Illinois - a state in the US Midwest, also called the Prairie State. Its largest city is Chicago and its capital city is Springfield. Total Area is 57,918 sq mi and the 21st USA State. Became Union State December 3,1818. Manufacturing industry is important and the state produces coal, oil and agricultural products. Illinois became a state in 1818 and is associated with Abraham Lincoln, who was a lawyer in Springfield.

Indiana - a US state in the Middle West which is both agricultural and industrial. It became a state in 1816. Its popular name is the Hoosier State, but nobody knows why. People from Indiana are called Hoosiers, and Americans sometimes joke that they are innocent, old-fashioned farmers. Indianapolis is the capital city and the largest in the state. Total Area is 36,418 sq mi and 19th USA State.

Iowa - a US state in the Middle West. Its popular name is the Hawkeye State, and people from Iowa are called Hawkeyes, probably after Chief Black Hawk, a Native American Leader. Iowa was part of the Louisiana Purchase and became a state in 1846. Iowa is known for its agriculture, and it is the largest producer of corn, soya beans, and pigs in the US. Des Moines is the capital and largest city. Total Area is 56,272 sq mi and 29th USA State. Became Union State December 28,1846.

Kansas - a US state in the Middle West, the most central of all the states. It forms part of the Great Plains and suffered badly during the Dust Bowl years. Its popular name is the Sunflower State. The capital city is Topeka, and the largest cities are Wichita, Overland Park and Kansas City. Kansas was part of the Louisiana Purchase and became a state in 1861. Its main products include wheat, corn, cattle, oil, salt and helium (= a gas used to fill balloons and to freeze things). Total Area is 82,277 sq mi and 34th USA State. Became Union State January 29,1861.

Kentucky - a south-eastern US state, also known as the Bluegrass State. The capital city is Frankfort, and the largest city is Lexington-Fayette. It produces agricultural products, coal and whiskey and is well known for breeding horses for racing. Its tourist attractions include the place where Abraham Lincoln was born and Mammoth Cave national Park, a World Heritage Site since 1981. Largest city is Louisville. Total Area is 40,409 sq mi and 15th USA State. Became Union State June 1,1792.

Louisiana - a southern US state on the Gulf of Mexico, also known as the Pelican State. It consists mainly of flat land and is separated from the state of Mississippi by the Mississippi River. The largest city is New Orleans and the capital city is Baton Rouge. It was part of the Louisiana Purchase, became a state in 1837, and was one of the Confederate States. Louisiana is known for its Cajun culture. The state produces oil, gas, salt, rice and sugar. Total Area is 51,885 sq mi and 18th USA State. Became Union State April 30,1812.

Maine - the most northerly of the New England states in the US. Its popular name is the Pine Tree State, and people from Maine are called Down Easters. The capital city is Augusta and the largest city is Portland. Maine was separated from Massachusetts in 1820 as a free state under the Missouri Compromise. It is a popular area for outdoor holidays and sports, and the northern end of the Appalachian Trail is in Maine. Maines products include paper, apples, blueberries and canned sardines. Total Area is 33,414 sq mi and 23rd USA State. Became Union State March 15,1820

Maryland - an eastern state of the US on the Atlantic Ocean. It is also known as the Old Line State and the Free State. The largest city is Baltimore, and the capital city is Annapolis. Maryland was one of the original 13 states and gave some of its land to create Washington, DC. Tourists visit the Harpers Ferry national historical Park and the Goddard Space Flight Center. Among the states products are electronic equipment, wood and fish. Total Area is 12,407 sq mi and 7th USA State. Became Union State April 28,1788.

Massachusetts - a north-eastern US state in New England, also known informally as the Bay State or the Old Colony. The capital and largest city is Boston. Total Area is 10,555 sq mi and 6th USA State. Became Union State February 6,1788. The state was settled in 1620 by the Pilgrim Fathers. It played an important part in the American Revolution and was one of the original 13 states. Its main industries include the production of electronic and communication equipment, as well as education and research. It also produces a lot of vegetables and fruit, especially cranberries. Among its historical places visited by tourists are Independence Hall, Cape God and Plymouth Rock.

