Martinwas bornin the year316, inSabria(nowHungary).
His fatherwas a soldierof the Roman army...
...and gave himaChristian education.
At age of 15,Martinwent toItaly andjoined theRoman army.Laterhe becamea rich, courageous andpowerful general.
One day,returning back home,he rodeundera strong storm.The rainand the hailfellfuriously, the furious wind howledand thecold seemed tocrush thebones.
In the distancehe sawabeggar, almostnaked,mingledwith thewitheredand blackenedtrunks by the roadside.He wasstretching anarmin search ofsome helpto save himfrom certain death.
When seeing thebeggar,the general felttouched by such misery.So, he brought his horse to a halt, dismountedand affectionately touched the hand of the poor.
Then,he took out thethick, warmcoat thatprotected him andwith a blowof the sword, he divided it intotwo.
He gaveone halfto the beggarandwrapped him upwith therestas best as he can
Despite poorlywrappedandthe torrentialrain, Martinwent on his way, fullof happiness...
Suddenly,the sky wasclear andthe sunof summercame,full of lightand heat.For the three daysthat havelastedthe journey,abrightsunaccompanied the general. It's thesummer ofSt.Martin.
Every yearin November, we arepresented withat leastthreewonderfuldays of sunshine, so that the memoryof men,oftenshort,do not forget thegesture thatsaved the life ofthe beggar.Before leaving, they celebrated Magusto by eating some roasted chestnuts.
