Perhaps this love has something to do with the way Lent calls us to action. On Ash Wednesday the words of the prophet Joel ring out, “Come back to me with all your heart, fasting, weeping, mourning.” God’s invitation at this time is to conversion and conversion means getting our lives back into balance. The Church is very specific about the way we can reach this balance by challenging us to re-assess our relationships. Our relationship to God, ourselves and our neighbour. We know the familiar challenge to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These three disciples are often referred to as the tripod of Lent. Each of them gives support and meaning to the next, all three creating a balanced whole. In his Lenten message Pope Francis speaks of these practices. Fasting: learning to change our attitude towards others and all of creation, turning away from the temptation to “devour” everything to satisfy our voracity and being ready to suffer for love, which can fill the emptiness of our hearts. Prayer: teaches us to abandon idolatry and the self-sufficiency of our ego, and to acknowledge our need of the Lord and his mercy. Almsgiving: whereby we escape from the insanity of hoarding everything for ourselves in the illusory belief that we can secure a future that does not belong to us. And thus, to rediscover the joy of God’ s plan for creation and for each of us, which is to love him, our brothers and sisters, and the entire world, and to find in this love our true happiness. There are many ways of entering into Lent. This week the Project Compassion material is available as well as the “Trust” daily reflection book. I recommend you download the app ‘”Compassion”. Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday night at Mater Dei. God invites, what will we respond? Blessings on the week ahead. Project Compassion Boxes are now available at the entrance of each church and at the parish office.

Project Compassion - Thandolwayo from Zimbabwe
Life in her village in north-western Zimbabwe wasn’t easy for 12 year old Thandolwayo.
Her father left several years ago and her mother lives in a town 90 km’s away where she works as a casual labourer. Thandolwayo lives with her grandparents and attends the local school which has just 35 students.
Every morning she’d walk 7 km’s and risk being attacked by crocodiles as she collected clean water for her family. She’d then go to school feeling exhausted.
Thandolwayo’s grandparents sell pearl millet bran to fishermen and farmers for animal feed. They also sell chickens - but the income it brings isn’t enough to support the family.
Thandolwayo’s hope to be a nurse seemed almost impossible to realise, until Caritas Hwange helped the village to install two solar-powered pumps to draw the water up from the river, as well as two 10,000 litre storage tanks.
Thanks to Caritas’ support, water is now on tap in the village, benefitting its 500 residents - and Thandolwayo can concentrate on her education.
“Now I can bathe every day, the distance to collect water for the family has
been drastically reduced,” Thandolwayo says. “We now drink clean, safe
water and diseases are no longer affecting us.”
The plentiful water supply has also triggered new ventures. Water is being used to mould bricks for building houses and to pound maize to sell. Plans are underway to establish a community garden and a fish pond, to generate a better income. What your donations can do…. $45.00 can buy school supplies for a student like Thandolwayo in Zimbabwe, who dreams of becoming a nurse.
Please come and enjoy a cup of coffee and cake with other parents from the local community. It's an informal gathering to chat and meet other parents while our children play and get messy with craft. When: Tuesday mornings at 9:00am (during school terms). Where: St Peter Chanel Parish Hall. What to bring: A gold coin donation (in order to keep the coffee pot full and the kids entertained). Facebook Tuesday Play group@St Johns Wood Parish Hall
Please pray for the Alpha Team and
the guests participating in the
experience.

For additional information, please visit the Archdiocese of Brisbane website https://brisbanecatholic.org.au/ and to careers. The Archdiocese of Brisbane has standards of conduct for employees and volunteers to maintain a safe and healthy environment. Our
commitment to these standards requires that we conduct background referencing for all persons who will engage in direct and regular
involvement with children, young people and/or vulnerable adults.
Planned Giving The Parish Finance Council is appealing to parishioners to consider their financial contributions. The parish income is falling and while we remain in a sound financial position at the moment this will change if we do not increase our regular income. This is an opportunity to commit to giving regularly by direct debit or credit card. The envelope system is still available. It is also an opportunity, if you have the means, to increase your weekly commitment. Please contact the Parish Office if you wish to discuss this matter.
