EDITORIALReading in the press the other day, Sam Bailey is third favourite to win The X Factor, but after her version of The Power Of Love, when I’m sure people around the country were like me, watching her had goose bumps/hairs on the back of your neck standing on end! She absolutely nailed it! word and note perfection, and for me a performance second to none so far! Sam has raised the bar to a very high standard, and from the looks and comments from all four judges, she has what it takes to win! Everyone....was gob smacked, and didn’t she look well with her make-over?!? Sam, for me, is certain to get a recording contract from someone in the industry, I just hope she will still do a few more appearances for her grass roots!?! More on this next month! Back in the September issue I reported the Wigston R.B.L. changing it’s name,
well the Elms Social and Ex-Service Club is having a Grand Opening Day on 2nd November 2013 of which there will be several events during the day, followed by a knockout group The Nanna Radleys in the evening. Well only eight weeks or so to Christmas, is your Club ready?? Extending hours - extra staffing - acts costing more over the festive time fur and feathers etc. etc. Hopefully tills will be ringing glad tidings and yes, paying up! It’s a busy time for clubs, even though, hopefully, monies coming in, look at the out goings too! I know a lot of clubs are still struggling, and if some committees don’t watch purse strings it’s so easy to slip into finance problems. We also have to look at the rising costs of heating our clubs so controlling staff hours, opening times, price of acts, when to have heating on (not in an empty club) could keep your club open and staff in a job!!! Ent Secs at the last meeting at Enderby included The Elms, Eyres Monsell, Pool, Latimer, Sileby, Melton RBL, Enderby, South Wigston WMC, Thurmaston PWMC and Lutterworth. December and January 2014 material to be given in together please, to help with printing over the festive period, by 7th November 2013 to D.L. Rollason, 25 Amyson Road, Leicester LE5 2EB or telephone 0116 2410011 or e-mail c l u b n e w s @ h o t m a i l . c o . u k o r [email protected]

Well, looks like that was our summer for this year, out come the jumpers and coats - lol!!!As I previously said I went to Manchester to see Herman's Hermits and The Tremeloes. What a lovely day I had, Herman's Hermits were first on performing their hits. Barry Whitwam still 'banging his drums' after 49 years... Next were Tremeloes also at the age of nearly 70 Dave Munden is still in good voice and the four band member gave a fantastic version of Silence is Golden. Both bands are a must see, I know Herman's Hermits are on a tour and will be at De Montfort Hall in November!!! Back to Clubland, and yet again I went to see Mick Knight at Birstall, who is gathering quite a following. What can I say that I haven't already said about this charismatic vocalist? Think I have already said it previously, he is a brilliant professional and always interacts with the audience. Just make sure there is a chippy nearby for him! He had the audience on the dance floor after only the second song of the night! After a change of plan I went to Thurmaston to see Ian 'Sludge' Lees (appeared in TISWAS and New Faces) from Cannock. Ian is a fantastic comedian and good for a family audience, no swearing, no discriminative jokes (ok the odd Irishman/Englishman/Scotchman joke) just good clean fun. Ian chose to work from the floor of the room instead of using the stage. On with Ian, was a male vocalist from Worksop by the name of Rob Linacre. Rob sang songs from Matt Munro to Killers and Drifters to Robbie Williams (Candy) and finished with a favourite of mine Hero - Enrique Iglesias. It was only at the end of the night Rob mentioned and apologised for keep checking his phone, but that his 5 year old daughter was ill when he left and he had just received a text to say she was being taken to hospital, a true professional and I hope he daughter is better now. For those who don't watch X-Factor get voting for our very own Sam Bailey, who is through to the live shows, Good Luck Sam xx Christmas is only around the corner... what happened to 2013? Lisa

THE ELMS SOCIAL AND EX-SERVICE CLUB(FORMERLY WIGSTON RBL)
On Saturday November 2nd, come down to the club to celebrate the grand opening of The Elms Social and Ex-Service Club, there will be numerous events going on in the daytime for all of the family to enjoy and then at night you will be entertained by a cracking live band, The Nanna Radleys. The membership subscriptions are also now being taken and everyone is welcom to join the club and be a member to enjoy all activities of the club with a forward looking time ahead. Continuing the entertainment at the club in August were four piece live band The Detectives making a very welcome return, which was the perfect birthday present for me as they are one of the best around. They are in fact Brian Poole’s backing band which showed with their oozing quality, songs from the 60’s to present were played excellently with very effective lead vocals and harmonies. The month ended with the trio Crackerjack who were booked back by popular demand. A great show was presented with songs, comedy and various costume changes. The hilarious Andy Pandy routine during the bingo break was an added bonus and they will be back sometime next year. September began with a great paid show featuring Tann-l the superb tribute to Bob Marley singing all of his hits and more with a great stage presentation and personality. There were two really good female singers on the same show making it a non-stop flowing night of tremendous entertainment. Don’t miss this months, it’s a tribute to Take That which proved popular last time. It’s on Friday 22nd and the tickets are now on sale at the club priced only £6. Following that was the first appearance here for Nottingham vocalist Tara Vex who impressed greatly singing songs to suit all ages, going down very well. This young lady can enjoy a fruitful future. I unfortunately missed male/female duo Expressive Harmony but was informed that once again they gave us a good night, still being on stage 15 minutes after they should have been, which is always a very good thing proving they were loved. Next up was the best night we’ve had for a while. We had a special cabaret show with ventriloquist Steve Hewlett and vocalist Neil Warner. The club was full by 7.45 getting even fuller as the night went on. Steve, as you should know, reached the final of this years Britain’s Got Talent and his thorough hilarity and perfect timing featuring many guests all having different voices and pitches showed how unbelievably good he is. Simon Cowell made an appearance and there were a few references made to Britain’s Got Talent throughout the performance. He sat in the audience afterwards signing autographs and posing for photo’s, he was outstanding and deserves every success he will undoubtably enjoy. Neil delivered two fabulous sets with songs from all decades proving to be as popular as ever making it a superb all round show. In my opinion, there aren’t enough shows like this in clubs these days. I can’t understand why as they are always popular and get the tills ringing. I intend to put a few more on in the future and lo and behold, there is another one this month. It’s on Saturday 16th and it’s the welcome return of two of Blackpool’s finest. Comedienne Janice Yorke and vocalist Robert Young. They have both enjoyed another successful Blackpool summer season and the club was packed last time they were here so I suggest you don’t miss out and get here early. The new website is now up and running, www.TheElms.co and it contains many features of the club with forthcoming attractions and any unforeseen changes to the entertainment gets updated immediately, so have a look. See ya next month......... Steve Rushin (Ent Sec)
