ear Families of Palm Beach Day Academy,

Since becoming Head of School-elect in October, I have been consistently impressed and energized by meeting with students and faculty on both campuses, staff, parents, Trustees, alumni throughout the country, and wonderful supporters of this great school. During these nine months, I have spent a significant amount of time participating in what I have termed, “Engagement Sessions,” with members of this community—leading with questions, listening carefully, and being a visible presence on both campuses so that I can learn what I need to know to lead Palm Beach Day Academy into the future.

I am excited and inspired by all that I see. Our students are highly engaged and passionate about learning, working

and playing; faculty consistently push boundaries in curriculum development, engage students in critical thinking, and care deeply about the social and emotional well-being of each child; and our staff continue to bring their expertise and professionalism to all the resources of our school. In addition, the parent community, Board of Trustees, and alumni are very supportive, graciously providing their time, energy, and resources to the school each and every day. In short, Palm Beach Day Academy is in a

position of strength with immense achievement across a broad horizon due in large part to the outstanding leadership provided by Becky and the Board of Trustees. With that said, however, we have an opportunity at this moment in the history of our school to examine our aspirations, articulate our goals, identify strengths and areas for growth, and set our priorities as we look toward the future.

As your new Head of School for the 2016-2017 academic year, I invite you to join me in September as we look toward the future and challenge ourselves to pursue an

ambitious shared vision called Agenda for

Commencement June 10, 2016

For many of Palm Beach Day Academy’s 8th and 9th Graders, Commencement Day marks a major transition in their lives. On

the morning of Commencement, June 10, 2016, these students spent their last time together as a group. Some have shared their entire lives with these friends and even those who have joined more recently feel the same bond. They know that, even though there will be times when parts of the group may reassemble momentarily, there will probably never be a time when they will all be together again. The teachers who mingle with students know the same thing. These teachers, along with their parents, have raised these students and know them well. Their shared memory of hundreds of moments of growth, frustration, triumph, embarrassment, and success bonds them. They, too, will not see these children together again. But, although sadness was part of the day for students and adults, excitement about the future was even stronger. This was the day that everyone had worked toward. Now it had arrived and all of those shared lives - students, teachers, parents, grandparents and friends - assembled in the Halmos Center to honor our 8th & 9th Graders and all that their years at PBDA represent. After the students and faculty had marched into the auditorium, Dr. van der Bogert opened the ceremony with a welcome. Ninth Grader Allegra Treves gave the Invocation. Dr. Van then called the winners of the Academic Book Prizes to the stage (See Outstanding Students, page 4). Book Prizes are awarded to those students the faculty view as outstanding in each of the offered subjects. To earn a Book Prize, a student must have one of the highest averages in a particular subject, and must also have impressed the teacher with his or her enthusiasm, interest and perseverance. Dr. van der Bogert then honored ten faculty members for their years of service to Palm Beach Day Academy (See box, page 5). Jim Gramentine was honored with the 11th annual presentation of the Adele Shook Merck Excellence in Teaching Award. Presentation of the Cup Awards followed. Palm Beach Day Academy’s Cup Awards are indicators of the personal qualities valued by the school. The Upper School 5th & 6th and 7th - 9th Grade Improvement Prizes were established by the school to recognize the students who have shown the most overall growth as students and as school citizens. Katherine Justice received this year’s 7 - 9th Grade Improvement Prize. Taylor Handley was awarded the 5th & 6th Grade Improvement Prize. The Fletcher Hunt Memorial Cup was

presented to the school in Fletcher Hunt’s memory by Colonel and Mrs. Robert F. Hunt, Jr. It was the wish of the Colonel and Mrs. Hunt that, for the first year, the

cup be awarded to the student in the 6th Grade who attained the highest scholastic average, and that each subsequent year it be awarded one grade higher. It would accompany Fletcher’s class through the school, culminating in its presentation to a senior in June, 1967. After that date, it returned to the 6th Grade as a permanent award. Carter Levine received the Fletcher Hunt Memorial Cup for 2016. The Chapin Cup is presented at Graduation to the 5th or 6th Grader who, in the opinion of the faculty, has made the greatest over-all contributions to his or her school and classmates. In awarding the cup, the faculty considers the student’s academic, athletic, service and school spirit contributions. Sixth Grader, Carter Levine, was awarded the 2016 Chapin Cup. The Essay Cup was donated to the school by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Jose in honor of their daughter Polly, a former PBDA student. The Cup is to encourage good writing among the students in the Upper School, and is awarded to the students who have submitted the most outstanding educational autobiography, research paper and character sketch during the year. The Katie Tummon ‘03 Educational Autobiography award went to Sophia Lloyd George, Logan Emmer & Max Ferragamo Bal. The award for Character Sketch went to Gustavo Maduro Vollmer.

