Hello Neighbors! The members of the landscape committee met
recently to assess where we are in terms
of landscape maintenance and improvements. We wanted to let you
know what we've been up to. Points of discussion included the
following:
Performance of the current landscape contractor: Although
drought conditions and watering restrictions have made progress
difficult to measure, we believe Greater Texas has been easy to
work with and done a good job. We are recommending that they be
considered for next year's contract as well, but we are planning to
take bids from at least two other contractors to ensure the best
value for the community. 2009 budget numbers: We propose using
funds remaining in our landscape budget to remove dead trees along
Escarpment and Convict Hill. We submitted a bid for this work to
the Board in June but never received approval. We have recently
resubmitted the bid and hope the Board will move on it soon. We are
proposing that any remaining landscape funds be used to begin
upgrades to the irrigation system required by the City of Austin to
bring it up to current code. Condition of the Easement at
Escarpment and William Cannon: Several members of the committee
expressed concerns about the Board's decision not to replace the
sign at William Cannon and Escarpment and especially about the
suggestion that we might sell this easement. We are definitely
against any attempt to sell the easement as we would give up all
control over the appearance of this main entrance. If the sign is
not replaced, we must come up with a plan to enhance the
landscaping on this highly-visible entrance into the community.

Legendary TimesLandscape Committee- (Continued from Cover
Page)
Landscaping needs for 2010/2011. We agree with the
recommendation of the finance committee of hiring a landscape
design firm to generate a master plan that would guide efforts over
the next several years. We have requested the Board's approval to
contact several landscape design firms to obtain estimates for
generating a master plan.2010 Budget: We submitted a preliminary
two-year budget proposal to the Board prior to the annual HOA
meeting to enable budget planning for 2010. We have requested a
meeting with the Board to review the numbers and discuss priorities
before the 2010 budget is approved.
The member of the landscape committee feel strongly that
landscaping issues directly impact the value of our property as
well as the day-to-day satisfaction level of homeowners in our
neighborhood. We've worked hard to overcome some of the problems
that have caused the look and feel of our neighborhood to decline
over the past several years, and we hope to continue to work with
the support of the Board to improve the appearance of Legend Oaks
2.

tips from a neighborTED: Ideas Worth Spreading
WWW.TED.COMTED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth
Spreading. It
started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people
from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then
its scope has become ever broader.
The mission at TED is to spread ideas. They believe passionately
in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately,
the world. So they’ve built a clearinghouse that offers free
knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers,
and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each
other. The site, launched April 2007, is an ever-evolving work in
progress, and they welcome feedback.
On TED.com, they make the best talks and performances from TED
and partners available to the world, for free. More than 450
TEDTalks are now available, with more added each week. All of the
talks feature closed captions in English, and many feature
subtitles in various languages. These videos are released under a
Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and
reposted.
TEDTalks began as a simple attempt to share what happens at TED
with the world. Under the moniker "ideas worth spreading," talks
were released online. They rapidly attracted a global audience in
the millions. Indeed, the reaction was so enthusiastic that the
entire TED website has been reengineered around TEDTalks, with the
goal of giving everyone on-demand access to the world's most
inspiring voices.
You can subscribe to TEDTalks via RSS or by video podcast on
your iPhone or iPod Touch. Or, you can just visit the site, browse
through the talks, and watch them on your computer at your
convenience.

512-314-5100January Program:Wild Women of the Old West
The Old West was difficult for women. Not all had brave husbands
who provided for them and made the family living. Frontier women
without the protection of a husband or parents were left to do
whatever they could to survive. Many of the men who were outlaws
have become legends with heroic stature. The women outlaws are not
well known, but many had fascinating lives. These are not the
pioneer women with the sunbonnets who organized our churches,
but women who made up their own rules and did what they had to do
to live in a tough and lonely world.
Martha McLain will tell us the stories of these women. Marti's
family has ranched in Sutton Country, Texas for over 100 years.
She is a graduate of the University of Texas, did her graduate
work in American Studies at the University of Texas Permian Basin,
and studied Spanish and archeology in Mexico City and
Guadalajara.
She has held various offices in the Daughters of the Republic of
Texasand was named a Honorary Regent for Life in the Daughters of
the American Revolution. She is the author of Love Letter of the
Old West and April_1, 1902, a columnist, play director (won Best
Direction of a Drama award), and speaker.

I came across Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret
Stohl on the Amazon Editor’s Picks of the top 100 books of
2009…with what appeared to be an intriguing plot and a gorgeous
book cover, I thought I couldn’t go wrong.
I was wrong. This young adult book is about a small town and a
teenage boy, Ethan, who is stuck in it. The town is pretty
stereotypical—nothing changes, people are narrow minded and
everyone knows everyone else’s business.
It seems that ever since his mom’s death, Ethan’s dreams are
filled with a strange girl whom he is trying to save but is
unsuccessful. In comes Lena, the girl whom Ethan has been dreaming
about and who is a supernatural being, along with her hermit uncle
and bizarre family.
During the Civil War, a curse was cast, which will directly
affect Lena on her sixteenth birthday. The countdown begins as
Ethan and Lena together try to save Lena’s future. Does Ethan save
Lena? I won’t
divulge the end, but I will say that all of the effort is
fruitless (not necessarily the outcome, mind you, but the effort,
like the continual skipping of school to research a book that they
think will have the answers they need to reverse the curse. Not the
best example for our young adult audience).
Even with curses, sci-fi details and an introduction to the
vocabulary of the supernatural (Caster, Natural, Witches, Spells…),
the book is full of fluff and is a complete disappointment. This
book doesn’t even compare to the Twilight series.
Lesson learned; don’t judge a book by its cover.Feel free to
comment on this review, your thoughts on the book
or suggest a book for me to review on my blog:
