Leiden University Press is pleased to present our new and forthcoming titles in this Autumn 2013 catalogue.
You will find titles in an exciting range of research areas such as archaeology, artistic research and Iranian Studies. Different aspects of history are covered by Richard T. Griffiths’ book on EU history; Physics as a Calling, Science for Society on the history of science; and the publications on music history and Dutch Brazil.
The catalogue highlights three of our excellent and established book series: Law, Governance and Development; the timely Debates on Islam and Society; and the Iranian Studies Series. We would also like to draw your attention to the backlist of CNWS publications distributed by Leiden University Press as well as our own backlist selection.
The majority of titles in this catalogue are available in digital format (for instance as e-books) and can be purchased online. We are continuing our dynamic and growing e-presence as the pace of publishing innovation accelerates.
We hope you will agree that this will be another exciting season for our publishing programme, reflecting the strength of academic research at Leiden University. We look forward to expanding this publication list in the future.

Thank you M. MonnetEssays on the History of European Integration
This book collects contributions by Richard T. Griffiths on the history of European integration, some published for the first time in English. All the contributions contain updated references to recent literature. The essays range in chronology from the early experiences with the Marshall Plan to the difficulties and opportunities for the EFTA countries afforded by association with the EEC in the 1970s and 80s. The volume also contains an essay which poses the question of what would have happened had there been no Schuman Plan back in 1950. This book should appeal to students of contemporary history, especially those interested in EU history, and to political scientists who will discover a rich palette of case studies upon which to test their theories. Its constructively critical slant on developments provides interesting perspectives to those general readers seeking a nuanced approach between the extremes of the current pro- or anti- in the debates on Europe. I have long wished that something like this would be available […] The collection is marked by an outstanding talent for disentangling complex historical processes and to illustrate key issues quite briefly. The author takes great pleasure in debunking myths, […] and he does so with great skill and remarkably little malice. – Prof. Helge Ø. Pharo, University of Oslo

Sjoerd van der Linde
Digging Holes AbroadAn Ethnography of Dutch Archaeological Research Projects Abroad
Over the last few decades, Western Archaeology increasingly abandoned its ‘ivory tower’ in order to investigate, negotiate and develop its position and role in global society. Challenging issues when undertaking archaeological research projects abroad include: the way in which we deal with other people’s views in the interpre-tation of archaeological materials; the way in which we integrate our narratives and practices with other heritage demands; and the way in which we deal with power differences in both these pro-cesses. In Digging Holes Abroad Sjoerd van der Linde explores how archaeological research projects abroad work in their social context. Specific attention is given to the relationship between ‘collaborative’ policies and actual field practice.
Sjoerd van der Linde is a researcher and lecturer of Archaeological
Heritage Management at Leiden University.
Van der Linde’s innovative cross-disciplinary approach cuts very close to the bone but in a productive and collegial way that ensures that its unflinching scrutiny of our practice will result in real practical and conceptual advances in ‘digging holes abroad’. - Prof. Ian Lilley, University of Queensland, Australia

The Exposition of Artistic ResearchPublishing Art in Academia
This book places artistic research in the heart of the academic debate. The Exposition of Artistic Research works around terms such as ‘exposition’, ‘artistic research’ and ‘archiving’ which are critical at a time when art is striving to find a place at the academic research table.
It offers a new and fascinating view by bringing together reflective and methodological approaches to exposition writing from a variety of artistic disciplines, including design, music and fine art, linking it to questions of publication and the use of technology. Eighteen outstanding scholars focus on writing spaces, research practices, disciplinary negotiations and the archive and its publication. A thread running through their essays is that the role of the exposition, rather than simply reflecting upon or analyzing the art that it exposes, is performative and intensifies it. The Exposition of Artistic Research builds on Michael Schwab and Henk Borgdorff’s continued work in the field of artistic research publication, particularly their contribution to the Journal for Artistic Research and the Artistic Research Catalogue Project.
Henk Borgdorff is professor of Research in the Arts at the
University of the Arts, The Hague, and visiting professor of
Aesthetics at the University of Göteborg (Sweden).
Michael Schwab is an artist who interrogates post-
conceptual uses of technology in a variety of media,
including photography, drawing, printmaking and installation
art. He is a tutor at the Royal College of Art, London,
research associate at the Berne University of the Arts,
Switzerland, and research fellow at the Orpheus Institute,
Ghent (Belgium).

Bahman Solati
The Reception of Hafiz The Sweet Poetic Language of Hafiz in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Persia
The quantity of scholarship on Persian literature is enormous. Yet works of literary criticism and analytical studies are a minute and newly-added portion of its entirety. With few and noteworthy exceptions, the works are agglomerated around the names of such giants of Persian literature as Hafiz, Rumi, and Ferdowsi. In this book Solati demonstrates the influence of Hafiz on the thoughts, poetic language, and philosophy of the nineteenth and twentieth century Persian poets, writers and critics.
Bahman Solati is Assistant Professor
in Persian Language at the University
of Exeter (UK). He is the author of
several publications, including
Rubaiyyat-i-Hakim Umar Khayyam,
and Persian Proverbs in three volumes.

The Holy DramaPersian Play in Modern Iran
Persian passion play or ta’ziya depicts the role of the Prophet’s granddaughter Zeynab during the tragic death of the third Shiite Imam Hoseyn in Karbala in 680. This book depicts how Zeynab has become a role model in modern Iranian society, especially during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war.
Mahnia A. Nematollahi Mahani
worked as an editor at the Center
for International Cultural Studies in
Tehran before she started her
academic career in Persian Studies
at Leiden University.
This is a timely addition to the growing body of scholarship on the subject of ta’ziya, based chiefly on previously unstudied textual sources along with a masterful analysis of a central aspect of twelver Shia Islam as practiced in Iran. - Sunil Sharma, Boston University.

