The meeting was called to order by Sam Deneault, President at 12:10 p.m. This particular meeting is to honor Patriot Paws, the organization which trains dogs to provide services to Disabled American Veterans. The dogs help Veterans gain physical and emotional independence. Bill Preston had a table set up with a donation cup and literature on the organization. Our goal as a club is to raise $5,000 in order to have the privilege of naming a dog. We were able to reach that goal at this meeting. Thank you to all those who donated money for this endeavor. Bill also asked that we submit names for a dog. This year, as in the past several years, Corvette Legends of Texas has chosen Patriot Paws Service Dogs as the recepient of our charitable donations. Members have devoted many hours into collecting donations for Silent Auctions and Live Auctions in past years. This year members have tried collecting donations at various events, where our club is represented and asked for cash donations from our members. At our July meeting we had a demonstration by David Culwell and one of the Patriot Paws dogs, Jazz. It was the culmination of our year of fundraising. Members generously donated enough funds to bring us to within $289 of our $5,000 goal required to name a service dog. Thanks to Jim Deaton, who upped his contribution to bring us to $5,000. Of course, everyone who donated earlier in the day is to be congratulated for achieving this too! The collections for this year began October 15, 2016 at the Westlake Concours, where Bill Preston collected $1,127. Then members passed out literature, told the story of Patriot Paws and collected donations from spectators at Autorama and the Dallas New Car Show at our club displays. In April, Pate Swap Meet donated a space to Patriot Paws and Legends members, Bill Preston, Gary Williams, Bruce Jarrett, Sam Deneault, Joel Joseph, Don Sebert, Tom Hubbert, Al Macdonald, Larry Dyer and Jerry Echols worked the booth and collected $1,420. Throughout the Spring, Gateway Classic Cars has allowed us to solicit donations and tell the Patriot Paws story during their Cars & Coffee in Grapevine on the last Saturday of each month. They’ve also supported us with donations. All these efforts brought in $325 for the charity. This left us to collect $1,959 from our membership at the July meeting, which you all accomplished!
OuR eFFORTS ARe ONGOiNG Next on Legends’ agenda is Good-Guys Lone Star Nationals at Texas Motor Speedway. They have generously donated space inside the vendor area for a Patriot Paws booth. We are asking Legends members to volunteer to staff the booth Friday, September 29-Sunday, October 1. We will be telling about Patriot Paws, their training program, their impact on Veterans, the prison inmates who train the dogs and receive training themselves, puppy raisers and breeders who furnish dogs well-suited to this endeavor. One of the main things we try to do is tell people about the various Charity Cards they can sign up for at Kroger, Tom Thumb, Amazon Smiles, etc. that don’t cost them a penny, but provide a steady income stream for Patriot Paws. Details are below. Please sign up with Bill Preston (405) 412-0502 to work the booth at Good-Guys that weekend. This is the same weekend as the Lewisville Western Days Car Show on Saturday and the Legends filling the car corral at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday. So, plan ahead and choose the shift you want to work at Good-Guys with the other events in mind. If you are entering a car in Good-Guys, you can drive right in and park near the vendor area. If you’re not entering a car you’ll need to buy a ticket. You’ll have to walk into the infield, ride the shuttle or hitch hike with an exhibitor.
NAMiNG A DOG With our $5,000 donation, we are invited to name a Patriot Paws Service Dog. We are asked to submit two names for a male dog and two for a female. The Veteran also likes to know why the name was chosen. Here are the names that have been submitted by our membership: Axle Billy C.L. Chevy Clooney Corvfefe Damit Duntov D-fer (D for Dog)