The Robert W. Bayless Scholar/Athlete Award was established by the Bayless family in memory of Robert Bayless, Director of Athletics and Chairman of the English Department from 1958 until his death in 1973. The award recognizes an outstanding student in the Upper School for a combination of Honor Roll academics and athletic endeavor. Lily Kino and Roger Patton Janssen were the recipients

of the Scholar/Athlete Award this year. The Faculty Cup was donated anonymously by a parent who wished to provide a high academic goal for the school’s superior students. It is awarded

each year to the Upper School student with the highest academic average for the year, provided the average is 90 or above. Caroline McCann earned the Faculty Cup this year. The 1958 Cup was established by the Class of 1958 to be awarded to the Upper School student who

has set an outstanding example for his or her classmates. This award embodies such qualities

as responsibility and willingness to serve, concern for others, personal integrity, and excellence in citizenship, scholarship and sportsmanship. Roger Patton Janssen was presented with the 1958 Cup. PBDA Hatching Ceremony September 2015Several PBDA alumni joined new students at the beginning of the school year on the upper campus and lower campus to cheer them on as they opened “eggs” to discover whether they were Pelicans or Flamingos. This fun, new tradition is an excellent way for former and new students alike to celebrate their allegiance to the yellow and blue!

PBDA Pet Show is here to stay! The beloved Pet Show was a hit once again this year, with pets and people filling the east field of the Seaview campus. The judging was performed by our very own PBDA alumni and a good time was had by all.

Alumni Tug-O-WarIt was a record turnout for the Pelican vs. Flamingo alumni tug-of-war at Field Day this year. The Pelicans tugged to victory and proudly waved the blue flag in celebration of their first win.

New York City Alumni Event April 20th, 2016We would like to thank Emilia Fanjul Pfeifler ’90 once again for hosting the PBDA New York City Alumni and Friends reception. Candice Koch Postel ’90 and Christina Murphy Pisa ’86 were co-hostesses and it was a delightful evening. The event was a wonderful opportunity for old friends and classmates to catch up with one another, to bid farewell to Dr. Van der Bogert before she retires this July and to meet our to incoming headmaster, Dr. Edwin Gordon. Thank you to all who attended!

the Future: Strategic Priorities for 2016-2019 – Academic Excellence, Faculty Development, Lower Campus Facility Improvements, and Partnership Opportunities – that will move PBDA to a higher level of excellence and prepare our students for a life of leadership, intellectual curiosity, and service to their communities. This vision will also secure our place at the forefront of educating students in PK-9th grade. These priorities are a distillation of ideas gathered during months of listening sessions with the entire school community, and they will serve as our roadmap going forward over the next two to three years.

Agenda for the Future: Strategic Priorities for

2016-2019

Priority I. Academic ExcellenceIt is important we increase the quality of education our students receive PK-9th grade, continue to strengthen the curriculum in key areas, and ensure students are provided with the kinds of competencies that are needed in the world today and in the future: reading, research, writing, logic, reasoning skills, data analysis, problem solving, and communication skills. This strategic priority will be accomplished through the launching of a Curriculum Renewal Initiative that will begin in fall 2016, with a specific focus on examining the Science curriculum and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math) programs. To be sure our students can face the world of the 21st Century and beyond, we must be certain our curriculum continues to support the mission and purpose of the school and is aligned throughout the school. Priority II. Faculty DevelopmentWe are fortunate to have on our faculty many extraordinary women and men whose talents and dedication make our school as strong as it is. In order to continue delivering an excellent academic program, an excellent faculty is important to this mission. With that in mind, we will commence a Faculty Renewal Initiative that will focus on recruiting and developing the next group of great teachers; promoting systems that will support, retain, and sustain an already outstanding faculty on the two campuses; and provide professional development opportunities to support the intellectual life of each faculty member. To achieve our ambitious goals in faculty development, we must also provide a “space”

throughout the school year when teachers can come together to inquire about, explore and reflect upon teaching and learning as a collaborative process. Such an effort will ensure our faculty remains engaged and innovative, as well as continues to enrich teaching and learning for our school community.

Priority III. Lower Campus Facilities Improvement

We owe it to our current and future students as well as faculty on the Lower Campus to have physical spaces that better reflect the way early childhood students learn,

play, and interact with peers and adults. In addition, we must have the infrastructure on this campus that will encourage our faculty to continue unleashing their creativity and innovation so that students will approach learning through experimentation, curiosity and wonder. Therefore, it’s critical we make a strong commitment and personal gift to the successful completion of the Great Expectations Capital Campaign in order to have the resources to begin and complete construction of the Education Center on the Lower Campus. With support of the Campaign, we shall be able to provide a new academic facility that offers flexible learning spaces where students can explore, discover and collaborate in creative ways. Our students will also realize expanded teaching and learning opportunities in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math) so they can create and design engineering-based projects or choose robotics, as well as many other programs using technological tools yet to be conceived. Finally, with support of the Campaign we will see new programs inspired by teachers for our youngest students that are more experiential

and project-based, and involve problem-solving, collaboration and investigation which are the essential tools for the 21st Century.