IRANIAN SERIES
The ancient Persian storytelling tradition has survived until the present day among the Tajik villages in the Gissar mountains of Uzbekistan. This book explores the story of Barzu and demonstrates that the historical Transoxania, since the time of Alexander the Great, has always been a melting pot of diverse shared cultures. In the village of Pasurxi, near Boysun in the Surxandaryo region of contemporary Uzbekistan, a vivid oral tradition exists on the basis of stories from the Persian Book of Kings or Šohnoma (Shahnama), composed more than a thousand years ago by the poet Firdavsi (Ferdowsi). These stories deal with the hero Barzu who is presented in the stories from Boysun as the offspring of Suhrob, one of the most tragic heroes of the Šohnoma, and his father, the legendary champion Rustam, ruler of Sistan. The storytellers Jura Kamol and Mullo Ravšan composed two different versions of the story of Barzu in the Tajik as spoken in the Surxandaryo region. They used to tell their stories during evening gatherings in the village. Two versions of the story have been recorded, transcribed and analysed by Ravshan Rahmoni and translated by Gabrielle van den Berg.
Ravshan Rahmoni is professor of Tajik literature at the Tajik State University in Dushanbe and works on Tajik oral traditions, specifically those of the Surkhandarya region in Uzbekistan.Gabrielle van den Berg is lecturer in Persian at the University of Leiden.
“The aim of the authors is comparable to the noble mission of the author of the most famous version of the Shahnama epic tradition written down a millennium ago by the poet Firdawsi, who adapted many stories of Persian, Scythian and Parthian folklore and created an iconic collective national identity symbol.”Dr F.I. Dick Smakman
The Accent BuilderA British English Pronunciation Course for Speakers of Dutch
This course book introduces the vowels and consonants as well as the most important stress and intonation patterns of British English. Through small chunks of information and short analysis and repetition exercises, students are, in a step-by-step fashion, urged to build their English accent. The target is understandable, natural and educated English. The tips and exercises aim primarily at making learners aware of the nature of sounds, and this course gives them the opportunity to practice their knowledge by listening to and imitating native speakers of English. A website with recordings of words, sentences and texts is part of this course. Furthermore, learners gain access to an online tool which measures the acoustics of their pronunciation and compares it with those of a native speaker model. By the end of the course, students will not only have improved their own pronunciation; they will also be more confident when teaching others English pronunciation at an advanced level.
Dick Smakman is Assistant Professor of
English Language and Linguistics for

He teaches and publishes in the fields of

Physics as a Calling, Science for SocietyStudies in Honour of A.J. Kox
Physics as a Calling, Science for Society is a token of appreciation for A. J. Kox on his retirement as Pieter Zeeman Professor of History of Science at the University of Amsterdam. The papers, written by close colleagues from the Netherlands and abroad, reflect Kox’s own fields of interest: physics and Dutch science in the period 1850-1950. The book focuses especially on the two towering figures of theoretical physics to whom Kox has devoted a large part of his professional life: Hendrik Lorentz and Albert Einstein. A central theme in many of the contribu-tions is the tension that existed in this period between fundamental science and social concerns.

APPLYING SHARI‘A IN THE WEST
Facts, Fears and the Future of Islamic Rules on Family Relations in the West
Edited by Maurits S. Berger
This volume provides new insights in the concept of shari‘a in the West, and sets out a framework of how shari‘a in the West can be studied. The premise of this volume is that one needs to focus on the question ‘What do Muslims do in terms of shari‘a?’ rather than ‘What is shari‘a?’. This perspective shows that the practice of shari‘a is restricted to a limited set of rules that mainly relate to religious rituals, family law and social interaction. The framework of this volume then continues to explore two more interactions: the Western responses to these practices of shari’a and, in turn, the Muslim legal reaction to these responses.
Prof. dr. Maurits S. Berger, LLM is a lawyer and Arabist. He is professor of Islam in the Contemporary West at Leiden University where he holds the Sultan of Oman Chair of Oriental Studies, and is a senior research associate with the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in The Hague.

Studies in Medieval and
Renaissance Book Culture
Writing in Context:
Insular Manuscript
Culture 500-1200
Edited by Erik Kwakkel
Leiden University Press
This volume presents six essays related to manuscript culture in Britain. At the collection’s core are books made between c. 500 and c. 1200, but other objects that contain writing are discussed as well, including charters and metalwork. In addition to augmenting our understanding of different areas of Insular manuscript culture, the essays highlight, in different ways, the tight relationship between a manuscript’s palaeographical and codicological features, and the culture in which the object was produced and used. Extending their expertise to a broad scholarly audience interested in the medieval book, the contributors discuss various aspects of Insular written culture, including book culture in Mercia, the layout of Anglo-Saxon charters, and the transition from Anglo-Saxon to Norman-inspired script and book production.
Contributions by Michelle Brown, Mary Garrison, Erik Kwakkel, Kathryn Lowe, Francis Newton and Teresa Webber. Erik Kwakkel is palaeographer at Leiden University, where he directs Turning Over a New Leaf: Manuscript Innovation in the Twelfth-Century Renaissance, a project funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (nwo).
‘This collection represents a very valuable contribution to our understanding of early book history in its most capacious sense.’e l a i n e t r e h a r n e , Professor of English, Stanford University