Michigan - a northern US state, also called the Wolverine State and the Great Lakes State, because it is divided into two parts by Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and has borders with Lake Superior and Lake Erie. The largest city is Detroit, and the capital city is Lansing. Michigan was admitted into the Union on January 26, 1837 as the 26th state. Its products include iron and other minerals, cars and cereals. Tourists visit the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, and Mackinac Island. People who live in the state are called Michiganders.

Minnesota - a state in the northern central US on the Canadian border. It has more than 10000 lakes, and is also called the North Star State and the Gopher State. The largest city is Minneapolis and the capital city is St Paul. It became a state in 1858. Minnesota produces 75% of the countrys iron ore (= rock), as well as agricultural products, machinery and computers. The Mayo Clinic, a famous medical centre, is in Rochester. Tourists visit Voyageurs National Park and the Paul Winter Carnival.

Mississippi a southern US state, also called the Magnolia State. Jackson is the largest city and also the capital. Mississippi became a state in 1817 and was one of the Confederate state. It has had conflicts between the races, especially in the 1960s. Its main product is cotton, but other crops include corn, soya beans, peanuts and rice. Tourists can visit the Vicksburg National Military Park and the historical buildings at Natchez.

Missouri - a US state in the Middle West, also called the Show-Me State and, in firmer times, the Mother of the West. Area is 69.704 sq miles. The largest city is Kansas City and the capital city is Jefferson City. Missouri was part of the Louisiana Purchase and became a state in 1821 under the Missouri Compromise. Its products include grain, beer, lead and aerospace equipment. Among places visited by tourists are the Gateway Arch at St Louis and the homes of President Harry S Truman at Independence and Mark Twain at Hannibal.

Montana - a large state in the north-western US, on the Canadian border. The capital city is Helena, and the largest city is Billings. Montana became a state in 1889, and is also called the Treasure State. It produces many minerals, and its mines once supplied half of all US copper. It also produces grain, potatoes, sheep and cattle. Montanas tourist attractions include the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, the Glacier National Park and the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.

Nebraska - a US state in the western part of the Middle West, also called the Cornhusker State. The Missouri River forms its eastern border. The largest city is Omaha, and the capital city is Lincoln. It was part of the Louisiana purchase and was explored by Lewis and Clark. Its agricultural products include corn, wheat, cattle and pigs and it also makes industrial machinery and electronic equipment. Its tourist attractions include Scotts Bluff National Monument and Chimney Rock National Historic Site.

Nevada - a state in the western US, sometimes called the Silver State because of the large amounts of silver that were discovered there in 19th century. It consists mostly of desert and mountains. Its capital is Carson City and the largest city is Las Vegas. Las Vegas and Reno are popular tourist destinations, especially for gambling. Other tourist attractions include Lake Tahoe and the Hoover Dam. In the past, Nevada had less strict marriage laws than other states and people travelled to its cities in order to get divorced quickly. The state produces many minerals, including silver, gold and copper. Its most important agricultural product is cattle.

New Hampshire - a north-eastern US state in New England, also called the Granite State. The largest city is Manchester, and the capital city is Concord. New Hampshire was the first independent English colony (from 1776) and one of the original 13 states. It produces electrical goods, stone, clay and paper products, as well as many crops. Popular tourist attractions include the White Mountain National Forest and Lake Winnipesaukee.

New Jersey - a north-eastern US state on the Atlantic Ocean. Local people often call it Jersey, and it is also known as the Garden State. The largest city is Newark, and the capital city is Trenton. New Jersey was settled by the Dutch, became British in 1664, and was one of the original 13 states. It produces vegetables, chemicals, medicines and clothing. Atlantic City and Princeton University are both in New Jersey.

New Mexico - a south-western US state on the Mexican border, also called the Land of Enchantment. The largest city is Albuquerque, and the capital city is Santa Fe. It became part of the US in 1848 after the Mexican War, and a state in 1912. The first atom bomb was explored at Alamogordo, New Mexico, in 1945. The state produces many minerals, including uranium, gold and silver, as well as oil and gas. Its tourist attractions include Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands National Monument.