Priority IV. Partnership OpportunitiesWe are fortunate to be one school with two very strong and distinctive campuses that serve the developmental needs of its respective student populations. We must continue to look for opportunities to promote those strengths through partnerships within and outside the school community, collaboration, shared vision, and through shared work. Our plan going forward, therefore, is to look for ways to have richer partnerships between students and faculty on both campuses that will bring us together around teaching and learning, and other common enterprises. In addition, we will build strategic partnerships next year with organizations throughout the community that have complementary strengths and similar values, and who will bring power to the important work we are developing on behalf of our students, curriculum, and teachers.

ConclusionYes, this agenda is meant to be very ambitious—as any plan for Palm Beach Day Academy should be—building on what we have done well with the acknowledgement that great schools like ours constantly need to innovate and adapt to the changing landscape of education for young people. In approaching this task, I take great pride in knowing we are guided and energized not only by the achievements of our storied past, but also by the enormous strengths of this supportive school community. I would appreciate knowing any questions or comments you may have regarding our agenda. Feel free to send those to [email protected]. In closing, I am excited about the opportunity to get to know you and your child(ren) next school year, and look forward to our brilliant future together. Thank you for supporting our school, and I wish for your family a wonderful summer vacation. See you in September!

My very best wishes,

Dr. Edwin P. Gordon Head of Palm Beach Day Academy

THE CAMPAIGN FOR PALM BEACH DAY ACADEMY

From our ceremonial groundbreaking on May 10th to the first day of demolition on June 20th, it has been evident that

Palm Beach Day Academy’s future is being built. The work being done now on the Lower Campus has taken years of persistent effort, enthusiasm and generous support from our PBDA families, administration, faculty and trustees. This summer, the former Unity Church Building and the Administration/Pre-Primary building have been demolished. There will also be infrastructure work

completed, including building new roads and laying electrical lines below ground before the children return in September. Our future is bright! We strive to provide the very best academic programs for our children, and we are fortunate to have a faculty that continues to develop professionally. Our community partnerships enrich the lives of our students, and our commitment to building state-of-the-art facilities will help to promote discovery, exploration and intellectual curiosity within our students.

Together for our ChildrenCynthia KanaiDirector of Development

The one thing that sets us apart from other schools is that we are a true family school. Our PBDA families enthusiastically show up to support their children at every game, performance, speech, and assembly. Our Pelican and Flamingo families support our Annual Fund and the Building Campaign because they know that in order to have ongoing excellence, it takes every single family’s commitment.

Thank you for your commitment to excellence…..Together For Our Children.

Alumni SpotlightHonorable Judge robin l. rosenberg ‘76

It is a rare privilege to call a United States District Court Judge one of our own. With this in mind, we are proud

and delighted to highlight the Honorable Judge Robin L. Rosenberg, class of 1976, in this Alumni Spotlight edition of The Bridge. Not only did Robin attend Palm Beach Day Academy (formerly Palm Beach Day School) along with her two brothers, Gary and Jamie, but her three children, Sydney ‘11 , Madison ‘14 and Adin ‘17 have also attended Palm Beach Day Academy and are each soaring to great heights along their life paths.

Robin was nominated by President Obama in 2014 and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate as a Federal District Court Judge in the Southern District of Florida. Robin held a number of distinguished positions before she became a United States District Court Judge. Upon graduation from law school, she was a clerk with the Honorable James C. Paine (Jonathan Paine’s father), who was a United States District Court Judge in the same courthouse and chambers where Robin now works. Following her clerkship, she was a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division, Employment Litigation Section of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) where she traveled around the country litigating cases on behalf of the United States government against state and local governmental entities that discriminated against individuals in their employment based on race, gender, ethnicity and disability. From 1993-1994, Robin took a leave of absence from the DOJ to join her husband, Michael McAuliffe, in the Czech Republic where, through a program called the Civic Education Project, they established and taught in a new law school and graduate school in public administration at Zapadoceska Universita (University of West Bohemia) in Pilsen, Czech Republic. When Robin returned to the U.S., she continued to work for the DOJ until she and Michael moved to Florida in 1994. Since her return to Florida, Robin has worked as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of West Palm Beach, been a partner at the law firm Holland & Knight, been Vice President and General Counsel for Slim-Fast Foods Company and was the co-founder and partner in the law firm of Rosenberg & McAuliffe and the mediation firm, ARC

Mediation. She became a state court judge in 2007 in the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit in Palm Beach County and served there until her 2014 Federal appointment to the life tenured position, which she now holds.

When you think back on the time you spent at Palm Beach Day School, now Palm Beach Day Academy, what memories come to mind?

