Lesson name: Map Skills for First Grade Grade: First Rationale:The student must become familiar with maps, as they are a very important part of life. They are used frequently by businesses, and the service industry. Goal: The student will develop an understanding of what a map is, and how to use it. The student will proficiently be able to read simple maps. The student will be able to draw their own map, and support all placements.Standards addressed: Social Studies – First Grade, pg. 30 – “3. develop Map Skills”

Objectives:

The student will describe what a map contains.

The student will show how to use a map.

The student will organize keys to a map.

The student will compute distance on a map.

The student will create their own map.

The student will support their decisions for placements of markers on their self-made maps.

Activities:

1. Kids' Road Atlas, by Rand McNally - This book contains state maps, travel games, and word puzzles. The children may use this book as an activity book for many different hands-on map skills activities.

Map Skills – Lesson Plan Continued2. GEOSafari: School Model - This is an electronic game with two-sided quiz cards used to make drill fun. All cards are sold seperately. The sets come in various age ranges, although not advertised in the magazine. (I have this game, and cards for children as young as preschool.) The first grade map card set would be purchased. The "Make your own packet" of 10 blank cards would also be purchased so the children could make their own cards for a learning activity, or an assessment.

3. Inflatable Globe – Topographical - This inflatable globe can be used for many different activities. For example, a circle time activity where the children toss the globe to a friend in the circle and the tosser asks where the North Pole is, or which way is north.

4. “I’m Thinking Of. . . “ – This activity can be performed in the classroom, playground, cafeteria, and even field trips. It can be done just about anywhere, with or without materials.

5. “A Continental Approach to Reading” – This activity relates literature to geography by having the reader find the setting for the stories they read on a map.

Map Skills – Lesson Plan Continued“Where in the Classroom?” - This activity has the students trying to find the location of the missing treasure in the classroom. The students use the teacher-made map of the classroom with “X” marking the spot of the missing treasure. As the students master this version change it. Begin giving written, and verbal, directions to find the treasure for them to mark the “X” on their copy of the map.

Adaptations for Possible Problem spots / GT – Spec Ed:

The GT students may have an additional research project to do. Language problems may exist for some students that have not yet been discovered. Try to be real clear about what is being said. Use check lists for each activity to aid in comprehension.

Assessment: The student will create their own map. All placements will be explained, and supported.

Map Skills - Software1. Candyland - CD $4.95

This program is for children ages 3 and up. The student will travel around a map of Candyland to experience six different activities, return to the castle to save King Candy, and return candy to the candy store. This will be a great program for children with learning disabilities, and/or who have had little or no computer experience.

2. Kid Pix Deluxe 3, by Broderbund $46.95

This program is a creative way for children to use a computer to create their own maps, or any designs their heart desires. This will be great to use as an learning and assessment tool.

3. Maptastic Voyage: Explore the World of Map Making and Geography $19.95

This CD-ROM is for grades 1-5. The child sees what appears to be a steering wheel and dash board, and must proceed to drive the vehicle through the map. It also contains "make a map" where the children can make their own maps. This would be used as a learning activity, and an assessment tool.

• remove the land masses (green), with the name labels (yellow & pink)still attached to them, and replace them without looking at a map.

• then, remove the name labels from the land masses and replace them with out looking at a map.

• finally, remove both the name labels from the land masses, and the land masses from the board, and replace all without looking at a map.
