Cloud Computing: Definition

• "cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.“– National Institute of Standards & Technology - 10/2011

5 Essential Characteristics

• On-demand self-service• Rapid elasticity• Resource pooling• Broad network access• Measured serviceHmmm...“sounds a lot like server virtualization…”

What to look for

• Disk based onsite snapshot/backup. Often appliance based. Live usable copy on site.

• Data replicated to cloud-based storage• Potential to simplify/replace existing

backup/replication systems• Virtual server infrastructure available on demand• Consultative assistance in testing

• Design for lack of endpoint control– Endpoints will vary– Reliability and bandwidth vary, stick with Wi-Fi– Server controls QOS

• Merging of consumer based and corporate apps/equipment

• Integrating with proprietary solutions?• Skype• FaceTime• Blackberry Video Chat?

Next Generation VPN’s Zero Configuration Hardware

Past challenges with VPN was that nearly most were software solutions prone to the same challenges as other software on a computer. •Resource competition on the pc.•Driver and hardware compatibility.•Often required elevated privileges to run.•Different versions of software for different OS.•Less support for vendors not base out of Washington. •Required user to initiate the connection. User education.•Education of support staff for use of VPN software.

LegalTech® New York 2012 25

Page 26: LegalTech® New York January 30 – February 1, 2012 Six New Technologies You Should Know About.

Next Generation VPN’s Zero Configuration Hardware

Yes there is Citrix/TS but it has never been 100% the desktop or office

replacement for fulltime workers outside of the office.

•Applications not supported on TS/Citrix (especially now that TS is 64bit only).

•Multiple user environment resource issues.

•General challenges supporting Citrix/TS environments.

(External device issues such as printers & scanners on clients)

•Multiple licensing costs (CALS).

VDI addresses many of these issues, but costs are just transferred from one

bucket to another and can even add to complexity in some environments.

Solution is still very software dependent and doesn’t address those concerns.

Astaro RED (now Sophos)

• Astaro RED (Remote Ethernet Device) is a comprehensive security gateway device which does not require local setup or technical skills at the remote site.

• The configuration is completed at the central office and is automatically distributed to all Astaro RED appliances.

• Scalable. Allows for mass roll-out scenarios and unrestricted amount of users per device.

• Only limited to the power of the hardware.• Allows for the enforcement of network security policies.• Zero configuration done onsite. Nothing to tamper with.• Ties to Astaro Secure Gateway UTM appliance for full security features

and management. (Web Filter, Stateful Inspection, IDS/IPS and QoS).

Wireless? Meraki Access Points

• MR12/MR16/MR24 AP’s with Cloud Controller.

• Wireless VPN, zero configuration onsite.

• Remote APs automatically establish a persistent, secure Layer 2 IPSec

tunnel back to a Meraki virtual concentrator (vm) running on a server at

headquarters.

• Meraki wireless networks eliminate the need for a wireless LAN controller at

headquarters. Now, integration of site-to-site VPN functionality into the

access point.

• Combination of a built-in stateful firewall, NAC and web filters further

reduces the number of hardware appliances needed in the home or branch

office yet still maintain corporate level policies and security in place.

• Zero configuration done onsite.

LegalTech® New York 2012 28

Page 29: LegalTech® New York January 30 – February 1, 2012 Six New Technologies You Should Know About.

How about no network at all?Meraki Cloud Routers

• Great for remote users, branch offices or war rooms.• Users can now connect any device to remote network and

work natively on a pc. • Nothing to configure remotely, reducing IT staff overhead

and travel burdens. • Excellent backup DR/BC solution for primary data circuits. • Full Layer 7 firewall, NAC, and web filtering.• Packet shaping and priority path routing for VOIP and other

sensitive traffic.

LegalTech® New York 2012 29

Page 30: LegalTech® New York January 30 – February 1, 2012 Six New Technologies You Should Know About.

Benefits• Leveraging cheaper Internet (i.e.. Less than $300/mo. for 50Mb to 100Mb

Internet) means for greater flexibility and options than traditional Layer 3 network access designs.

• Zero configuration devices rely on less IT staff to manage, maintain and deploy devices.

• Addresses the BYOD plague that is challenging many businesses today.• Software/OS/device independence. • Less items to license and maintain.• Better/native workspaces for users who are outside of the main office. • Leverage any WAN optimization technologies already in use. • Disaster Recovery redundancy become simple to deploy and manage.• Empower the mobile worker with “office anywhere”.

Page 31: LegalTech® New York January 30 – February 1, 2012 Six New Technologies You Should Know About.

Recap

• New hardware technologies are available to address secure remote

access needs either temporary or persistent.

• Hardware independent - PC’s, iPad’s or network routers.

• Nothing for remote user to configure.

• All centrally managed in the main office. No IT travel.

• Better, more flexible workspaces for remote workers.

• Endless DR/BC integration capabilities.

• Possible reduction in costs when replacing licensed software or

traditional networking technologies (T1 –MPLS).
