Old Advance Article Tells Of Bellport ' s 7893 Hooker By Thomas R. Bay les The following account of the dedication of the Bellport Hook and Ladder Company is taken from The Patchogue Advance for November 24 , 1893 . "The boys of the Pa tchogue Hook and Ladder Co., about 25 strong, with their truck , were met at Dunton by the handsome com- pany of the Bellport Hook and Ladder boys with their new truck , and headed by the band and es- corted by a torch light brigade marched on to Bellport. After a short stop at the truck house, the procession moved down Bell- port Ave . and back again to the truck house, after which the fire- men repaired to Woodruff's Hall where seats had been reserved for them. "The hall was packedwithover 300 pecpl e and the musical pro- gramme was executed with all the skill and grace characteristic of Bellport' s talented musicians. "Chief Edwin Bailey of Pa t- chogue , in presenting the new truck to the firemen on behalf of the peopl e of Bellport , compli- mented both the people of Bell- port and the firemen, by saying that the former were worthy of praise for making possibl e the formation of the company and the firemen were worthy of equal praise for rallying so heartily to the work before them. "Foreman Everett M. Price, or. receiving the truck on behal f of the company, thanked the people for the confidence reposed In the volunteer firemen, and hoped the organization of the fire company was the beginning of greater things for the village. "Rev. Frisbie made a speech and presented a fine silver trum- pet to the fire company on behalf of the manufacturers of the hand- some modern equipped truck. "A fter cheering the closing words of Mr . Drinker the audi- ence repaired to the new truck house where the ladies of the vil- lage served a delicious and boun- tiful lunch was served to everyone. . This expression of hospitality went right to the hearts and stomachs of the Patchogue boys. Their only regret was that it was not in good form to eat the wait- ers , as they certainly did look good enough and sweet enough to satisfy any epicurean taste. "While the people of Bellport are congratulating themselves on the possession of a welj equipped and well manned Hook and Ladder Co., the time may come when they will see the heroic efforts of the young men save their village from total destruction . The editor of the Advance counts himself honored in being permitted to make the acquaintance of such gentlemanly brother firemen. "The officers of the new Are company are Everett M. Price, foreman; Barney King, asst. fore- man; Charles H. Hawkins, secre- tary, and John H. Weidner, trea- surer. " _________ SWEARING IN new officer s of the Central Brookhaven Republican Club is District Court Judge Morton Weissman at left. In announcing the contest re- sults, die company said Cindy and Miriam will each receive two World ' s Fair tickets, two LIRR tickets to the World' s Fair and $5 spending money. The contest topic was , 'What the Patchogue Ambulance Means to My Com- munity.' Cindy Klelnm-n ' s essay fol- lows: "The Patchogue Ambulance makes us feel saf e and secure. It makes us feel that part of our worry vanishes because in case we get sick , the Ambu- lance takes us to the hospital quickly. "Without the Patchogue Am- bulance we' d have difficulty In transportation and people may die. The Ambulance crew saves many lives since many times it is a matter of life and death. "Men who volunteer to be am- bulance frivers are appreciated b y the people of the community. If every town or community had an ambulance life Patchogue has. we would all be very secure. ' Miriam Gelfer *s essay follows: "Speeding through traffic, darting down side streets, help- ing someone in distress---t _is Is what the volunteers who drive die Ambulance do. "Whetherjfit is a Are or an accident you can be sure the Patchogue Ambulance will get mere and in a hurry. " People should think highly of these men. Our family does , be- cause last year they helped save the life of my brother. "For this and for saving the lives of others in my commun- ity, I think Patchogue should set aside a day to honor these men who so unselfishly devote them- selves to the community in time of distress.
