Critical Design

Critical Design takes a critical theory based approach to design.

This kind of design uses design fiction

and speculative design proposals to challenge assumptions about the role

objects play in everyday life.


It is probably the desire to get back into society to create an art for everyone and not just the chosen few with bags of money. Artists want to recover the public that has long ago deserted the art galleries, and to break the closed circle of Artist-Dealer-Critic-Gallery-Collector.

Problem

Our world has bigger issues! We can use design as a means of speculating how things could be – speculative design.

Even the more expressive forms of design are about solving aesthetic problems


This form of design thrives on imagination and aims to open up new perspectives on what are sometimes called “wicked problems”, to create spaces for discussion and debate about alternative ways of being, and to inspire and encourage people’s imagination to flow freely. Design speculations can act as a catalyst for collectively redefining our relationship to reality.

Your Body of Water


Can we use biofeedback to get more in touch with

our bodies?

Instead of seeing the data and comparing it (is my pulse healthy/

normal, etc?) can biofeedback be used for subjective experience and to get you in touch

with how you are feeling?


Your Body of Water

A project that explores the subjectivity of biofeedback, and how you are feeling. The more lively your heart, the more lively the water. The faster it beats, the faster the speed of the water.

As your heart rate increases: •  The water spins faster •  The circle of water gets larger •  The sounds of waves get louder

Improvements Needed from User Testing & Next Steps •  Circle reminds people of “The Ring”

horror film (not relaxing!) •  Arduino pulse sensor is good for

prototyping but not accurate (if you have cold hands your pulse could be 140-200!)
