This book is one of two volumes for the proceedings of the 18th internationalConference on Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns (CAIP 2019), which washeld in Salerno, Italy, during September 3–5, 2019.
CAIP is a series of biennial international conferences devoted to all aspects ofcomputer vision, image analysis and processing, pattern recognition, and related fields.Previous conferences were held in Ystad, Valletta, York, Seville, Münster, Vienna,Paris, Groningen, Warsaw, Ljubljana, Kiel, Prague, Budapest, Dresden, Leipzig,Wismar, and Berlin.
The conference included a main track held during September 3–5 at the Grand HotelSalerno in the center of the city of Salerno. The conference hosted four keynote talksprovided by world-renowned experts: James Ferryman (University of Reading, UK)gave a talk on “Biometrics and Surveillance on the Move: Vision for Border Security,”Luc Brun (ENSICAEN, France) on “Graph Classification,” Gian Luca Marcialis(University of Cagliari, Italy) on “Fingerprint Presentation Attacks Detection: from the“loss of innocence” to the “International Fingerprint Liveness Detection” competition,”and Nicolai Petkov (University of Groningen, The Netherlands) on “Representationlearning with trainable COSFIRE filters.”
The scientific program of the conference was extended with satellite events held atthe University of Salerno on the day before and after the main event. In particular, twotutorials on “Contemporary Deep Learning Models and their Applications,” by AdityaNigam and Arnav Bhavsar (Indian Institute of Technology Mandi) and on “ActiveObject Recognition: a survey of a (re-)emerging domain,” by Francesco Setti(University of Verona, Italy) were given on September 2; while on September 6 we hada contest entitled “Which is Which? - Evaluation of local descriptors for imagematching in real-world scenarios,” organized by Fabio Bellavia and Carlo Colombo(University of Florence, Italy), together with two workshops, namely “Deep-learningbased computer vision for UAV,” by Hamideh Kerdegari and Manzoor Razaak(Kingston University, UK) and Matthew Broadbent (Lancaster University, UK), and“Visual Computing and Machine Learning for Biomedical Applications,” by SaraColantonio and Daniela Giorgi (ISTI-CNR, Italy) and Bogdan J. Matuszewski (UCLan,UK).
The program covered high-quality scientific contributions in deep learning, 3Dvision, biomedical image and pattern analysis, biometrics, brain-inspired methods, document analysis, face and gestures, feature extraction, graph-based methods,high-dimensional topology methods, human pose estimation, image/video indexingand retrieval, image restoration, keypoint detection, machine learning for image andpattern analysis, mobile multimedia, model-based vision, motion and tracking, objectrecognition, segmentation, shape representation and analysis, and vision for robotics.
The contributions for CAIP 2019 were selected based on a minimum of two, butmostly three reviews. Among 183 submissions, 106 were accepted with an acceptancerate of 58%.
We are grateful to the Steering Committee of CAIP for giving us the honor oforganizing this reputable conference in Italy. We thank the International Associationfor Pattern Recognition (IAPR) that endorsed the conference, Springer that offered thebest paper award, and the Italian Association for Computer Vision, Pattern Recognitionand Machine Learning (CVPL) that offered the CVPL prize assigned to a youngresearcher, author of the best paper presented the conference. We thank the Universityof Salerno for the sponsorship and, specifically, its Department of Computer andElectrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics, also SAST Gmbh, A.I. Tech srl, andAI4Health srl as gold sponsors, and Nexsoft spa, Gesan srl, and Hanwha TechwinEurope Ltd. as silver sponsors.
We thank the authors for submitting their valuable works to CAIP; this is of primeimportance for the success of the event. However, the success of a conference alsodepends on a number of volunteers. We would like to thank the reviewers and theProgram Committee members for their excellent work. We also thank the localOrganizing Committee and all the other volunteers who helped us organize CAIP 2019.
We hope that all participants had a pleasant and fruitful stay in Salerno.
