antics, and lilting song. Birds in Art artworks inspire in endlessly novel ways, too, evoking the freedom of flight and the fragility of birds’ earthbound existence. Experience this year’s 43rd annual, internationally renowned exhibition; discover how the all-new paintings, sculptures, and graphics of 114 worldwide artists enchant you.

2018 Master Wildlife Artist

New England artist Cindy House’s exquisite pastel landscapes appear –

by design – to be oil paintings and feature sweeping vistas of avian habitats. Meticulously and magically capturing ecosystems, birds in their surroundings, and fleeting moments in time via pastel pigment on paper, Cindy’s paintings convey the essence of birdwatching. While searching the foliage and sky, experience a wafting breeze, glint of sunlight, or stillness of water until a bird is spotted in the distance and the search is rewarded. Fifteen Cindy House artworks comprise her 2018 Birds in Art Master Artist exhibition.

Scholarship funds are available for youth and adult program fees thanks to the Wisconsin Valley Art Association. Call the Museum.

Cancellation Policy: Advance registration is required for all classes and other programs having the phone symbol. Places will be held only upon receipt of full participation fee. Fees are refundable (minus a 20% handling charge) up to seven days before a class begins. After that time fees are non-refundable unless there is a waiting list (refund minus 20% handling charge) or the program is cancelled (full refund).

Each Thursday evening during Birds in Art, the Museum remains open until 7:30 pm. Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra ensembles provide music to enhance gallery strolls. Several Thursday evenings also include presentations, demonstrations, or hands-on art making, too.

Watercolor InnovationsKris Parins Artist ResidencyTuesday – Sunday October 2 – 7

isconsin native and Birds in Art artist Kris Parins shares her expertise and enthusiasm for watercolor during this residency, guiding area students through hands-on painting in the Museum’s classroom and engaging visitors during public programs. Parins demonstrates her distinctive watercolor-pouring technique during an evening Art 101 program; teens and adults can try their hand at the process during a weekend studio workshop.

A grant from the B.A. & Esther Greenheck Foundation supports the Kris Parins artist residency.

Wildfowl Carving Josh Guge Artist ResidencyThursday – Sunday November 1 – 4

triking sculptures of delicate songbirds and carefully carved kestrels exemplify the work of Birds in Art artist Josh Guge. An experienced instructor, he runs Guge Institute and Art Studio, traveling throughout the country to teach the art of woodcarving to students of all ages. During his residency, Josh leads an Art 101 presentation and a three-day workshop for adults.

Behind The Wall of Birds Presentation & Book SigningJoin Jane Kim as she tells the story of her 2,500-square-foot mural for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology depicting the evolution of birds. The two-and-a-half-year journey to complete this monumental mural is documented in a new book, The Wall of Birds: One Planet, 243 Families, 375 Million Years, published by Harper Collins. A book signing follows Jane’s presentation; books available for purchase at the Museum.

rtist, science illustrator, and founder of Ink Dwell – a studio designed to inspire people to love and protect the earth, Jane Kim specializes in creating large-scale public installations. Her paintings capture the awe-inspiring realism of the natural world. She received widespread acclaim for her Cornell University Lab of Ornithology mural celebrating the evolution and diversity of birds. During Jane’s Woodson Art Museum residency, observe her at work as she completes a large, commissioned painting onsite, illustrating how bird feathers get their color. She also will lead a Birds in Art gallery walk, offer a full-day scientific illustration workshop for teens and adults, and present an evening presentation about her work and artistic process as well as sign copies of The Wall of Birds, which chronicles the Lab of Ornithology project.

Support for the Jane Kim mural project comes from the Community Arts Grant Program of the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin, with funds provided by the Wisconsin Arts Board, a state agency; the Community Foundation; and the B. Regal Bearing applies the tenets of portraiture to more than sixty artworks from the Museum’s collection. As with human portraits, the artists represented captured the essence of their subjects using a variety of formats, including a focus on single birds without backgrounds as well as the inclusion of habitat or attributes that help to characterize a species or place it in context. On view through August 11, 2019.

Discover the beauty of shorebirds – sanderlings, stilts, turnstones, whimbrels, yellowlegs, and others – through sculptures and works on paper from the collection. On view through August 18, 2019.

Vibrant silk-screens affirm Faust’s mastery of the medium and her knowledge of and affinity for birds and their habitats. Honored by the Woodson Art Museum as the Birds in Art Master Artist in 1999, she was the first woman and the first printmaker to receive this recognition. Anne designated the Woodson Art Museum as the repository for her artistic oeuvre, representing a commitment by the artist to ensure the Museum’s collection includes each of her screen-prints. On view through February 17, 2019.

For almost twenty years, the Museum has welcomed a steady flow of artists in residence, most of whom settled into our modest guesthouse for stays of varying lengths and honored us by not only their extraordinary work in the classroom, in the galleries, and on the grounds, but also by leaving their marks in a guestbook. To celebrate the artist residency program, multiple guestbooks have been carefully unbound and the pages framed and presented in the classroom to inspire students and all visitors during this fall’s residencies with Birds in Art artists Kris Parins and Josh Guge and with science illustrator and artist Jane Kim. On view September 4 through November 25, 2018.