When I look back at the time I spent at Palm Beach Day School, the memories that come to mind are: getting picked up each morning by the bus that Mr. Robert Bayless drove, taking Mr. Greco’s classes and thinking I will never be able to hear a grammatically incorrect word spoken again without cringing (and that does happen), writing lots of essays and giving many speeches in Mr. Greco’s classes, loving the school sports program and the coaching that Mrs. Rafter provided to us, getting ready for Field Day (my very favorite day of the year) and pulling a muscle each year doing the high jump (which no longer exits), reading about our sports’ accomplishments and seeing our pictures that Mr. Lee Daniels took in the local paper, the annual sports banquet at Nandos, carpooling with Mrs. Willis (our third grade teacher) when she moved into our neighborhood (which was particularly exciting since Michelle Willis was my best friend at school) and feeling safe and happy going to school each day. The most valuable aspects of our school is that children receive a well-rounded education and are challenged to do their very best while not fearing failure because the environment is safe and supportive. The school prepares students well to launch into the world just a little bit smarter, a little more confident and a little more curious.

Where did you continue your education after PBDS?

After PBDS, I continued my education at Phillips Academy Andover from 1976-1979, Princeton University (B.A.) from 1979-1983 and Duke University (J.D. and M.A.) from 1985-1989.

When did you know your interest in the law would lead you to be a judge?

There was not one particular moment in time when I knew that my interest in the law would lead me to become a judge. Becoming a judge was never an identifiable goal or a dream of mine. Rather, at each stage of my career, I have tried to do my best, find meaning in my work and make a positive and lasting contribution. Each new professional position that I have held, and there have been many, has evolved from the experiences that preceded that position. The insights that I have gained through my education, work and life experiences, cumulatively, led me on a path in which I sought and obtained a state judicial position through a non-partisan election process in Palm Beach County in 2006. After serving as a state court judge in the civil, criminal and foreclosure divisions of the court for over seven years, this same path, with the newly acquired skills and knowledge that I gained as a state court judge, led me to apply for a federal judgeship which resulted in the current life tenured position that I hold.

Can you tell us what it’s been like to be a Federal Judge?

I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as a Federal Judge. The work is vitally important to our system of government. I serve with wonderful, experienced and talented colleagues and a top quality staff of attorneys and administrative personnel and together, we try to manage the heavy criminal and civil caseload that comprises the docket of a Federal Judge. Each case demands thoughtfulness and attention as the stakes are high for the litigants and in most instances, it is the party’s only opportunity to be heard in the judicial system. My role as a Federal judge allows me to serve the community in which I was raised and have raised my own family. While not everyone in the community has dealings with the judicial branch of government, I believe it is important that there is a perception, as well as the reality, that the system is fair, impartial and independent from the other branches of government. I work hard to make sure everyone feels he/she has been treated fairly, matters are ruled upon in a timely manner and everyone is afforded respect. The job demands an array of skill sets and the cases are very diverse. All of this contributes to a job that constantly is challenging me and allowing me to grow as a person as well as a judge.

When time permits, what do you enjoy doing? Hobbies?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family. My parents live in the community and up until recently, we have had all three children here. This is another full-time job but the most rewarding one of all. In order

to keep in mental and physical shape, I love to exercise: running, paddle boarding, yoga and swimming. I grew up as an avid tennis player but have not made the time for tennis as much over recent years. I also enjoy traveling with my family and spending time in our favorite places in Telluride, Colorado and on Martha’s Vineyard. I suspect that as the children get older and all of them go off to school, I will continue to find new hobbies outside of work to keep me and busy and fulfilled.

What advice would you give the current students at Palm Beach Day Academy?

The advice I would share with current students at Palm Beach Day Academy is to make the most of each moment – work hard, set goals and try to accomplish them to the best of your ability, explore what your passions may be in school and outside of school and of course, have fun along the way. Unfortunately, students are under far greater pressures today than when I was a student at Palm Beach Day School. There is so much emphasis on doing things so one can build a good resume or get into a good school or get a good job. It is not to say these are not practical and important aspects of one’s growth and development, but there is so much more to life than focusing on pursuits primarily to set oneself up for the next stage in life. The greatest joys and mystery of life are precisely that one shouldn’t have to know at every stage what comes next. If you live in the moment, do a good job in every endeavor and try to make a positive contribution, doors will open and opportunities will present themselves; and, the ride will be equally as meaningful as the landing point. I have found that many of the words spoken by Steve Jobs echo my views on how to try to live your life and best reflect the advice I would give to PBDA students. First, Mr. Jobs said that “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Mr. Jobs also said that, “you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” Students at PBDA are well prepared to do anything they want in life. You’ve been given the gifts of a great education, remarkable teachers and a nurturing and empowering environment. Take these gifts and use them well.
