PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Distinctive building got off to rocky start in 1920s
Royal Park Arcade (aka Parkway Hotel/Plaza), in the 2000 block of 11th Avenue, was completed in May 1926. During the Florida Boom era, Vero Beach like many other cities had a shortage of places for people to live. This building played an important role in attracting business entrepreneurs and providing residential apartments. The name was used because of its proximity to the Royal Park Inn that opened in 1925. It was intended to be the “shopping center” for hotel guests. It was off to a rocky start when it fell into receivership and almost a year later it opened with seven businesses at the beginning of the Florida Bust in 1927. It stayed in receivership for many years. In July 1935, the famous “Mac’s Tavern” opened. Owned and operated by former Mayor Alex MacWilliam, it provided a dining room, bar and kitchen. It did not last long. The building was purchased in 1937 and it became the “Luxuro.” According to the newspaper ad, it had a “Modern
sandwich bar and coffee shop and guest rooms designed for those wishing the utmost in comfort.” The rooms included steam heat with private baths and a ballroom/dance floor was added on the first floor. Within a few short months, it was renamed the Parkway Hotel in 1938 as a result of the locals “urging a change in the name.” In May 1944, the Parkway was purchased by
Josephine Harris Steele of Orlando. Sadly, it was purchased several times in succeeding years. The building went through numerous changes. When the Brooklyn Dodgers came to town for spring training, it is said that Jackie Robinson was slipped into town so he could stay at the Parkway. The other players stayed in the Dodger housing.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next Republican presidential debate:
• It wasn’t the best night to visit Ola Mae Daniels and Helen Jackson. We had just learned 14 people were killed in a shooting in San Bernardino, California. Still, seeing the Christmas displays in their front yards provided a certain amount of comfort in this increasingly crazy world. Ola Mae and Helen are sisters. They’ve lived across the street from each other, in the 3900 block of 45th Place in Gifford, for about 40 years. (Helen has lived in the same house for 51 years.) Let me tell you, their Christmas displays are simply spectacular. They are just as Linda Morgan described. She contacted me via Facebook to let me know about the sisters. Ola Mae’s son, Norris Jones, did most of the decorating.
He started on Thanksgiving. It took him three days to decorate his mother’s house, and then it was on to his aunt’s house. Many of the decorations are homemade. “I like creating things,” he said. The 15-foot star on top of Ola Mae’s roof is a good example of his creativity. Amazing work by Norris. “He tells everyone on the phone (asking for directions to the house) to just follow the star,” Ola Mae said. If you want to see the star, check out the photos on the Lemmon Lines page on Facebook. The Christmas displays draw a crowd each year. “We get a lot of traffic through here,” Helen said. For good reason.

LEMMON DROPS: In Gifford neighborhood, sisters show Christmas spirit
It’s worth the trip, folks.• Speaking of Christmas decorations, C.J. Cannon’s has done it again. Year after year, the restaurant at the Vero Beach Regional Airport turns into a winter wonderland. Kudos to Lois Cappelen, Pat Cannon and Chuck Cannon for devoting a weekend to this crowd-pleasing project. (Lois arrived at 2 a.m. on a Saturday and couldn’t wait to get started.)• Given their popularity among Republicans in the state, how can Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush be trailing Donald Trump in polls for Florida’s March 15 primary? Makes no sense. So much for the homecourt advantage. Prediction: Trump won’t win in Indian River County.• Next time you’re out and about, perhaps Melody McCabe’s email will have you looking at local roads a little differently: “I have been wanting to mention something to you. I’ve had 5 flat tires in the past year. Wow! The more I drive, the more I notice how dirty our streets are in Vero. Have
you looked at an intersection lately? Do we not have street sweepers anymore? Just curious because it seems the roads are filled with so much debris.”• In this space last week, I wondered aloud if I’m the only person in Indian River County who hasn’t seen any of the “Star Wars” movies. Bob Livingston and Sharon Letts were among those to let me know we’re in the same club. Curtis Carpenter made me laugh with this email: “I’ve never seen any of them either. I’m only 31, but I always felt like I was the only person in the world that hadn’t seen any of them either. The irony, all my 5-year-old wants for Christmas is ‘Star Wars’ stuff. (I’m assuming the ‘light saber’ is the catalyst.) I don’t think we’ll be sharing this similarity for long, though. His birthday is Dec. 23. I plan on watching the first one with him on that day.” What a birthday present for Micah!• Is it just me, or have drivers gotten a lot more “aggressive” on local roadways?

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
You might not recognize King’s Baptist Church by name, but it’s easily identified by those driving past it in the 3200 block of 58th Avenue. “They all know the plane,” said Al Walsh, an associate pastor. For the third consecutive December, a replica of a World War I-era plane sits in front of the church to let people know it’s time for the story of “Christmas 1914” to be told. “Every year is a different story (about what it was like on Christmas Eve at the start of the war) … but within that story is the true meaning of Christmas,” he said. “As a church, we hardly do anything that’s this popular.”
Attendance for each of the first two installments of “Christmas 1914” was about 5,000. “It blew us away,” he said. This year’s production – entitled “The Last Hero” with seven vignettes lasting 10 minutes apiece – will be held on eight evenings, Dec. 10-13 and 17-20. It’ll be open from 6 to 9 p.m. There is no charge for admission. (For more information, log on to Christmas1914.com.)
Morning Star Presbyterian Church, located on Oslo Road, is a partner in the “Christmas 1914” production. “They’re very involved,” Al said. Between the two churches, there are 165 actors in the vignettes and 70 others working behind the scenes. In case you’re wondering, it’s an original production. Telling the story of the “Christmas Eve Truce” was the idea of Pastor Frank Ellis.
