaking terms, but since they have to live under they sameroof they decide to mark their own space to keep the other one out so they can plot againsteach other. Gertrude thinks this is childish of them, but this eventually turns into a territorial warto control the vacation home.
Design:The main ideas to take away from this scenario is that both Hamlet and Claudius wants to bealone while Gertrude wants them to be together. This is done by dividing each floor of the houseinto three areas with two walls. One area is hamlet, one area is claudious, and the central areais a communal space that Gertrude resides in as she just want them to be a family. As the housechanges levels, the areas changes sizes, symbolizing the internal territorial conflict within thehouse.

NUIT BLANCHE INSTALLATIONPLANETERRAEUMF_RM LAB
From February to October of 2014, a small group of students from the F_RMlab research group at the Uni-versity of Waterloo’s School of Architecture worked to produce an 8-meter geodesic dome, whose interiorwas then covered with video projections captured from an airborne camera. The dome was created as an installation for Nuit Blanche in Toronto, a city-wide art exhibition attended by over 1 million visitors every year. It is an annual all-night arts festival that brings contemporary art to the masses through the interven-tion and recreation of unused public spaces for one night only. The airborne view captured by the camera shows urban development as the shared construction and solidified efforts of generations of people from a perspective the average pedestrian would not have access to.

A TIME LAPSE OF SUNSETS THROUGHOUT NYCSUNSETS OF NY3B COOP
Every Coop term, I try to learn a new skill by working on an personal project in my free time. In past Coops, I self taught myself Revit, photography, 3DS max, and vray, so for this coop I decided to learn videography.
Coming from a photography background, Videography seems like a whole other level. Not only do I have to focus on the composition and lighting, but also the temporality aspact of a moving picture.
Time lapsing seemed to be a natural bridge between video and photography. It is essentially applying what I knew about photography, and simply taking many photos over time to form a video that not only represents the space, but also time.
This project is a composition of 15,000+ pictures over a 5 month period. Each location in the video took 2-4 hours to shoot, and another 2-4 hours to post process. This project took a lot of time, but that’s the way time lapses are. I have learned a lot throughout this project and many applications of which it may be useful in the future.
The Video Can be Watched at: https://youtu.be/DsblBcfgtWw
Following, is a series of sequences created from the video
Enjoy.
